Here's the first installment of the Song, by Toad Festive Fifty for 2011 - a collection of the fifty songs I have been enjoying the most this year. The fifty themselves and the precise order can hardly be described as definitive of course, because you know how fluid things like 'favourite' songs can be, but roughly speaking this is the stuff I have been enjoying the most in 2011. Just as a note, in order to make it a broader representation of the bands I've liked the most, I have made it harder and harder for bands to [...]

Right, all the amateurs have had a go, and we've seen disturbing amounts of Bon Iver and PJ Harvey on lists from Bradford to Boston this year, but it's time for those of us who really know what's good and what isn't to step up and set the record straight. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the definitive list of what's been good this year, so you can all stop pretending to care what Drowned in Sound or Pitchfork think, and find out what you should really be thinking about music. That's all bollocks of [...]

The second volume of the Circle Into Square Compilation has been on constant rotation here at GIMME TINNITUS World Headquarters. It features a representative sampling of the artists on our favorite Portland-based record label, Circle Into Square (which is a partner label with Fake Four, Inc. ). Listen. Tracklisting: Big Pauper / Clinic Hours Loden / Hink Rickolus / Floating Is Better Big Spider's Back / [...]

I have to confess that I kind of thought it might be a while before I wrote a glowing review of this kind of music. The thing with swings in fashion is that it's not just the whims of fans and reviewers which shift, but the musicians themselves. So the next time there isn't enough loud or electronic or guitary or folky or jazzy or whatever music in the press for you, don't just blame the writers, often the musicians themselves are equally complicit - the best ones are often off doing something else. Currently, most [...]
It wasn't hard to pick the lead single for this week's Best New Releases feature. It is a great track, and our song of the day, "Love and Leave," from Chicago indie band Scattered Trees. The dreamy, lush track is a near instant MP3 hit, and contains an ironic anthemic quality, not to mention sounding [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

The biggest fault with 'Birdsong' is that it is over too quickly but then much of Powerdove's output is of short duration. As timeless as a wind chime (and by the sounds of it including them) 'Birdsong' is the work of Annie Lewandowski (and a host of good connections from her travels through the industry down the years) and served to close off her 'Powerdove' EP of last year (free download on bandcamp). Now for someone who doesn't have the patience to sit through a Joanna Newson record this EP proved to be the perfect alternative (harp/fragile vocals). 'Birdsong' didn't [...]

I have an unusually healthy supply of good videos at the moment, so I thought I might pass on three of my favourites, none of which bear much relation to one another, but all of which are cool in different ways. Above is Kid Canaveral's brilliant new animated video for You Only Went Out to Get Drunk Last Night, a song from their cracking album Shouting at Wildlife . Apart from the fact that it's just plain good to watch, it reminds me of one of the best things about being involved in music these days: you [...]

Powerdove is the one-woman project of Southampton, England's Annie Lewandowski, whose debut album, Be Mine, is out February 15 via Circle Into Square Records. The dozen-track LP was recorded in Oakland, Calif.'s Mills College Concert Hall two years ago by Deerhoof's John Dieterich, and while the songs were written to be played solo, Lewandowski was accompanied [...]
Annie Lewandowski (aka powerdove) epitomizes the word "haunting" with such sparse instrumentation on powerdove's debut album, Be Mine . Over a patchwork of twinkling chimes and bells, sustained woodwind notes, swells and scratches of cymbals, and more, Lewandoski gently plucks her acoustic guitar as her voice soars and melts into the heart and mind. It's the simplicity of the music that emphasizes the impact of her enchanting, intimate delivery. The music is inescapable; Lewandoski sounds as though she's playing directly at your ear. It can be beautiful or eerie and everything in between. Today, Mixtape Muse is [...]
