With percussion ricocheting amongst the speakers, Pram's sixth album, The Museum of Imaginary Animals presents itself as a curious entity. Although the songs within were still more cohesive than later efforts, the Birmingham group drifted away from their dream-pop leanings, offering up avant-garde pieces that brought Rosie Cuckson's eerie and distant vocals to the fore. Signifying that was The

The band's early recordings had a krautrock-influenced blend of rhythmic guitar, keyboards and percussion. Pram's first album Gash was self-released and sold by mail order and at gigs. Along with their name and incorporating toy instruments, the band had a child-like theme. Also, Cuckston's eerie vocals and lyrics dealt with depression, loneliness and the dark side of childhood. Pram - Carnival Of Souls The band soon attracted the attention of Too Pure Records (then home to Stereolab , Mouse on Mars and PJ Harvey ). On that label, [...]

A band sent me a submission email last week (as did every band in the world, apparently, as my inbox is currently overloaded). As I listened to the first pair of (quite good) songs from their album, all I could think of was that it reminded me of Pram . Thing is, though, I couldn't remember Pram's name - spent about 5 minutes trying to think of it. After my brain came up empty, I turned to Google. All I could think to type in the search box was 'bands that sound like Stereolab'. The answer I [...]

and without further ado, here's volume 2. this one picks up at 1994 and ends in 2007 with the slo-core bliss-out of epic45. i should point out that these two mixes focus on the "experimental" side of post rock. a primer on the sturm und drang noisy side (mogwai etc.) is coming soon. ::: main - rail ::: pram - life in the clouds ::: hair & skin trading company - * ::: 'o'rang - little brother ::: navigator - driving bell ::: state river widening - unsung couples ::: third eye foundation - [...]

i'm not one of these people that reads great significance into dates like today's, but that doesn't mean i don't get a small thrill from it. plus it makes for a convenient mixtape title. i've been listening to lots of britpop lately for some reason, perhaps i'm homesick/nostaligic. but i've steered clear of that for this - if you like that kind of thing then you've probably got it, right? as usual, this is a pretty random mix of current listens, old & new... ::: years of rice and salt - plankton ::: the cravats - [...]

I've been wanting to do a Friends of the Family blog post for a while now. I usually don't like to put anything up until I have all my facts straight, but unfortunately there's not much I can go on. Info on this band is seriously hard to come by (next to none in fanzines or online). So if you know anything about them, please feel free to comment below. Friends of the Family were from Yorkshire (I believe) and seemed to be together from 1986-88. They released two singles [...]

keith wurlitzer jukebox is one of those chaps that deserves to be showered with floral tributes and such for frittering away hard-earned disposable income from a day job on slithers of black plastic for our enjoyment and his ultimate debt. clearly such a business model is unsustainable in the long term, and hence wj is no more, but we'll always have the music. cheers. 7" released by the mighty wurlitzer jukebox in 1996. sublime.
![Christina Aguilera Pushes The Pram [Listening Station]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1478345_lg.jpg)
Somehow I missed the news that Christina Aguilera was going to sing a track for the comic book tie-in The Spirit , although that could be because the film itself barely blipped onto my radar. Speaking of blips, "Falling In Love Again (Can't Help It)" is an eight-minute plugged-in reworking of the Frederik Hollander/Sammy Lerner song first brought to prominence by Marlene Dietrich , and subsequently covered by lots of other acts ; Aguilera's version has a musical bed that echoes the moody electro of Broadcast and Pram, and a remarkably restrained vocal take. Clip [...]
i'm back from the uk, and i brought with me various "papers" that i've hoarded over the years. and so begins the laborious process of scanning them in. the first fruit is the first fanzine i ever did, back in i think 1992, with my friend conrad. it has some bands that i still really love, like moose, beatnik filmstars, bleach (though it's a rubbish q&a!) and pram. some that have disappeared into obscurity (coma and zu). and even one i didn't particularly like at the time but now rather do (adorable). and it has tons [...]

Get your notepad out, this week has some quick hitters that are destined to spice up your music player. Led by The Academy Is and their newest piece, Fast Times at Barrington High , the pop punk boys from Chicago have been gaining speed from album to album. Perhaps the most flexible of the artists releasing this week, is none other than the Swedish soulful indie groove of Lykke Li . Her song "Little Bit" is so darn catchy. For fans of [...]

occasionally a compilation comes along that is nothing less than genre-defining. foundry's "will our children thank us" is one of those. but what genre exactly? i guess you'd have to call it british post-rock perhaps. or new neu maybe. or something else entirely. or better still nothing at all. 1. throwing a curve ball - appliance 2. glenda - billy mahonie 3. carnival of souls [ghost train dub] - pram 4. fonk - electric sound of joy 5. close frank falling - wisdom of harry 6. peggy's well - novak 7. biggest lie - piano magic 8. eeriel [...]
pram are one of those bands that i don't listen to very often, but when i do get me all misty-eyed and nostalgic for the days when i bought vinyl records, wrote off letters to the contact addresses and got disappointed when they didn't reply. thus i have copies of the iron lung ep and the stars are so big... on my record shelf, and thus i wrote to the band, i think with some bad questions for my fanzine, and thus they didn't reply... except they did - a few weeks later guitarist matt sent me [...]

( 1 votes, average: 1 out of 5) Loading ...

Pram did not enjoy the same level of success as Too Pure labelmates Stereolab or PJ Harvey, but that's OK, their failure puts them in the same class as Th' Faith Healers. Helium, from 1994, was a pretty strange album then, and it remains so now. Not all the songs work for me, but I really like this one. Horns, syncopated percussion, and probably a toy piano or three. Best new jazz on mars. Side A - Pram - Little Angel, Little Monkey [4 stars mp3]
