While it's entirely possible that you've never heard of Netherlands-based avant-luthier Yuri Landman, it's highly unlikely you'll fail to recognize the bands he's built eccentric, amazing new guitars for. Whether it's hosting workshops on how to create instruments around Europe, explaining how to prepare a guitar, or building personalized instruments for high profile musicians, Landman keeps very busy, propagating the weirder side of one of rock music's most prominent and traditional instruments. Landman initially worked as an award-winning comic book artist and then played bass and guitar for indie rockers Zoppo. However, after five years of creating various [...]

Lainna Fader Nick Waterhouse and the Turn-Keys "Some Place" (from "Some Place" 73 out now on Pres ) FUCK YEAH TO THIS, I say with grateful gusto. Back with Ty Segall's Epsilons down in Orange County, there was also Nick Waterhouse's Intelligista, high school kids from HB smashing out Animals-style maximum R&B. Intelligista broke up—college robs us again—but now Nick has a new band. A-side "Some Place" is risen-from-the-crypt Savage Kick early '60s R&B. Wild or Norton or Jail Weddings or Hanni [...]
A prologue is designed to the set the scene and introduce you to an entire piece of work. It can often give you a taste of the things soon to come and prepare you neatly for the future. I can often tell whether I am going to enjoy a book or not after I have read the prologue as it represents the whole book in hand. The same goes for prologue on Comanechi's debut album, 'Crime of love'. [...]
'Feel It' is the third single from Three 6 Mafia's upcoming tenth studio album "Laws of Power" (now slated for a release in February next year). 'Feel It' features Tiësto, Flo'Rida and Sean Kingston and was also produced by Tiësto and is supposed to be released later on this month. Yes people, Three 6 Mafia have also jumped on the electro-hop bandwagon... This remix is out before the actual song and Pres has worked it to make it even more of a banger. I actually like everything about it except for the hard hitting bass in the beginning, [...]
Normally I review 3-4 seven-inch records for this series, but in this case, because this double-7" contains a side each from four Skin Graft bands, I've decided to focus my attention exclusively on SIDES 11-14. This hot little comic/2X7-inch combo is part of a compendium from Skin Graft I'll have to be dropping in on in the not-so-distant future. Until then, I've got SIDES 11-14: Two slabs of vinyl, one purple swirl, one brown swirl, and a comic book about a war no one will ever understand (right?). Did [...]
The Family Curse ... good god. When people tell me a band is "crazy" I usually chuckle to myself heartily and think about Edward Ka-Spel . That makes me feel better, usually ... But in this case "crazy" is actually a fairly apt descriptor (hear it for yourself; listen to all 6 minutes of "Bodies in Rooms" for free over there ---->). The Family Curse are dollars-to-donuts one of the kookiest combos around, dealing in an unseemly din of death loops, car-crashing crescendos and hyper-banshee shrieks. [...]
Speed Freaks and Skin Grafts They've released split 73s with AIDS Wolf , Comanechi and Crystal Castles, so how could we not love them? PRE has also released two full-length albums, the second of which came out in June this year. They're a noise making, obnoxiously crazy, hardcore punk machine from the UK who has a reputation for erratic new-wave post punk and playing chaotic live shows across the world (for their very first show in London they locked fans outside and made them watch [...]
A few of my recent favorites from the Free Music Archive (had a long list for this that I'll have to get to at a later date) The FMA loves Lucky Dragons (Lukey Dargons and Sara Rara) for two simple reasons: 1. Their music and visual art taps into Earth's eternal hot spring of positive energy, and remixes its best elements, and 2. They return the favor by feeding it all back out into the world under Creative Commons . Lucky Dragons have a [...]
Loud. Brash. Obnoxious. Wild. Crazed. These are all terms one could use to describe the village nut; they can also be used to describe the band PRE , whose wild noisy punk is absolutely not for everyone. But for the individual that can tolerate the noise sub-genre - featuring shouted vocals, massive volume in percussion and guitar, and erratic behavior in all three - these songs are absolutely brilliant . Hope Freaks is the follow up to 2007's Epic Fits , and in [...]
Someone, somewhere, deep in PRE HQ , a man with a beard proudly proclaimed, "More cowbell!" Or at least that's how I see it; how else can you explain the suddenly less-bumpy sound of one of rock's prickliest pears? I'm not saying I don't like it, either. It's punk-y, energetic and perhaps easier to enjoy than the PRE-rinsed grooves of old. This is like the transition from the first Daughters record to the second: You can tell some feelings will be hurt, but in the [...]
PRE HOPE FREAKS (Skin Graft Records) www.myspace.com/prepreprepre Frist, punk rock started in the 70s. In about a decade, it morphed to sub-genres like post-punk, pop punk, and countless others. PRE's Hope Freaks stretches that punk evolution into noisier territory. The album pays tribute to (or possibly pokes fun at) their post-punk roots with the title of their first song, "Gang of Wire," which features a long vocal drone held for a lengthy time led by a male vocalist. Most of the rest of the [...]
It should come as no surprise that the new PRE album Hope Freaks just out recently on Skin Graft is something of interest around these parts. I enjoyed their debut Epic Fits when it was released and as it appears Hope Freaks is keeping right in line with their frenetic vision of no-wave noise making. At least for me, when I think of an album as grower it usually applies to an album that is much longer and is an [...]
Album Review: PRE – Third LP
In a musical world featuring a handful of genres including the "post" prefix (post-rock, post-punk, post-polka probably), audiences deserve a dose of pre. And who better to deliver some proto insanity than British brain bashers PRE ? For their aptly titled Third LP (which was recorded by a more famous noisenik, Steve Albini), they've put together what is being marketed as "the first ever 73 vinyl "LP" in history," five no wave noise raves sweep over you in under 10 minutes. Before Male Bonding hit the big time, John Arthur Webb [...]

Interview: Male Bonding
For the last couple of years, London's been increasingly abuzz with distortion and line-noise. One of the bands at the forefront of the abundant Dalston scene is Male Bonding . Through their commitment to their own record label, Paradise Vendors, and since signing to Sub Pop for their debut album, the band has been drawing loads of attention to both their own music and of their noisy lo-fi UK peers like Graffiti Island and Fair Ohs . The band's origins are in British noise rockers Pre , and in 2007 guitarist John Webb, [...]
