Alhough the album won’t be out until July 9, the venerable New Orleans institution has offered up a glimpse of the release for fans to preview. They are the first new songs to be recorded by the “Hall” in decades. That’s It! was produced by My Morning Jacket's Jim James and PHJB’s Ben Jaffe and recorded at The Preservation Hall in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans. Band members Ben Jaffe, Charlie Gabriel, [...]
Welcome to Day Three! Friday was a blast but don’t expect it to stop quite yet! We still have all of today and tomorrow to see before we all start the long trek home and both days hold some really exciting acts. The shows start today at 12:15 to give all of us tired, huddled, yearning masses a chance to sleep in a little bit before it’s back into full swing. The first show I plan on seeing is the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. When my family visited New Orleans a few years ago, they caught this act [...]

Tickets to see John Prine at Beacon Theatre go on sale today at 10 AM. Tickets to see Legendary Pink Dots at Knitting Factory go on sale today at 10 AM. Tickets for the Vince Clarke DJ set at Le Poisson Rouge go on sale today at 10 AM. Preservation Hall Jazz Band are playing [...]

**Block Party Waking up early has its advantages at a music festival (“early” being a relative term and meaning roughly 8:30 in this case). First: hot water and no line for the showers. Although not an option at all campsites, hot water especially is still a “hot” commodity when this many people are involved. Secondly: a few moments of quiet, the calm before the storm if you will. There will, undoubtedly, be a group of guys playing Lawn-Pong (much like Beer-Pong but substituting a large, grassy area for a ping-pong table, buckets for Dixie cups, and full beers [...]

Sigur Rós headlines Saturday / photo by Morgen Schuler by Tara Kelly Kearns The sun was shining when groggy concert goers raised from the dead this morning. Avoiding hangovers, bloody marys and mimosas abounded while folks attempted to erase the fatigue in their faces from the day before. The Mainstage hosted the first act of the day I had been recommended to see. New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band was already in full swing (pun intended) by the time I walked down to the main floor. [...]
Apart from the fact that you're in one of the greatest North American music festival settings with a superb lineup, you get a one-up from those attending Lollapalooza, Coachella, Pitchfork or Bonnaroo... You won't share what you're watching live with the rest of the world through the Internet. Ironic that I'm writing this here, isn't it? YouTube and Sasquatch! currently don't have a partnership set up. Obviously this is due to the remoteness of Quincy's Gorge location, but it's also a huge draw. What you experience and share with you're fellow Sasq-watchers will be considerably more unique, and [...]

This fact may be hard to believe, but throughout their long and storied career the Preservation Hall Jazz Band have never released a studio album consisting entirely of their own original compositions. The legendary New Orleans act will change all that come July 9, with the release of That's It! via Sony Legacy. The 11-track record, which was recorded at the band's home-base at 726 St. Peter Street in the French Quarter, was co-produced by Pres Hall's own Ben Jaffe and My Morning Jacket front man Jim James , [...]

One of the more intriguing bits on last month's Bonnaroo 2013 lineup announcement dealt with this year's SuperJams. First off, there will be at least two SuperJams on "the farm" in June. Actor/musician Ed Helms of The Office will host a tent called "Bluegrass Situation." As part of his duties, Helms will also curate a bluegrass SuperJam with "special guests." Also, Jim James will front what was originally billed as a "Soul SuperJam" that will feature the My Morning Jacket singer/guitarist performing with John Oates of Hall & Oates, drummer Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters and Preservation Hall [...]

Tonight was a big night for The Black Keys at The Grammys as not only has El Camino won Best Rock Album and Lonely Boy won Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song trophies, but The Keys' Dan Auerbach took home the coveted Producer of the Year award. The Black Keys also teamed up with Dr. John and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to perform Lonely Boy on the live broadcast. If you missed it, we've got you covered... Our friends at [...]

Editor's Note: This is a repost from last year, or the year before - whatever. Mardi Gras is the final big blowout before the period of fasting and sacrifice called Lent. Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, is the end of carnival season and the final day you can indulge in those earthly pleasures we all love so much. Ash Wednesday is next Wednesday. Feel free to party as you please; here’s some music to help you on your way. Play ‘em loud, play ‘em often and play ‘em all year [...]

Today's Song of the Day comes from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a name given to the Dixieland Jazz and traditional Jazz bands that play at Preservation Hall in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The group was formed in the early 1960s and has had many different members since then. "Short Dressed Gal," was first recorded in 1927 by Sam Morgan's Jazz Band. This swinging version was recorded in 2009 for the album New Orleans Preservation, Volume 1 . Check it out after the jump. Short Dressed [...]

One of my favorite things in the whole wide world is Dixieland jazz – and its kissing cousin, New Orleans jazz. Another thing that brings a smile to my face is the amazing rejuvenation of N’awlins after the last eight years-or-so of, er, challenges. Not that Preservation Hall Jazz Band says anything particular about that in its new four-disc retrospective. But all the crazy joy and painful poignancy of the city and its music are represented therein. Standout tracks from the ensemble’s rich history have been gathered for the [...]

Another venerable music act is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and although they may not get the attention of the Rolling Stones or the Beach Boys, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a great and vital piece of American music history. The band, based out of historic Preservation Hall in New Orleans, is releasing a new album, St. Peter and 57th . The album consists of live recordings from a show in Carnegie Hall and features special guests including tUnE-yArDs, Trombone Shorty, Yasiin Bey, Jim James, Allen Toussaint, Steve Earle and many more. This is [...]
