ALBUM REVIEW: There are a lot of fuzz-o-gistics going on with Black Wine's Summer of Indifference from their familiar So Cals sounds at times that are mixed with some Mission of Burma and then there are these epic zen-arcadian moments that just rip up the planks. There are also dark pop gems like "Maycrowing" with Miranda their drummer singing who's narrative like storytelling style evens out the Milo-esque keel in this vessel. In earnest all the vocal melodies drive this underground popish outfit. It's a very fine roast [...]

What do you do after you've nailed multiple genres and been in highly-respected bands like Murder City Devils and Pretty Girls Make Graves? You change it up again, of course. Derek Fudesco, of the previously mentioned bands, is now a member of The Cave Singers. Their third album No Witch dropped this week. It's a folksy romp of an album full of understated guitars and melodies that could bring the Hatfields and McCoys together for an afternoon luncheon. It made me want to drink a bottle of moonshine and [...]

This is a serious subject, and one I don't plan to take very lightly. As I've attended several shows recently, even small local ones, I began to look at the racial dynamic in the Austin music scene. Oddly, one giant sore thumb sticks out: the lack of African-American attendees at these shows. This is probably the same way in every city across the land, and I tend to think it's quite unfortunate. I'm not here to debate how to solve the problem, if you deem this a problem, but rather to honor my Top Five African-American participants in the [...]

Rating: 0.5 out of 5 stars When the Jaguar Love project first came to fruition, it was initially 2 parts Blood Brothers and 1 part Pretty Girls Make Graves . They released an incredible single with "Highways of Gold." That was then. Now the band is 2 parts Blood Brothers and no parts PGMG ; will this affect the sound of Hologram Jams ? The answer is yes, and you'll be surprised how much. [...]
by chuck bell One would be hard-pressed to find a band name more allusive than Pretty Girls Make Graves . The most obvious reference would be The Smiths' song from their self-titled album. However, that song refers to a line from Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Burns , which itself refers to a correspondence between Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan. As it turns out, the band's formation was just as circuitous as their name. The core of the band was frontwoman [...]

We're happy to tell you about some new friends we've made from Denver, Colorado: Snake Rattle Rattle Snake. They've just release their self-titled EP, and they've already us wanting more. We're offering up one of these tracks to you, which showcases the brooding vocals Hayley Helmericks. For some reason, this recalls a really dark version of Pretty Girls Make Graves if they were more post-industrial than post-punk, if that makes sense to anyone but me. The group is making their way to Austin for SXSW, and we'll [...]

Welcome to part one of GIMME TINNITUS' Best Songs Of The Aughts where we look back on the best songs of 2000-2004. Back when all the "best of the decade" whoopla started earlier this year (with Pitchfork's Best Of ), I began thinking about the songs I would have blogged about had I actually been blogging (or let's say posting about music on an angelfire page) way back in 2000. I sifted through many tracks to come up with this list, and I hope it helps you reconnect with some tracks you may have forgotten [...]

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars Most people who have followed this band will surely know that the components that make up The Cave Singers have established themselves in a world outside the folk realm in which they currently live. Guitarist Derek Fudesco, for example, probably is most well known for his role in Pretty Girls Make Graves , but let's not get carried away here, as the band are now establishing themselves as a new voice coming out of the rainy Northwest. [...]

Seattle's Cave Singers ' second album, Welcome Joy, sticks out amongst the massive amount of indie-folk music that's currently being dropped throughout the new music land. The album isn't too dramatic, and refreshingly, the band is composed of talented musicians. Cave Singers label, Matador Records stated that the Singers' trio, Peter Quirk (vocals, guitar, melodica, harmonica; formerly of Hint Hint ), Derek Fudesco (guitar, bass pedals; formerly of Pretty Girls Make Graves ), and Marty Lund [...]
by chuck bell There are some music scenes that are so tightly knit and incestuous, that it is difficult to tell where one band starts and another begins. For example, in the early 80's, D.C.'s hardcore scene was based around Ian Mackaye and various Dischord affiliates, from Minor Threat all the way to Fugazi . In the early 90's, nearly every Chicago indie band was somehow involved with Cap'n Jazz and the Kinsella brothers. Today, it is difficult to find a Canadian band that is not associated [...]

Don't you just love it when you put on a record that you haven't listened to for an age and it just blows you away? It's almost like hearing it for the first time. The same thrills. The same excitement. Reawakening the interest that first hooked you in. Well that's exactly what happened yesterday when I stuck on 'The New Romance' by Pretty Girls Make Graves . So I thought I'd post these tracks so that you can get a flavour of what hit me yesterday. A heady mix of tight paranoia, coiled [...]
![Throwback Thursday [The Letter "P" Edition]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1727451_lg.jpg)
Today's Throwback Thursday is a tight mix of everything from the first album I ever owned until my first year of college back in 2004 - All within the letter P. Thanks iTunes for being so organized. Paul Simon - The Obvious Child This song brings me back to a time when things like bills and laundry didn't matter. Whenever the family would go on a road trip, we would pack the car and turn up the volume so everyone could hear the brilliant pounding percussion of Grupo Cultural [...]
