From AT's inbox; the names have been changed to protect the guilty: In regards to your blog, we would like to ask you to write a piece on PSEUDO-CLEVER BAND NAME's new album " UNINSPIRED TITLE ". With a diverse range of influences, from LEGENDARY JAZZ PERFOMER and LEGENDARY REGGAE ARTIST to WELL-LOVED INDIE ROCK BAND #1 and WELL-LOVED INDIE ROCK BAND #2 , the band still manages to bring it all together and create something that sounds fresh, with hooks akimbo, and a lust and fear [...]

for those of you who don't know, we rented a place instead of crashing in a hotel. it makes for many drunken lectures by joe about his vast life lessons, like, "never settle." talk about profound. Pretty Girls Make Graves "The Nocturnal House"

So I did get the iPod/Zune/MP3 auxiliary input installed in the car last night and it sounds pretty good. Here is an abbreviated shuffle mix of what was playing last night as I removed the center console and disconnected the negative battery terminal. Maybe we'll replay it at the garage sale this morning. And then there was the scuffle between Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett and pitcher Carlos Zambrano. Well, since the Cubs (in my book) have officially begun their implosion, at least they are proving to be somewhat entertaining. I just wonder [...]

Wow, somehow my three day holiday weekend turned into a five day vacation from this blog, which has resulted in this tardy and abbreviated This Week In Shows post. Wednesday, May 30th: Electric Soft Parade @ Spaceland I really don't know much about Electric Soft Parade, but the track below is pretty good. Look out for Scott (IAF reviewer) there tonight, someone offer him a new job. Electric Soft Parade - If That's The Case ( mp3 ) [...]

I hadn't originally realized that Seattle, Washington's Pretty Girls Make Graves was such a polarizing act. But it was one of those facets of the band that became instantly obvious once they announced that they were breaking up. I never expected such empassioned cheers of "Good! I hate them!" from people who I thought could care less. Similarly, the fans that came out to last Tuesday night's at the EARL were intensely exuberant in their dedication - asking themselves, the band and everyone around them, "Why are they breaking up? Why?" [...]

Audiversity’s weekly column on random music in a predetermined number of words between 1 & 150. This week's randomly generated number: 48. MA: Produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry , "Ashes and Dust" is an eerie remix of Augustus Pablo ’s seminal “Vibrate On” from 1977. Perry sounds lost among Pablo’s sensuous melodica and the phase-shifting proto-disco riddim. Is he praising Jah or asking for guidance out of his unstable mental state? Simply haunting. [...]

Losing out on Billy Donavan has got me a little bummed today. I mean, I know the University of Kentucky basketball coach job doesn't have quite the stigma of greatness it used to, but it's still top four and will always be one of the highest paid. Anyway, looks like now-former Texas A&M coach, Billy Gillespie, will be announced as UK's next head coach today around 12:45pm EST. I like this hire. Gillespie is a proven recruiter, and UK needs help in that department these days. It's interesting that [...]

Pretty Girls Make Graves by Dan Monik According the the gospel called Pitchfork, Pretty Girls Make Graves are breaking up after their next tour. Though the band's website reports that "Nick quit the band and the rest of us feel like it wouldn’t be right to continue on without him," one has to wonder if the recent public outings of bassist Derek Fudesco's side project (possibly now main project) The Cave Singers came into the equation. (Coincidence?) The last time Fudesco had a side project band, it was called Pretty Girls [...]

Via Bitchfork: After just a little over five years together, punk band Pretty Girls Make Graves have announced that they are breaking up after one last tour. Citing the departure of drummer Nick Dewitt as the impetus behind the split, the Seattle group posted the following message on their website late Sunday night: "We are sorry to announce that our upcoming tour in May will be our last. Nick quit the band and the rest of us feel like it wouldn't be right to continue on without him. The 5 of us feel very [...]

Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001 from the members of a number of other bands; The Hookers, Area 51 and Murder City Devils. Their first record, Good Health , came out on Lookout in 2002, and soon after the band signed to Matador and released the highly acclaimed followup, The New Romance . After a bit of a hiatus, their third record, this year's Elan Vital has finally been released, and is highly recommended (though not by Pitchfork) despite not being quite as great as its predecessor. This was their only [...]
