Back after a short hiatus for just another Wild Weekend . The weather's fine, my team just won the Spanish league for the third time in a row and is on its way to Wembley for a big showdown, and the hits just keep on coming. On to edition #59 forthwith then so, with laidback alt HipHop from Basehead, crazy rockabilly by Tyrone Schmidling, and hot toasting courtesy of Prince Jazzbo. Irie times. But let's begin with some deep soul, confusingly known also as northern soul (because they loved it up [...]
Dub Club is an L.A. institution and now (after almost five years of filming) the documentary Return Of The Rub-A-Dub Style —which follows both the organizers of Dub Club and the long line of original reggae and dub stars they've brought to perform exclusive shows in L.A.—is about to release. This interview by Nolan Knight.
You don't need to be George W. Bush to wage preemptive war. When the reggae toaster I Roy saw his microphone dominance challenged in the mid seventies, he struck his competition first, delivering the scorching track "Straight to Jazzbo's Head." Naturally, the song prompted retaliation from the up-and-coming Prince Jazzbo, and it touched off one of reggae's great lyrical feuds.

I've always thought this Prince Jazzbo song "Gal Boy I-Roy" was hilarious (my favorite line being "So you tell the crowd that Prince Jazzbo is very ugly, but if I didn't ugly you wouldn't have the opportunity to use call my name in your tune to get promotion"), and always kind of wondered what the deal was and what I-Roy had done to piss him off. So I just looked it up and found this whole discussion thread on the topic. Listen to the song and see if you care to investigate further. [...]

I've always loved walking. The best part, one really gets a feel for their surroundings, rather than the carousel effect of watching the world through the window of a fast moving car, bus or train. I enjoy walking so much that I often try (unsuccessfully) to convert my fellow Southern Californians to leave the car behind and hoof it - this is a place where peeps will jump into their auto to drive two blocks to a fast food joint. Now, there's places humans shouldn't walk and I found that out during a Summer in the Nevada desert. I walked [...]

Building on his success with the MIA mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism Diplo recently released another mixtape. This time its in conjunction with Brooklyn Queen Santogold. Diplo takes tracks off Santo's recent record and then mixes in a host of blends from dirty south, club, classic cuts, dance tracks, dancehall, dubstep, and reggae and more. I don't like it as much has his previous mixtape but Diplo is still in top form on this one. Tracks feature XXXchange, Ratatat, Richie Spice, Three 6 Mafia, B-52's, Kid Cudi, Switch, Radioclit, Benga, Tony Matterhorn, Skream, Warrior Queen and Barrington [...]
