On the Friday night of Electric Picnic, an uninterrupted flow of ascetic bass beats drew revellers roaming the Body and Soul area to the main amphitheatre. When they reached its source, they were greeted by a diminutive and enigmatic singer, barely approaching five feet and clad in a lycra jumpsuit. With the seasoned DJ Prince Kong arming the decks, Cork-based MC Lady Grew proceeded to deliver a rave-inciting performance that combined elements of cabaret, drum n' bass and hip-hop in equal measure. As the jaw-gnawing frenzy of the preceding evening gradually wore away, we [...]

Tonight sees the launch of Prince Kong's debut long player Proper Horror Show , Dublin's premier grimey dancehall artist. Over the last two years, Kong's sound has mutated from spastic breakcore to rival the likes of The Bug for quality underground junglist rhythms. He has been working with some of the best MCs around: Warrior Queen , Jah Balance, Lady Grew , Eccleton Jarrett and MC Quilombola . Proper Horror Show drops tonight in the Melody Bar, Capel Street, Dublin which also serves as the launch of label [...]

Featuring four "bass-heavy dance-floor wreckers", if you're into electronic music, dub or bass, you'll want to hear this. The opening track from 16 Hertz is built on a snatch of a brass sample, a half-stepping beat and some nice oozing sub-bass. You can hear 90 [...]

One of the gigs I missed which I regretted muchly of late was Prince Kong at the !Kaboogie Squidge EP launch a couple of weeks back (Also missed The Alphabet Set one for my sins). The whole stonking, rumbling set is up at !Kaboogie now and features over an hour of the best future dub, bass and ragga coming out of Ireland (and most other places) at the moment. The durrty-skankin' set has MC Rodrigo of Super Extra Bonus Party and MC Lady Grew from London, who I know little [...]

Dublin dubstep, ragga, jungle and electronica types !Kaboogie have made their most recent label sampler available for download from their website . There are eleven tracks in total from names like Cignol, 2-Bit, Bluefood, The Banker, A-Force, Prince Kong, Kachanski and Solen. Below are my favourites from the compilation. Get the whole thing though. Cignol - Leiden Ex Bluefood - Dek Rudder Bluebottle Farm - Tom's Swings 2-Bit - Stringaling [...]

Belgium's Aeroplane have been killing their remixes of late. Like a funky taxidermist stuffing the originals with sick grooves. Or something.... Their Friendly Fires and MGMT remixes are repeaters and now you can add their Italo Sebastien Tellier remix to the list. Essential. As is another cut from Solid Gold, the lounge-folk of Ariel Pink, a Cool Kids-esque track from Zion I, an angry skeng from Dublin's Prince Kong, a Macedonia via Sao Paolo remix, a lovely album track from The Knife frontwoman's solo project Fever Ray, another ace Four Tet remix, a woman who can't [...]
While we were producing issue 10 of State, we asked the bands featured to give us an MP3 to us so we could put our money where our mouths are. The issue is embedded below (click to enlarge) so you can read and listen at the same time. Hah - the magic of multimedia! [...]
