It'd been nigh on twelve long months since I'd last found myself clambering up the vertiginous inclines of Alexandra Park toward Ally Pally – a timescale no sooner contemplated than it'd been calculated, for each extreme was bookended by something utterly scintillating. Each was an I'll Be Your Mirror . This time taking place toward the beginning of an altogether merrier May, Karen O and her resurgent Yeah Yeah Yeahs plastered Saturday in a fluoro hue of glee, cherry-picking the likes of Dirty Beaches & The Field & Anika from a group filed [...]

The first of a new bi-weekly series, the Best Fit Mix will feature a specially curated selection of tracks from a wide variety of artists and producers with an aim to tap into their influences and unearth some hidden gems. Kicking things off is Prince Rama . Hot off the debut of their film 'Never Forever', the Brooklyn group Prince Rama has assembled a compilation of sounds that, much like the band, defy all classification and occupy a universe that is wholly their own. This [...]
Returning for a third outing, if this year streamlined to but the one solitary day next month is to witness the return of All Tomorrow's Parties' tangential I'll Be Your Mirror festival to Alexandra Palace for an afternoon-cum-early evening-cum-black night shebang which looks set to be explosive, and so too expansive as any other. For where previous editions have focussed on altogether gloomier aesthetics ( Portishead called upon anyone and everyone from DOOM and Company Flow to Swans and GY!BE, whilst last year featured the likes of the Melvins, Slayer, Codeine and so on) this [...]

A couple of years back, the Guardian published an article called "The Lost Art of the Pop Manifesto," bemoaning, well, the lost art of the pop manifesto. The article harked back to the golden age of punk, when bands published manifestos as often as they made records, and lamented that bands these days just don't seem to do the same thing. We're not so sure, though — so in honor of The Knife's recently published manifesto, which did the rounds earlier this week, here's a look at some of our favorite manifestos past and present, from [...]
For a country with relatively minimal amounts of jagged coastline, Canada's certainly producing some invigoratingly edgy music at the minute. In fact, I'd go so far as to throw hyperbole to the wind and suggest them there Canucks are, contemporarily speaking, just about the most refreshing artists actively out there. And Prince Innocence – the Toronto/ Montréal pairing comprising Talvi Faustmann and Josh McIntyre – go some way to becoming the reigning monarch of our hearts. 'Rama still prevails, though Golden Hour runs 'em close. The inevitable parallel, however, will perhaps always be compatriots Purity Ring though as Faustmann initially coos of [...]
It's been quite some while already that art-pop daydreamer Airick Woodhead has been hanging around in the Doldrums of blog culture, which automatically creates a dangerous amount of anticipation around this, his début full-length. For his is a name of quiet notoriety already: he's been around the world a couple times touring his scattily collated bits and pieces; done the prerequisite Grimes collaboration. And Lesser Evil even appears to neatly encapsulate both a learned outlook on modern-day electronica, and indeed the sonic identity of his native Montréal. Though why, therefore, does it never quite work as one? [...]

Reference Points is the weekly column where we get the chance to ask our favourite artists to reveal what inspires them from outside the world of music. This week, we catch up with Prince Rama , a band who were perhaps better prepared than most for the rumoured end of the world, which was supposed to happen in December. Then didn’t. Nevertheless, the Brooklyn duo made sure that a super soundtrack was in place to accompany the planet’s end in the form of their latest album, Top Ten Hits of the End of the World and [...]

Got any plans for the possible apocalypse? Yet once again, there's another media frenzy of internet rumors about the end of the world, currently set to occur this Friday. It's hard to summarize what is said to happen, as there's such an amalgamation of theories referencing demons, aliens, a collision with another planetary body, black holes- you name it, it's in the mix. There are likely a number preppers planning to scramble for potential safety in mountain ranges, and packing their pantries to the brim. But if there's anyone who's going to sell me on any "end of [...]

by Bill Pearis Prince Rama @ Cake Shop, CMJ 2012 ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) As you may be aware, Friday is December 21 aka 12/21/12 , aka the day that the world is supposed to end according to the Mayan calendar. (Many people don't believe the world will actually end, or they probably wouldn't finished up Breaking Bad already.) There are a lot of Apocalypse parties happening, one of which will be at 285 Kent headlined by [...]
