The random mid-90s alt-rock compilation; is there any better source for oddball rarities and bizarro obscurities? It's thanks to this trend of "let's package as many bands who we think the kids who like Nirvana might like together and see what happens" we have albums like No Alternative , with Soul Aslyum's awesome take on "Sexual Healing" and that crazy Carpenters tribute record with Sonic Youth's cover of "Superstar." Chairman of the Board , a collection of alt-rock groups taking on standards made famous by Frank Sinatra, doesn't have any classic cuts like those records [...]
"Yeah, of course you do. Give it to me!" -- Tom, responding to a dude from the label who revealed that he had the 2011 RSD Superchunk/Coliseum split 7" for him "I am going to call shenanigans on that." -- Tom, disputing the claim that attractive girls were present at the Amadeus Nerd Party "Party for one. Right here. Happenin' ... now. And it's pretty good ." -- Coco Hames, flying solo in her London flat "I think he's a savant. Gifted in ways that [...]

Editor’s note: “ Overlooked in Ohio ” is a feature in which we ask an Ohio-based artist/music enthusiast to tell us about a band or bands from the state of Ohio (past or present) that deserve some love. Our fifth installment comes courtesy of Eric Davidson - New Bomb Turks singer, rock scribe and now real-deal author. His new book We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988-2001 is out now. He'll read from it in Columbus at the Wexner Center on July 9, the night before the Turks take the stage with Scrawl [...]

Prisonshake , "Crush Me" I'd never heard of Prisonshake until a day or two ago when my friend Sal mentioned them in an email. Now, however, I find myself listening to their latest album, Dirty Moons , essentially on repeat. Who is Prisonshake, you ask? Prisonshake began in 1986 out of the ashes of the early 80s hardcore punk scene in Cleveland. Guitarist Robert Griffin and drummer Scott Pickering had played together in Spike in Vain and shortly afterwards got together to record what would be [...]

More than any other year of I Rock Cleveland's Year End Extravaganza Bonanza, the 25 albums compiled in this list represent both the albums which I've personally enjoyed the most, and the albums which I hold in the highest critical regard. There are no consensus picks (Sorry, Fleet Foxes), no popular picks (Sorry, TV on the Radio, I really, really tried this time), and no My Morning Jacket (Sorry dudes, your album was pretty much awful). Instead, you'll find 25 albums of rock, pop, and folk which soundtracked my year, and hopefully, soundtracked much of your year [...]

Prisonshake is making its first St. Louis appearance in over three years tonight at the Bluebird ( Preview here , feature on the band here , gank MP3s here .) The blog I Rock Cleveland was at the band's show last weekend in (where else?) Cleveland and has a review and pictures. Go check it out . -- Annie Zaleski

As Prisonshake kept the modest, yet devoted crowd, waiting in anticipation for their first hometown show in ages, it became important to maintain a little perspective. Yes, the clock had moved past midnight, and Saturday night had become Sunday Morning. Yes, it seemed rather unnecessary to build any more anticipation for the 50 or so audience members in attendance, as anyone at The Grog Shop was there to see Prisonshake, and not there to be seen seeing a band. Yet, when you've waited 15 years for a follow up album to 1993's Roaring Third , what's another [...]

Just last night while unpacking some boxes after a recent move, I came across an old issue of Robert Griffin's late lamented Seven magazine, a 'zine dedicated to the 7" single. The issue, dating from spring 1991, includes scads of single reviews, some fiction, art and a double 7" single from Puff Tube. In it, I read comments from Griffin about the 7" single that sound much like what he shares below. They're too pricey, for example. But he's off base in one regard: "Sadly, it's already a given that it's larger [...]
"Come back, fun! How did you leave me within 30 seconds?!" - Tom, delivering the punchline to his classic sitcom joke "Mike said he was donating to the Pharoah Sanders Fund." -- Tom, questioning his Associate Producer's suspicious "charitable contributions" to the jazz saxophonist via Tunes in Hoboken "I don't think there's anything wrong with the idea that this person would fall out of the sky and be the running mate of the oldest President in history." - Tom, lending his support to upstart politician Sarah Palin "I'm [...]

Prisonshake Dirty Moons Scat Records A lot has changed in the 15 years since the Cleveland-born band, Prisonshake, released their last album, 1993's The Roaring Third. Just spend one hour watching vH1's I Love the Nineties, I Love the Nineties 2, or I Love the Nineties So Much We Can Make a Third Series About It, and you'll quickly realize those were much different times. Bill Clinton was just taking office as president, the World Wide Web was still only used by scientists and geeks, and American rock music was [...]
* The curious case of the bandwidth bandits continues: I wish I could give you more of an update, but I'm still going back and forth with my hosting company. I've been assured that the admins are currently looking into this matter and I should hear something shortly. Yesterday, I did some digging around on my own and was able to trace the 1.45 TB of bandwidth usage back to 8 sessions using IE5 and Windows 98 during Saturday and Sunday. I contend this type of usage is humanly impossible. They disagree. Well, [...]
It's occurred to me that some of you may not understand why I'm so stoked to get my hands on Prisonshake's new album and similarly stoked to see them live at the Grog on September 20th. So, let's take a trip to the vaults: Prisonshake come from a different era, a time when selling out was akin to being a Holocaust denier. Now, it's no big thing to shill for a car company. Hey, a band's gotta get paid some way. However, for the Shake, their strict ethics [...]

Fifteen years in the making, Prisonshake releases Dirty Moons today! You can find the CD at your local record store and of course online at Scat Records ' website HERE . The band will be celebrating its release (kinda) with a show at the Bluebird on Friday, September 26. Here's an MP3 from the album: MP3: Prisonshake, "Crush Me" [...]

In this week's paper, I interviewed Robert Griffin of Prisonshake , which is releasing its first album in fifteen years, Dirty Moons , this Tuesday, August 26. (Read my entire story HERE .) The album is coming out on Scat Records , a label Griffin has run for nearly twenty years. Started when Prisonshake was still in Cleveland, Scat is probably best-known for releasing seminal albums from Dayton, Ohio's Guided By Voices , including Bee Thousand ("Hardcore UFOs," "I Am A Scientist"), [...]
(Me, with my vintage WMMS T-shirt. 100.7 FM is Cleveland's legendary classic rock/new music station.) I'm a firm believer that you can never truly know a person until you know from whence they come. And as everyone knows, I'm a Cleveland gal, loud and proud, born and raised. I have so much Ohio pride, in fact, that I still have my driver's license from there, and it's paining me to buck up and get a Missouri license in the coming weeks. (Hi, St. Louis cops! Don't pull me over!) Like the [...]
* The Dreadful Yawns and Expecting Rain will be playing tonight's edition of Cleveland Sessions, the free concert series at The Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. The show starts at 7. In other Yawns news, the band will be celebrating the release of their latest album, Take Shape, this Saturday night at The Beachland Tavern. *Following the lead of Jay Reatard , who's released four 7" singles this year on Matador, with a fifth one on the way, Columbus' Times New Viking will release their very own 7".
