Words: Will Slater Recently, my dear old dad got out his box of old vinyl 45s to convert into audio files. These are mainly factory samples from when he worked as a sleeve designer for Decca back in the day. Being a man of retro as well as modern tastes, I selected a few of my favourites from this archive so that you lovely people could enjoy the genuine sound of a vinyl single in digital format. Enjoy! Couldn't Get It Right by [...]
Switching back to the classic rock versions for today, December 17th's edition of the Raised on Indie Christmas Song Extravaganza (sure I just made that name up now). You can't get much more classic in the rock world, today's artists touch more on the progressive and psychedelic scene, respectively. The first track comes from the English symphonic progressive rock band Procol Harum. The band is best known for their track A Whiter Shade of Pale. The featured track for today from the band is titled A Christmas Camel, and it is on the band's self titled vinyl record [...]

Cat Power likes covers. And, it turns out, so does everyone else. If the success of her cover-filled Jukebox is any indicator, fans will receive her new EP The Dark End of The Street just as warmly. The record opens with the title track, an Aretha Franklin cover. While I don't care for the way she pronounces certain words, or the slightly nasal quality in her voice, she still has an incredibly warm and inviting tone. Certain elements of the song remind me of [...]
. Last weekend I was strolling around Cape Town's Waterfront – a brilliant place despite being aggressively touristy around which all kinds of normal harbour functions are taking place – when I passed a structure I have walked by many, many times over the years: a garage type of thing in which is parked a quick response boat run by the National Sea Rescue Institute (although I have lived by the

We skipped the light fandango turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick but the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink the waiter brought a tray And so it was that later as the miller told his tale that her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale She said, 'There is no reason and the truth is plain to see.' But [...]
Lagið heitir "As Strong As Samson" (ekki Björgúlfsfeðga Samson þó) og er af plötunni Exotic Birds And Fruits sem út kom út um mitt ár 1974. Það er auðvitað mín allra uppáhalds sveit, sjálf Procol Harum , sem flytur. Lag og texti versogóur: [MP3] Procol Harum - As Strong As Samson [...]

Ég hef alltaf gaman af þessari umræðu því það er ómögulega hægt að koma sér saman um hvaða lög eiga heima á þessum lista. Hér fyrir neðan eru þau fimm sem ég tilnefni. Persónulega finnst mér að óþarfi sé að rökræða valið á fyrstu þremur lögunum þó vel megi þræta um þau tvö síðustu. Allt eru þetta þó lög sem eiga það sameiginlegt að hafa staðist hafa tímans tönn og vekja enn í dag álíka hughrif og umtal og þau gerðu þegar þau komu út. Þetta eru lög sem þóttu sum afar umdeild og voru jafnvel bönnuð í sumum löndum. [...]

Trower expanded his mind in Procol Harum and then moved onto a prolific solo career, complete with funky oddball LP cuts. Philly heads: Tonight, I will be doing a guest spot at the Excess monthly at Medusa Lounge. I packed up a bunch of house records I haven't played in ages, as well as some classic acid. Bring chemicals and hang out. Before that I will be at the Sweet Jane Vintage Clothing and Records (1742 E.Passyunk Ave.) First Friday bash from 7-10, playing slow and sleazy tunes. I don't think I packed anything [...]

Procol Harum - " A Salty Dog " and " Boredom " from A Salty Dog (1969) This band was so much more than "A Whiter Shade of Pale." ASD is a terrific set of songs characterized by rich instrumentation (not just organs) and varied styles. It's a real joy to listen to. I'm perplexed as to why it hasn't seen a re-release here in the States. In fact, the Harum's whole catalog is shamefully difficult to find. Just try [...]

It is the 4th July 1976 and a balmy summer evening in the grounds of the Castle Museum, York. We (the two Reverend Doctors and a future Mrs Grace) are watching Procol Harum play a one-off outdoor show. It is one of those rare occasions when music, location, band, audience and ambience combine to perfection. I have always loved Gary Brookers voice and it has rarely been better than on A Salty Dog. Keith Reid's lyrics manage to stay the right side of the twaddle he was sometimes capable of and the string arrangements provide the [...]
From A Salty Dog, my favorite of their albums MP3 File

Even if Procol Harum did not invent progressive rock, the English band is pretty high up on the pyramid of musical inventors. A new 2CD "Best of" compilation called Secrets of the Hive is the forerunner for a series of remastered and expanded albums over the next 18 months. A 4-CD anthology is due in the autumn of 2008. Procol Harum scored a major hit with their first single A Whiter Shade of Pale . Nobody has figured out what the song is actually about -- some [...]

There have been a good number of Procol Harum compilations over the years. The Latest, Secrets Of The Hive , features thirty-five tracks covering the twelve album, four decade history of what was once one of the UK's finest bands. Early recordings as The Paramounts are not included so matters kick of with their big payday 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'. Subsequently covered by almost a thousand artists it still sounds as majestic as ever. Equally successful at the time was 'Homburg' their second Top 10 hit which follows the same formula but lacks the [...]

Music nerds and magazines everywhere are celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the release of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band this month, so I thought it'd be cool to see what was going on in the singles charts forty years ago. 1967 was a big year in music, not only did The Beatles' most critically acclaimed album come out that year in June, but The Velvet Underground's debut album was released in March, Jimi Hendrix lit his first guitar on fire (and burned his hands, he perfected this stunt in later shows), The Stooges played their first ever [...]

Ég hef alltaf jafn gaman af því að leyfa fólki að heyra hvaðan upphafstefið í hinu margfræga lagi Whiter Shade of Pale, með Procol Harum, er fengið. Sagan segir að Matthew Fisher, hammondleikari sveitarinnar á þessum tíma, hafi einn daginn setið við orgelið og dundað sér við að spila Bach. Hafi spilamennskan fljótt orðið að spuna og út frá honum hafi svo stefið fræga orðið til. Hvort sem þetta er satt eður ei skal ósagt látið en því verður ekki neitað að, sé Whiter Shade of Pale borið saman við sónötu í G eftir Bach, eiga lögin ansi margt sameiginlegt. [...]

Procol Harum: A Salty Dog [1969] This song is dedicated "Wyrd, Wisconsin", a music blog that seemed very cool and then just disappeared off the face of the earth for some unknown reason. I first heard this song on one of Wyrd's podcasts this summer. So Wyrd, Wisconsin, wherever you are, this is to let you know that I dug the song and that your blogging was not in vain. And yes, we're ripping the vinyl transfer, even though my copy isn't that great and I also have this in digital, because Wyrd's was [...]
We suspect that Justice Blackburne has been unfairly accused of not being with in the court report in today's Daily Mirror . Covering the first day of evidence into claims by Matthew Fisher, Procul Harum organist, that he should have got more cash from his contribution to the tune, Fisher's barrister Ian Purvis checked that the judge knew his Procul from his Prolapse: "The issue before you concerns the ownership of musical copyright in the work A Whiter Shade of Pale. "In these type of cases, one always risks a 'What are the [...]
