It's Fat Tuesday in Nawlins right now, the last bit of tearing things up before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent comes around. Professor Longhair was my introduction to Cajun stomp and New Orleans in general, so if you can't be there in person, at least your ears can. Subscribe in a reader
The big push is on! A tour and TV documentary are on the horizon to promote Hugh Laurie's forthcoming Let Them Talk CD.

Filed under: Twisted Tales Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Images The streets of the Crescent City are covered in beads and go-cups: It's Mardi Gras in New Orleans. With Fat Tuesday falling on March 8 in 2011, and with Dr. John set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's time to raise a glass to the patron saint of the classic New Orleans piano sound. Henry Roeland Byrd -- [...]

mp3: Professor Longhair - Big Chief Pt.1 mp3: Professor Longhair - Big Chief Pt.2 Written by Earl King -- who sings on Part 2 and whistles on Part 1 -- Big Chief easily captures the musical spirit of New Orleans. With an infectious twinkling that hits me every single time, Professor Longhair begins on piano. Then, Smokey Johnson starts drumming a rhythm that deserves its own biopic. In almost fairytale fashion, there's also big New Orleans horns and Mac Rebennack on guitar. And, the production is immaculate. This magic all [...]
The other day I wrote about my failed 101/1001 list. I had a tough time trying to comprehend how little I achieved over the course of 1,001 days. But I didn't fail at everything I set out to achieve. Some goals I actually accomplished. One of the things I was proudest of was my alcohol consumption. Not only did I drink a record amount of whiskey in the almost three years between the start and end dates of my Day Zero project, but I drank a ton of beer. At last count, I consumed 217 new beers during my 1,001 [...]
Crawfish Fiesta is an album recorded in 1979 by Professor Longhair only months before his death in January 1980, and released in 1980 by Alligator Records. It features a band of three horns and a guitar and Dr. John as guest guitarist. The album was recorded at the SeaSaint Studios in New Orleans, and won the first W.C. Handy Blues Album of the Year award in 1980

I´m reading Juliet, Naked at the moment, which is quite hard to put down. Really should get busy to bring you edition 16 of Wild Weekend now... Ok, ok, here goes. The iPod´s on shuffle once again, and a surprise six pack in the works. No songs from Nick Hornby´s rockstar hero Tucker Crowe alas, but a whole lot of other goodies nonetheless. Such as Fallin´ In Love by American Spring, a Brian Wilson produced pop gem from ´73. Penned by Beach Boys brother and drummer [...]

Jambalaya (On the Bayou) - Hank Williams Go to the Mardi Gras - Professor Longhair

With New Orleans still on a high after the Saints' Super Bowl victory I'm sure this year's Mardi Gras will be something to remember (Hurricanes and Dixie beer not withstanding). My only Mardi Gras, back in 1996, was one of the most memorable trips of my life. Each year on Fat Tuesday, as well eating pancakes , I also like to have my own little Mardi Gras celebration. These are some of the tunes that make me wish I was in New Orleans today. MP3: Professor Longhair - Go To The [...]

Well, it's way past time for more Carnival tunage up in here. The HOTG webcast is streaming music of the season 24/7 through Mardi Gras Day, too. So, hit that anytime for more fun. But, right here, right now, I'm posting a track each from the Wild Magnolias and the Wild Tchoupitoulas for our holiday festivities; and, in between, we'll have intense, live Mardi Gras Indian-influenced funkitude from Professor Longhair, plus a pretty obscure seasonal groove offering that owes an obvious debt to Fess. So, prepare to loose that Who Dat! [...]
