Words by Carly Shields / Photos by Nick Irving Big band Brooklynites Rubblebucket sold out the Bowery Ballroom this past Saturday night, and though they haven’t quite broken into the mainstream scene, their constant touring schedule and years of festival appearances make them a pretty well known name in every scene they fit with. ![[Introducing] – Prussia](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3946124_lg.jpg)
Tweet I first became aware of plucky Detroit quintet Prussia because of their slot as openers for part of tUnE-yArDs ' past fall tour. Though I missed the tour, I was left wondering what kind of band could possibly open for Merrill Garbus' brassy, boisterous vocals and bodacious tribal beats. I got my answer when I caught Prussia during this past CMJ Marathon at a free show at Pianos. [...]

[photos by Amanda Hatfield ] Prussia is a self-described "experimental pop" band from Detroit. With two keyboards, often three guitars, and a range of sound effects to supplement the unique vocals of singer Ryan Spencer, Prussia is at the forefront of the burgeoning Michigan underground music scene. Last week, the band traveled to NYC for CMJ and performed seven times. We were fortunate to have them play at both shows we hosted this year - the NYCTaper CMJ show at Cake Shop on Thursday and the Golden Ratio / [...]
It seems like most of my band discoveries were made at BirdDog 's showcase on Saturday afternoon. Here is a shimmering indie group from Detroit, Prussia . This band tinkled my ears with the energetic vocals and perky instrumentals. Take the catchiness of Pomegranates and Vampire Weekend , then add another coat of nasally wails. Prussia is distinctively melodious. They have a series of Poor English EPs, part 1, 2 and part 3 was recently released through Notown Recordings. Here are a few samples. A little fun fact: If the band members accepted [...]
We have had some excellent CMJ shows in the past - last year's show at Cake Shop was packed at one o'clock in the afternoon. But I have to say that this year's bill is really something special. Our means of selection of the the bands is based upon the groups that have "wowed" us in the last year. Of the eight bands on this bill, seven have appeared on nyctaper in the last twelve months (sans Prussia, who we've been trying to see!). Here are the important details: Thursday October 20, [...]
Throughout the past three months Detroit band, Prussia has released a series of 10"'s called the Poor English series. Part 1 & 2 are out now! The Poor English series consists of modest drum loops, complex guitar compositions, and vocal harmonies that together all support the sweet and nasally singer, Ryan Spencer. Through stories of suicide, sexual, and illusory love all portrayed in catchy pop songs, lyrically it is T.S. Eliot's drunken writing on a bathroom wall. After already sharing the stage with Fiery Furnaces, The Flaming Lips, Quasi, EMA, Dr. [...]

Filed under: Exclusive Tell All Your Friends PR In the slowly decaying urban automotive center of Detroit, one band's creative engine continues to run among hundreds of Midwestern rock outfits clambering for attention. Prussia is the real deal. Combining Broadway-esque affectations and operatic sea changes, these Northern dudes' latest is pushing the envelope of progressive indie rock. Prussia's first and second installation of their 10-inch series 'Poor English' is a combination of epic poetry [...]

It must be tough to find good fits to open for tUnE-yArDs now that Merrell Garbus et. al. have made the leap to sellout headliners. tUnE-yArDs’ music shares little kinship with prevailing indie rock tropes, and not just because Garbus doesn’t bother with guitars, or that she doesn’t bother with a stringency of structure. Other bands may be composing poems (if they’re lucky). Garbus is, in a very particular sense, writing sonnets. So perhaps Prussia were as good a pairing as one can expect. A bunch of boys with guitars, they did [...]

photos by Sarahana Garbus studied at Smith, the highly selective all-women's college in Massachussetts. It was a revelation after high school, "where girls were generally into having eating disorders and looking pretty and having sex. I still feel this kind of embitteredness about the fact that a lot of the men I work with haven't had such paralysing experiences growing up." Her college experience included a semester in Kenya, where she lived among Muslim women and explored the country's music. She emerged with [...]
Prussia's music is energetic, poppy- and melodious. You feel like dancing, though there’s no way in hell you would describe this as dance music. Waltzes, African drum beats, acapella breakdowns, and the gentle ringing of sleigh bells all fit into their unique arrangements naturally. Over the next three months the Detroit band will be a [...]

Detroit's Prussia are one of those bands that you've got to give a chance in order to fully sink your teeth into their catalogue. They combine odd shifts in mood and tempo, utilizing all their instruments to craft genuinely interesting chamber pop masterpieces. The group is in the middle of releasing a set of 103 singles, and we've got a premiere of one of the tracks of the second 103 from the Poor English collection. You can grab the first single now, but the second one, with the [...]
"Sleeper" comes courtesy of Detroit outfit Prussia . A dark, funeral parlor ballad, the song slumps out of its coffin with a meandering organ and weary, angelic female backing vocals. Lead singer Ryan Spencer then takes the lead with a croon reminiscent of early Bowie's more evil moments. Half way through song reaches a death rattle with a parade of crunching guitar and rumbling drums before taking a brighter turn to close with the high-notes of a plucking piano. Prussia has gained attention in their hometown and beyond for their memorable live shows, the large swath of [...]

Fun pop jams are proving to be harder to come by now that summer is winding down and bands are preparing for more subdued fall releases. Well don't tell Detroit band Prussia and their sweet pop tune called "Mediator". The song appears on a new 4 song EP from the band Poor English, Pt. 1 which is available on bandcamp at a name your own price deal or for purchase on 103 vinyl . It's an enjoyable listen to say the least. Download: Prussia - Mediator [MP3]

Prussia's strategy is to divide and conquer: with the announcement of their upcoming tour with El Ten Eleven, the Detroit bunch simultaneously reveal their plans for a 3-part 10" release set to span the three months they are on tour. Entitled the Poor English series, the first part dropped last night with the second and third being released in September and October, respectively. With frantic and melodious energy, Poor English, Pt. 1 is pop music that takes an adventurous approach to d...
Tomorrow Detroit's Prussia bring us "T.S. Eliot's drunken scribbling on a bathroom wall" in their new "Poor English" 10-inch release series. Tomorrow Detroit's Prussia are kicking off the release of a series of 10-inch singles with "Mediator". This three-part series is titled "Poor English" and will roll out over the next three months while the band heads out on tour with El Ten Eleven. "Poor English" is an ambitious undertaking from a group known for tackling serious subjects underneath glossy pop melodies; in this go-around they sing tales of "suicide, misogyny, sexual vacancy, and the crippling...
