It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

The 7-inch single has been around since 1949. That's 62 years and counting! In my humble opinion the 7-inch single is still the essence, pinnacle and acme of pop perfection. Optimally, it's one song, one side (Some try to squeeze on more). That's no room for screwing up. You always hear that releasing a 7-inch is a money losing proposition, but that thankfully, doesn't keep pop geeks from doing it. In honor of true blue pop geek vinyl junkies out there, here is the fourth and final installment of the annual Finest Kiss top 40 7-inch singles countdown. [...]

If you can get past the weird pedo-stache on Chuck and the voices, this short courtesy of Benny & Rafi Fine and the animators at TwoAnimators is pretty funny. Stick through it until the end. The bloopers vid is just as great, maybe even better. [via cartoonbrew ] Tweet
And seriously, his voice must have just changed because Archy Marshall, or Zoo Kid, is barely 16 years old. Young age is typically a gimmick music journalists latch onto, and it's a disservice to most of the talented young adults out there. But the voice that comes out of his narrow throat is a deep [...]
One Minute Puberty from bitteschön.tv on Vimeo . The animation in this video is very impressive, and they did a great job in summing up puberty in this short clip.

Some great people are releasing records north the US border, namely Telephone Explosion Records , which began as many labels do these days, releasing only tapes. A few releases in they morphed into digital and vinyl releases and their newest from band Puberty, which consists of members of the Shins and Intelligence. The the bass line rides like Pink Panther and is fraught with vibes of a smoky lounge. Telephone Explosion is currently selling this through their website as a 73 single.

Justin Bieber is sporting that "I stuck my finger in a light socket" look for his new cover for "Rolling Stone" magazine! In the current issue, the Biebz talks about sex, politics, puberty and music! The Biebz looks like he's trying to grow up too fast, what's with that hair?!? Is that his "sexy" look??? On becoming a U.S. citizen: "You guys are evil. Canada's the best country in [...]

Invitations Estate Sales - by The Intelligence ( previously on CWR) A couple weeks ago I posted about the Seattle band The Intelligence because of the amount of time I've been spending with them lately. It turns out that two of the band's primary members, Lars Finberg and Susanna Welbourne have a side project called Puberty . A few demos have been going around the web since early last year, but their first (self-titled) single will be coming out any day now on [...]
Carlos Lopez , local and recently prolific ( peep his Vimeo page ) music movie maker, recently shot a video for a song from the Intelligence 's Males , one of my ten favorite local records from 2010 . It was one of those Kickstarter deals where people donate money to the project. It's... "PRETTY COOL!" Kudos to YOU if you lovingly supported this little adventure. The song, of course is "Bong Life" , and the moving picture is every bit as rapid and zany as the song itself. I wonder where [...]

Lars Finberg and Susanna Welbourne of much lauded indie band The Intelligence have a side project on the go titled Puberty , which make Google searches interesting if nothing else. There have been a few demos doing the rounds on the web since spring of last year, but their first (self-titled) single proper is out on Telephone Explosion imminently. Take a listen to Invitations below with its Ennio Morricone inspired start, which then morphs into an song of unusually metallic, earwormy catchiness. Kraut-pop anyone? Whatever you want [...]

I remember this time I was lost north of Boston trying to get to Salem to check out a witch trial and the House of the Seven Gables. I stopped at a gas station to get directions and the guy at the station told me to go through Puberty, and stay straight to get to Salem. Looking at the map, I couldn't find Puberty. So I ask him, "Where's Puberty?" He tells me to just keep going down the road I'm on and it's the next town. I show him the map and say I don't [...]

Yo yo, we've gotten not one, but two requests to fulfill your Halloween dreams. You won't have to be scared about this mix disappointing with bits of spooky, a-tonal, and straight-up darkly danceable tunes. So put on your leather bustier, or your lingerie and kitten ears or whatever other scantily clad outfit you find yourself in this spooky weekend (that includes you, boys) and pretend to be whatever you like as you listen to these tunes for Kelly and Morgan, who are both throwing Halloween parties this week. Enjoy. "Timber Timbre - Lay Down [...]
Justin Bieber admitted: puberty is affecting his voice. The kid is going through that period of his life, when boys "meet" the razor blade for the first time and their voice is changing, all this meaning that they are turning into men. Unfortunately, by growing up, Justin is starting to loose the ability to produce those high pitched sounds. He might still do it, but with greater effort. The young artist declared to Vibe.com that puberty is absolutely normal and every boy's voice changes through it. Justin has Usher on his side to help him, by teaching him how to [...]

The new Intelligence album is called Males and is out on In The Red on 24 August. (I feel like MBV...actually this post would stop after the first sentence, the album artwork would be larger and a lot more of you would be looking at this if that were the case.) This record is reported to be a full band effort as opposed to the regular Lars doing it all himself thing. As evidenced by the track list it contains some songs previously released elsewhere, though they are undoubtedly rerecorded. [...]
Performance video of "Pass Times" by Calgary's Friendo.
As Butts would say , I'm hung OVER. Here are 90 seconds of Puberty playing at Trainwreck last night. It's only 90 seconds because I was standing on a chair cuz there were so many flipping people there and I couldn't see even though I was standing on a flipping chair . Here's to low quality internet clutter! They sounded extremely tight, by the way (pretty much like the Intelligence, but tight nonetheless). I really hope they release some recordings. [...]

You mustn't forget! This Thursday, the third and final (at least until the summer, anyway) installment of Trainwreck goes down at the kitschy confines of the Orient Express in SODO . Come for the (Chinese) food, stay for the Puberty . I haven't been to either of the first two, but word on the cyberstreet is that the party is without equal and space fills up fast (capacity is limited). You can reserve a spot over on brownpapertickets.com . . And, just in case it slipped your [...]

Books away, pencils out. Pop quiz time. First question, Puberty is: A. The House Band for the new monthly Trainwreck dance-debauchery party at the Orient Express. B. Side project of Intelligence dynamic duo Lars Finberg and Susanna Welbourne. C. That awkward stage that all humans go through to reach sexual maturation, and that most would like to forget. D. All of the above. The answer of course is D, but for purposes here we're (mostly) interested in A & B. The Intelligence [...]
