Satan’s Inn: Anthrax-Alarm!

Scott [...]

My Recap of Bonnaroo: Part I

My Recap of Bonnaroo: Part I In the words of Bob Marley, one good thing about music is when it hits you, you feel no pain. Bonnaroo, one of the largest eastern festivals in North America hosted more than 70 000+ people this year with headliners such as Bruce Springsteen, Beastie Boys and Phish. But really, these were just headliners and in my opinion, not the real headliners of the festival. With performers ranging from Of Montreal, the Decemberists, Animal Collective, and Grizzly Bear to Femi Kuti, PUBLIC ENEMY, Erykah Badu, and Murs, you could easily be a neutral fan of the Boss and Phish-or in my [...]

Stephen McCauley Throws It Down

Stephen McCauley Throws It Down This Hip Hop Week idea has turned out to be insanely popular. We've had so many entries and suggestions that it could easily develop into Hip Hop Month. It won't, though, so we're gonna be faced with some tough choices about what to include come the end of the week. Still, that's a good place to be. Today's selection is courtesy of Stephen McCauley , the presenter of the Electric Mainline show on Radio Foyle, and all round great guy. All three of his picks are classic cuts and it's a pleasure to post them [...]

Pitchfork Chooses NBA Finals Game 5 Over Phish

Pitchfork Chooses NBA Finals Game 5 Over Phish Phish is playing at Bonnaroo on Friday and Sunday, but Pitchfork (by and through posters Tom Breihan and Amy Phillips) is not excited about it.  Instead of the Phish set on Friday, the Pitchfork Guide directs you to Phoenix and Public Enemy (we actually recommend a similar move on our recommened list ).  The more interesting Pitchfork choice comes on Sunday when there is no other band playing but Phish.  I've seen Phish before, but I'm still going to check them out to close out the fest.  Pitchfork will be in the Cinema Tent watching Game 5 [...]

Roots Picnic - Philly

Roots Picnic - Philly The 2nd annual Roots Picnic took place in Philadelphia, PA this past Saturday, June 6th. The day long festival was curated by The Roots included performances by Santigold, Kid Cudi, TV On The Radio, Public Enemy, and two sets from The Roots themselves. Santigold pretty much stole the show with her new live band and a special guest spot from Philly hometown hero Spank Rock. The band behind her provided the live show with that extra spark she's been missing on stage. She's decided to hold onto her two fly-girl, both of whom who are still really dope. [...]

Flavor Flav And The Pirate Bay: The New Faces Of The New World Order

Flavor Flav And The Pirate Bay: The New Faces Of The New World Order At Saturday's Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, Flavor Flav took a moment at the end of Public Enemy's Roots-and-Antibalas-aided performance of It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back to ask the crowd, quite seriously, if we would vote for him for President someday. The "YEAHhhheehhhhhh..." in response sounded like a balloon being slowly de-heliumed, and he quickly abandoned that line of questioning. And yet, I have to wonder: Who would I rather have in a position of authority: Flavor Flav or a member of the copyfighting, Pirate Bay-sympathetic Pirate Party, which won a European parliamentary [...]

Which Classic Albums Most Deserve To Be Re-Imagined In A Live Setting?

Which Classic Albums Most Deserve To Be Re-Imagined In A Live Setting? Tomorrow I'll be tripping down to Philadelphia to attend The Roots Picnic , an all-day affair masterminded by Jimmy Fallon's sidemen (haha, jk guys) and featuring two sets by the band; TV On The Radio, Santigold, and Antibalas are also on the bill. But perhaps the most intriguing part of the day's festivities will be the start-to-finish performance of Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back -yes, they've done it before , but this time, the musical duties will be handled by the Roots and Antibalas. This and the impending relaunch [...]

7-inch series, part 563

7-inch series, part 563 Public Enemy - Fight the Power label: Motown year: 1989 side a: Fight the Power side b: Fight the Power (Flavor Flav Meets Spike Lee) www.publicenemy.com I used to love that Bomb Squad sound. Well, I still do, but I hardly ever listen to it anymore. I'm not too fond of the PE productions of the last couple years. And the last time I saw them live, at Lowlands I don't remember which year, but that wasn't a good [...]

It Is Time To Usher In A New Era Of Jock Jams

It Is Time To Usher In A New Era Of Jock Jams Now that the Carolina Hurricanes have been eliminated from the NHL playoffs, Merge Records impresario Mac McCaughan has moved on from chronicling the 'Canes' efforts to talking about the music that arenas employ to get fans in prime freak-out mode. In 2006, he brought some albums put out by his label down to the Hurricane home base, RBC Center, in hopes of breaking through what he called its "particularly stultifying mix of Top 40 / Classic rock / Emo (? i don't know what to call some of the songs on there) / Sports Disco," and it worked, [...]

GANGI: WILL PROBABLY NOT DESTROY THE UNIVERSE

Gangi will be playing their final May residency at Spaceland tonight so we are lifting this interview out of our recent archives. The vinyl version of their album A is almost out and they are already working on the follow-up Gun Show , with a title track that sounds like T. Rex and Funkadelic together in three minutes. They speak here months before when issues of toxic mold were much more on their minds. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

Crusty Clip of the Week: Anthrax feat. Public Enemy - Bring the Noise

Public Enemy & Anthrax - Bring the noise
Every single Wednesday without fail, your hosts post a suitably stale video clip that we think needs to be revisited. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com.by The WZA'd (Philadelphia) I've never been the biggest fan of Anthrax, but I've never disliked them either. However, a few months ago I heard their version of "Bring the Noise"

8+ “Hard Times” by Woody Guthrie

8+ “Hard Times” by Woody Guthrie "Hard Times" by Woody Guthrie which clocks in at 9:41 . Hard times are often defined by competing and contradictory urges. There's the need to innovate and flaunt convention in the face of crisis at one end and the impulse to bundle up with the known and familiar at the other. That's human nature, baby. In 1940, the American public exercised both of these impulses at once, electing beloved incumbent Franklin Delano Roosevelt to an unprecedented third-term as President of the [...]
