Each canvas in the series measures 60 by 33 inches, but the statement each makes looms way larger. Arizona's SB 1070 law, which many feel encourages police to racially profile Latinos, takes America a large step towards fascism. Ultimately, the decision to allow America to turn on the come-one-come-all philosophy that once made it the most progressive country in the world rests with we, the people. And it is the people whose minds Chuck D seeks to move with By The Time I Got To Arizona, his limited edition fine art collaboration with notorious Los Angeles creativity house SceneFour that [...]

If you don't know about Lil' B by now, then you've probably been in hiding for the past few years. The man is all over the place and boasts literally thousands of tracks, which ain't too bad for a 21 year old. But besides being incredibly prolific, the Based God is impressively consistent. Lil' B's most recent track, "Base For Your Face," features a particularly impressive cast with verses from legends Phonte of Little Brother and Jean Grae , and production by the infamous 9 th Wonder with prominent samples from Public Enemy 's "Can't Truss It." Perhaps you've heard of this fellow. As the man who wrote "She Watch Channel Zero," I have to ask what you think of the Charlie Sheen tomfoolery that's been dominating the cable news networks as the Middle East is simultaneously in the midst of a regional Revolution. The corporations have been extremely at successful at becoming stand-ins for the government. The goal of both is to turn human beings into consumers and have them worship the concepts of ownership. Turning humans into robots. They thrive on the dysfunction [...]
When it came time to decide what this week's Top 5 topic was gonna be I didn't have to look any further than the front page of my favorite news sites. The topic picked itself. Protest songs. It's pretty self-explanatory. Go! Iris Dement - Wasteland of The Free : From Iris's 1996 album, The Way I Should. Otis Gibbs - The People's Day : I see hope for our country in what's happening in others lately. One day our whispers will be louder than their screams. The people's day [...]
One of the biggest perks of attending a large, diverse university is the free stuff student organizations manage to round up for the student body. Besides all of the free Chik-Fil-A, sodas, and t-shirts, schools usually put on free concerts too. While, some of the lineups do end up looking pretty cheesy, Vanderbilt University has been putting together stellar bills for almost 25 years. Early versions of their Rites of Spring Festival featured names like Bo Diddley, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Roots, Run DMC, and the Violent Femmes [...]

It recently occured to me that we hadn't ever featured PE in our Classics section. While this will definitely not be the last time they feature on these pages, this is without doubt my favourite track from hip-hop's finest team. Jam packed with Chuck D's jaw-dropping vocal power and a lyric regarding Arizona's policy on MLK's birthday , it also features one of the downright funkiest basslines ever to be committed to vinyl. Throw in the epic gospel choir backing and you have one of the finest moments in the entire [...]

The Spoken Word Intro Mix
While perusing through my music library the other day I realized just how many of my favorite songs from the last year included spoken word introductions, either as samples, recordings, or by the artists themselves. This prompted further exploration and after a bit more searching I was able to round up enough spoken intro songs to warrant a mix. Some ground rules: I didn't include count-ins (one, two, three, FOUR!), studio talk ("Jim, can you record the talk back?"), spoken word portions in the middle of the song ("Graveyard Girl") or songs that are entirely spoken word ("Century of Elvis"). [...]

Album Obsessions – Anthrax "Persistence of Time"
My transition from rap to metal was fairly quick, straight path. I started down the rock road with a lot of classics, like Aerosmith and Hendrix then moving into harder stuff like AC/DC and Def Leopard. Once I got a taste of some heavy guitars I couldn't get enough. The next thing I knew I was rockin' out to Metallica and Skid Row and buying piles of Suicidal Tendencies cassettes. Anthrax was a natural fit for my sensibilities. With my rap background and love for Stephen King, I [...]
