DeVotchKa Another new release Tuesday is here, and a good day it is. Many good records are out, including one from the Denver, Colorado-based four-piece musical collective DeVotchKa . The group's name is an allusion to Anthony Burgess and the Russian-based word he coined for "young girl." Musically, it's a beautiful and sweeping combination of American folk and punk, mariachi, and Eastern European and Latin American sounds. Among other things, the group scored the Grammy-nominated soundtrack for the critically acclaimed Little Miss Sunshine and released Curse Your Little Heart , [...]
Today's show is a bit of a South by Southwest showcase with a few other bits thrown in. I'm short on time today, but we'll be featuring more artists involved in the festival in the next couple of days - you'll also get a slew of mp3's. Enjoy the show. I recently received a question from a musician who is having more than her fair share of problems obtaining print media coverage in areas where her band is touring. Hopefully, my advice and ideas that I gave her can benefit you and your band as well should you experience similar difficulties with obtaining print media support for your gigs/tours. ______________________________ __________________ FROM: Megan I started touring with my band last fall (we were in New York City before that...), and we are about to leave on another tour for [...]

Band of Annuals Well, I'm extremely relieved and quite happy at the moment. I had my very first in-studio performance and interview today with Salt Lake City's alt-country unit Band of Annuals , and it couldn't have gone any better (for the first time). The bands members include Jay Henderson on acoustic guitar, vocals, and harmonica; Jeremi Hanson on vocals, wurlitzer, and organ; Brent Dreiling on pedal steel; Jamie Timm on electric guitar; and Charlie lewis on percussion. They really are quite fine folks and I'd like to thank them once again for coming [...]

So this is interesting--the Raleigh News & Observer (or News & Disturber as the locals call it) is profiling a startup that aims to increase the online presence of label-less bands . My first though is--is that necessary? We've all been beaten over the heads with how Myspace and music/mp3 blogs are making labels unnecessary for indie bands, and new artists like Lily Allen who are making their name almost entirely from online buzz. (Note: She says she's "pop/hyphy/ska." What's hyphy?) The site isn't up yet, but I'm very curious how [...]
