Mark Meatto, Director of How to Grow a Band BY FRANKLIN P. LAVIOLA Back in 2008, filmmaker Mark Meatto went on the road with Punch Brothers , the not-quite bluegrass quintet led by mandolinist Chris Thile, former frontman of Nickel Creek. The resulting film, How To Grow a Band , captures Punch Brothers in the months surrounding the release of their debut album Punch . The band has [...]

Walking into the 9:30 Club on a crisp Thursday night, I had high expectations for The Punch Brothers’ live show. The bluegrass/acoustic group’s latest record, Who’s Feeling Young Now? had been on my most-played list for the preceding weeks and my dad, not easily impressed by new bands, claimed their St. Louis show to be among one of the best he had ever been to. Thankfully, in the course of the roughly hour and a half set the band met my high hopes and put on virtuosic display I won’t soon forget. [...]

Well, it took a bit longer than expected (losing your job in November and having a baby in January will disrupt the blog-writing process a bit), but Given and Taken in Ink's list for best albums of 2012 is finally here. This year, a handful of bands came out of nowhere and blew me away. I knew right away that debut albums from Drew Smith and The Rest would stand among the best releases of the year. They are joined by 28 other great albums, by artists well-known and obscure. I'm pleased that GTI's 2012 list is a [...]

It’s coming on 2013, and for weeks, otherbloggers and tastemakers have been touting their 2012 picks, jostling to be the best and first match for your own preferences, inviting debate over position in the ranks. And once again, here I am, after weeks of archival digging and false starts, late out of the gate and still struggling with the sheer hubris of presenting my own Year In Review. As I noted last December atop our Best Coverfolk of 2011 feature, my reluctance to pass judgement isn’t a cop-out. I’m a relatively fickle listener, but I’m [...]

Over the past few months Bonnaroo has been rolling out videos from their Hay Bale Sessions series of performances on the Bonnaroo365 YouTube channel . The series is described as “Tucked away backstage at Bonnaroo, buried beneath a stack of hay bales, is a room where artists duck out of the weekend’s madness to play stripped-down versions of their songs. The Hay Bale Sessions will lead you through a secret doorway where you can join artists to watch these pure and intimate performances.” The latest set of videos from the Hay Bale Sessions features HT faves Punch Brothers . • Facebook • Twitter • Delicious • Email • RSS The Punch Brothers are rolling into Kansas City today to play the Beaumont Club - but my job today isn't going to convince to go to their amazing show. Because I honestly think, if you ever were going to go to a Punch Brothers show, you're already going tonight because you know they never fail to deliver. My job instead is to make sure you don't miss out on The Milk [...]
What started as a side project where friends could get together to eat, drink, and jam, the Brooklyn band Punch Brothers quickly became something more. The band has toured non-stop since the beg...

Show choices for the 1st of December: ► Punch Brothers bring their memorable bluegrass music to the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A.. The Milk Carton Kids — the L.A. duo of Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, recently signed to Anti- Records — open. ► Karl Wallinger [pictured] and World Party return to L.A. for a date at the Troubadour in support of April's release of the five-disc retrospective, "Arkeology." World Party, of course, were a familiar presence to the "120 Minutes" generation, releasing fine [...]

All across town and up and down the mountain, the houses begin to take on their holiday cheer. From sprawling displays that smother the lawn to simple candlelit windows, each one adds their own special spice to the bouquet that is the impending season as each yard becomes a diorama of Santas, trees, angels, strings of lights, and more. And we are glad, and merry, as we pass by in the cold. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and it's beginning to sound a bit like it, too, what with bloggers [...]

![[ALBUM] Various Artists – Holidays Rule](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4595738_lg.jpg)
I'll be the first to admit that I have never gotten too excited for holiday music. Often times it just feels over-done, half-hearted, and tacky (Sorry, I ran out of hyphenated compound words to describe Christmas albums after two). There's only so many things you can change in "Jingle Bells" before it gets old. With that said, I think I have finally found a holiday compilation album that I can enjoy. The artist lineup is stellar, with the likes of Fun., The Shins, The Civil Wars, Punch Brothers, Head and the Heart, Andrew Bird , and many more. So [...]

Punch Brothers have announced a new EP for next month. Not content with giving us the pleasure of excellent bluegrass long-player Who's Feeling Young Now? earlier this year, the EP will be released on November 13th. Ahoy! is a collection of five b-sides from the Who’s Feeling Young Now? recording sessions, produced by Jacquire King. The EP includes three covers (“Another New World” by Josh Ritter, “Down Along the Dixie Line” by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and “Icarus Smicarus” by Mclusky), the band's arrangement of the traditional tune “Moonshiner,” and an original instrumental [...]

By definition, receiving the MacArthur Fellowship "genius" grant always comes as a surprise: candidates for the five year, no-strings-attached award are nominated through a secretive and anonymous process, and most tend not to know they have even been nominated until that call comes the day of the announcement. The five-year award, for "exceptional creativity, as demonstrated through a track record of significant achievement, and manifest promise for important future advances" is a bit like a Nobel Prize for general awesomeness, socio-culturally speaking, and those who win come from myriad fields: geriatricians, filmmakers, authors, historians, and social services [...]
