Back here with your week's positive vibes. This week I'm especially excited about two releases. Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires Of The City is modern pop music that reaches towards epic messages ("Ya Hey") while still grounding itself in a reality ("Unbelievers" and "Step") that keeps it from becoming too big. Ezra Kroenig has never written songs that play this personal and his band has never been so experimental. Pure X's Crawling Up The Stairs is a more low-key release, but after the nocturnal smokiness of Pleasure, it's definitely something you should check [...]
While we're all waiting for the warm weather to officially take hold (we've been given an enticingly cruel taste of it here in Northwest), Vampire Weekend has created the perfect summer album to fuel your anticipation. At times wistfully nostalgic, percolatingly peppy and even fiercely energetic, Modern Vampires of the City is undoubtedly one of the best albums of the year so far. KEXP Music Director, Don Yates, calls the NYC band's third album their "most mature and musically adventurous release to date" with its "impressive variety of beautifully crafted, intricately detailed songs with imaginative arrangements [...]
Crawling Up The Stairs , the beautiful and at times emotionally overwhelming/devastating (see "Never Alone," " Thousand Year Old Child ") new LP from Austin's Pure X , is officially out today on the great Acéphale . To mark the occasion, we're psyched to have the band take over the site for the day; you can stay up on all of Pure X 's posts throughout the day right here , and listen to the new record after the jump...
Pure X released their hazy debut LP Pleasure in 2011 and May 14, 2013 will see the release of their sophomore LP Crawling Up The Stairs via Acephale/Merok. While "Things In My Head" represented a logical step forward for Pure X, "Someone Else" was more of a wildcard and a little more abrasive than we've heard Pure X be. The third single from the band's sophomore LP is called "Thousand Year Old Child" and it churns like a song you might here on a Woods album with some signature Pure [...]
Let's get the party started... FRIDAY THE CELL PHONES It's really no secret how much Loud Loop Press loves The Cell Phones. The local outfit's rhythm section – Justin Purcell, drums; Ryan Szeszycki, bass – wag a fierce, pounding assault that infiltrates every pore on your body, jostling every cell until you’re arms are flailing and feet are kicking up dust. What really makes The Cell Phones rise to the ranks [...]
"It was just one of those things that was bound to happen, eventually." Drummer Austin Youngblood is reflecting on the origins of Pure X - then called Pure Ecstasy - back in 2009. "We've all been hanging and jamming with each other for longer than I care to recall. Basically, Nate (Grace, vocals) had written some songs, and wanted a band to back him. Jesse (Jenkins, guitarist) and I were in a different band together at the time, so it was a pretty natural step for the three of us." Hailing from Austin, Texas, the [...]
Best New Music Releases, Week of May 14th – Vampire Weekend, Wild Nothing, Small Black, Pure X, Classixx
We surveyed IRC readers asking what's their favorite album of the week, and not surprisingly, the vast majority picked Vampire Weekend's first album in three years, the just dropped Modern Vampires of the City. By the time Contra, the band's sophomore album, was released in 2010, a backlash was already building up against the wildly [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Pure X – Crawling Up The Stairs
Crawling Up The Stairs is the sophomore release – and follow-up to 2011’s stellar Pleasure – from Austin psych-rock band Pure X. The album was inspired by Nate Grace’s personal struggles caused by a serious leg injury and recovery. Crawling Up The Stairs is about what you do after you've realized that escaping a bad situation isn't an option and the moment when you have to face the situation head on and the emotional turmoil that ensues. While Crawling Up The Stairs stays faithful to the heavy sound found on Pleasure but adds shimmering atmospherics and a new perspective [...]

Interview: Pure X
Pure X's debut album, Pleasure, was great. It was a steady, unrelenting exploration of a singular sonic mood, almost as if it was conceived, written and recorded during one, long, summertime rainstorm. Things are a ... read more
Pure X Ticket Giveaway + Show Preview
There's been tons of great records being pushed upon the Internet world lately, but one that I'm personally excited about it is the new effort from Pure X . Crawling Up the Stairs is on my list of anticipated albums, and it's great that an Austin band is making such big waves. But, in other news, they'll be playing their album release next Thursday, giving us Austinites a chance to hear the new tunes live at Holy Mountain on Thursday, May 23rd; they'll be joined by Troller and Versus . Pure X: Crawling Up the Stairs
This Austin trio's debut was a pitch-perfect evocation of early 4AD LPs of yore. With a bigger budget and more professional sheen, the group explores more textures but fails to create many songs to compliment their atmospheric prowess. If you're a young musician or band that is just starting your career, there is no greater gift -- or curse -- than having your very first effort get bestowed with the following words: "it's a promising debut." Promising because you might be good but you're not there yet. You need to figure some things out first, cut back on your [...]
