It has been a while since we've had a round-up from round the web and our favourite blogs. These are some of the tunes that have been monopolising the MM stereo recently and should get your week off with a snap, crackle and pop! We have a new track from The Crocodiles with the snaking, noise-pop of Endless Flowers from forthcoming album of the same name and some more crunchy garage rock from the prolific Fresh & Onlys with new single I Would Not Know The Devil . Third up, is [...]

Philadelphia's Purling Hiss recorded a new song, "Lolita," for the May edition of Shaking Through , the partnership between Weathervane Music and XPN that supports independent artists by giving them an opportunity to record new music in a professional studio. This session was curated by Adam Granduciel (of The War on Drugs), whose task was to make the band's "massive size translate really well into a super powerful final mix." "Lolita" is a loud, confident, and in-your-face wall of noisy classic rock riffage. Check it out: Listen to Granduciel talk about [...]

Check out below the May Episode of Weathervane Music & WXPN 's Shaking Through with bluesy, psychedelic ROCKERS Purling Hiss as well as an interview with this month's curator The War on Drugs 's Adam Granduciel, who also helped out with engineering/producing duties alongside Jon Low at Miner Street Recordings. You can take a listen to and download the fruits of their labor "Lolita" for free HERE . Enjoy! (Photo by Peter English)

Photo by Julie Van Wassen Words by Vici A peek into my calendar tells me that concert season has officially begun! Thanks to a recent surge of show announcements, my schedule is rapidly filling up. Pittsburgh venues have really stepped up their game in booking indie acts, which is great news for a frequent concert-goer like myself (though maybe not so great for my wallet). I bought my Dr. Dog ticket back in January, when not many concerts were on the horizon, so I'd [...]

No real surprise here: Jack White will perform at this year's South by Southwest . As part of Third Man Records' official South by Southwest showcase, the company's director will headline a bill that includes Karen Elson, John Reilly & Friends, The Black Belles, and special guests White Rabbits, Reggie Watts, Natural Child, Electric Guest, and Purling Hiss. The whole shebang is being billed as the Texas Stand-off and the showdown begins Friday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m. at The Stage on Sixth Street. Also, if you're down in Austin, TX next week, keep your [...]

I was nursing a bad hangover yesterday so I decided to take a nap before dinner, and didn't wake up until this morning. But I'm feeling very refreshed. Well, this nasty little ditty is helping me kickstart my day. Below is Purling Hiss shredding it up on "Almost Washed My Hair" from a performance on October 22, 2011 at LA's The Satellite when they were on tour opening for The War on Drugs . Purling Hiss is currently on the road with Dr. Dog . Special thanks to RockNYCLiveandRecorded.com for the great sounding piece [...]

Dr. Dog celebrated the release of their new album, 'Be the Void,' in Solana Beach // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

This is part one of my look back on some of my favorite Philly based music that came out in 2011. Right up front I want to say that The Roots and The War On Drugs put out two of my favorite records of the year. I'm not going to dwell on the massive goodness of these records cause, let's face it, these two bands have a profile that transcends the illadelph; although it wasn't too long ago that the only [...]

Despite the low-fi label that has been attached to the musical descriptions of both WOODS and Purling Hiss , neither band had anything but high energy and a lively rock 'n roll spirit emanating from them last Saturday when they performed at the Rock & Roll Hotel on H Street. WOODS created their rock 'n roll ambience with more of a classic '60s vibe. Long, delicate tracks created a trance-like state that seemed to borrow from both the sitar days of The Beatles and the "Soul Meets Body" era of Death Cab For Cutie. [...]

[photo courtesy is Scott Troyan ] There is something completely natural and unassuming about Mike Polizze's approach to music. He's recorded under the name Purling Hiss for the last several years, but recently recruited a band to perform live. Purling Hiss is all about no-nonsense guitar-centered hard rock. Polizze is from the Philadelphia school of long-haired guitar, which includes Kurt Vile and Adam Granduciel of The War On Drugs . The common characteristic (besides the hair) is that each of these artists is a fairly mellow and unassuming person off-stage who immediately [...]

Purling Hiss bring their raw brand of psychedelic blues guitar jams to Johnny Brenda's tonight. Like a mix of the Stooges and Mudhoney, the crew of Mike Polizze (guitar/vox), Kiel Everett (bass), and Michael Sneeringer (drums) lay down unrelenting fuzzed out walls of sound. Fresh from their recent national tour with The War on Drugs , the three-piece should be ready to go for their homecoming performance this evening. They'll be joined by the emotive dark pop sounds of Puerto Rico Flowers (the latest offering from Clockcleaner 's John Starkey III) and fellow psych rockers [...]
