Amongst the various entries on this week's new release schedule, we were rather chuffed to see a new album by Washington, DC, hardcore progenitors Bad Brains. We'll be honest and admit we'd rather spaced on the fact that the band's classic lineup were playing together again — the last piece of Bad Brains-related material we got our hands on was frontman HR's solo record a few years back — and the news got us thinking about other great '80s bands whose continued existence is a cause for celebration. Sure, there've been a whole heap of lucrative high-profile '80s reunions over [...]
The video lounge in the original Danceteria, West 38th Street, NYC, circa 1980 Pylon makes a return in this week's edition of Nightclubbing while Pat & Emily discuss the dawn of eighties nightlife, when nightclubs were open until the dawn and beyond.. Long before the High Line, the Continental over on West 25th Street started attracting some uptown types. Studio 54 had recently closed and celebrities like tennis star Vitas Gerulaitis and regulars like Billy Idol would rub elbows in the ultimate back room, a space [...]
Step back in time, and step into Hurrah, circa 1980. Music by Pylon.
This week (and a few days late, I must point out), Pat & Emily profess their love for Pylon - the dubby dance band from Athens, GA, who have never really gotten their due. This, despite the love from not only modern day hipster tastemakers like DFA Records (see their two Pylon reissues at the top of the page here ), but also fellow Athens scenemakers & rock stars in the making, R.E.M. Pylon is the greatest group from the new wave scene that you probably never heard of. When Rolling Stone saluted R.E.M. [...]

Salon interviews Michael Stipe about R.E.M. calling it a day. Pitchfork reviews the group's latest great hits collection, Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982 - 2011 , which includes the beautiful new tune " We All Go Back To Where We Belong. I played this cover the other night while DJing the Real Estate show here in LA. As the crowd was (mostly) early-mid twenties I was not surprised when a number of folks inquired as to the origins of the song (Bradford Cox's voice and vocal tics are fairly recognizable to the converted). What did surprise [...]

it starts with a sadness, a loneliness. sometimes i don’t believe the light will ever come again, he says. it starts with a static spirit, an ache for something beyond this . all those nights gazing into the sky watching other forms of life pass by, he says. it starts with a call to arms. go break the ice, he implores, baptise me in the stream. amen brother. oh it’s a joyous thing to hear railing against ugly with beauty, fighting poverty (in every sense of the word) with poetry. i will wear my heart [...]

Pylon is an American rock band from Athens, Georgia. The band's danceable jangle pop sound influenced the Athens, Georgia music scene and the 1980s American pop underground. Allmusic wrote that Pylon's "role as elder statesmen of the alternative rock explosion is unassailable". Originally released Nov 1980, it was re-released by DFA Records in an expanded version in 2007 that you can stream below. Read more »

In 2008, I got my hand's on Pylon 's Gyrate LP for the first time. As a big B-52's fan, I was pretty blown away by the New Wave, art-rock on display and heard how big an influence Pylon had on Fred Schneider and co. (not to mention the rest of Athens, GA). I (obviously) still spin the record to get my dance-pop kick, so I was pleased to learn of the new single DFA put out : a double-a-side cover by Deerhunter and remix from Calvinist. Both are natch and [...]
![[Listen] Sleigh Bells' Alexis Krauss & Deerhunter Cover Pylon](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3557796_lg.jpg)
Take a listen to some covers from Deerhunter and Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells on this glorious Thursday. Why so glorious? Because tomorrow is Friday and that's always a good thing. The covers that have been tackled here are Georgia underground legends Pylon's "Cool" which Deerhunter nail and then not just that but a Calvanist remix of the Pylon track "Yo Yo". The show stealer for me though is the vocals which have been laid down by Alexis Krauss from Sleigh Bells. The "Yo-Yo (Calvinist Remix)" will be available as the B-Side to a limited-edition [...]

Photo by Philip Cosores Last week, Deerhunter's cover of Pylon's "Cool" surfaced on the internet, and now, we have more from the DFA single of a Pylon cover and remix. Sasha Frere-Jones' Calvinist remixes the Pylon track "Yo-Yo," but it is really vocalist Alexis Krauss from Sleigh Bells who steals the show. Check out all the aforementioned tracks below, including two takes on "Yo-Yo." Enjoy. Pylon - Cover + Remix by DFA Records (Via Stereogum )
Last week, we brought you a cover of Pylon's classic "Cool" as covered by Deerhunter, and mentioned that Sleigh Bells' Alexis Krauss would be covering "Yo-Yo" (twice!) by Pylon with help from Sasha Frere-Jones' Calvinist. Well, here are those covers, embedded below. The Calvinist Remix of "Yo-Yo" is especially entrancing, since we hear Krauss vamp and coo over a sparse electro beat. She can do something other than scream like a banshee over blown-out beats. The other remix ("Calvinist Unsaved Mix") is heavier on the vocals, but lighter on the cool factor. Listen below. This single is out now via [...]

Music Critic (and, full disclosure, associate) Sasha Frere-Jones remixed Georgia underground legends Pylon's "Yo-Yo" twice by adding a number of new elements, including vocals by Sleigh Bells frontwoman Alexis Krauss. His "Yo-Yo (Calvinist Saved Remix)" will be available as the B-Side of a limited-edition 73 that finds longtime/outspoken Pylon fans Deerhunter covering the band's 1980 single "Cool" on side A. Stream the whole thing, including "Yo-Yo (The Calvinist Unsaved Remix)," which I'm guessing is for the digital version of the release: Read More...
