Looking forward to the new A Tribe Called Kanye record! But in all seriousness, Kanye West signed Tribe maestro Q-Tip to his G.O.O.D. Music label and immediately announced an album coming early next year entitled ... read more »

Longtime collaborators Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes teamed up for one of the iller slept-on singles of the 2000s in "For The Nasty", a track that, for whatever reason, never made its way onto an album. Instead, it lived as a single released by Motown in 2005. That didn't stop producer Freddie Joachim from diggin' Â up the somewhat-hype track and turning it into a jazzy, laid-back burner. You can check out his remix below. It's a winner.

Adi Dick's re-lick of Erykah Badu's 'On & On' from earlier this month seems to have hit the spot for readers of this site, and a few more to boot. 17,000 plays and counting on the old Soundcloud doesn't lie. So to sign off on what has been a strong month of music from all comers, here's another tidy remix ting from Adi. Q-Tip gets the once over today, with Adi throwing 'Breathe & Stop' up on some blocks and stripping it back to basics. The end result [...]

Beats Rhymes and Life Micheal Rapaport was a multi-talented hollywood actor that I’d seen before but never really connected with. “was” is the keyword, because now the former statement is no longer true. I say that because he made his directorial debut with, the incredible documentary, Beats Rhymes and Life . The documentary spans over decades but is a result of a 2 year project that involved following the band that is no longer a band: A Tribe Called Quest . Now, if you’ve heard about this film before than we applaud [...]
Here are some visuals for Roc Marciano's banger of a single, " Emeralds ". Oh, and the other news? Well, there is some good news, and there is some bad news. First the bad news. Roc Marciano has pushed back his forthcoming album Reloaded to the summer. The good news, Q-Tip is going to executive producer the project. Yeah, we can live with that. [ via / via ]
Esperanza Spalding comes into this already boasting an impressive resume: flinty jazz bassist, carmel-voiced chanteuse, Grammy sensation. With Radio Music Society, she clearly hopes to add another line: Pop star. Far more accessible than 20102s somewhat stuffy flipside release Chamber Music Society, this new effort stirs elements of neo-soul (the lead single, "Black Gold"), Tin Pan Alley ("Hold On Me"), [...]

When it rains, it pours. For weeks - sometimes months - I go through mix tape droughts, and then all of a sudden I'm surrounded in quality download material that cripples my internet download speed to Stephen Fry tantrum-inducing levels . Following on from the blinding Kenny Dope Hip Hop & Funk 45s mix from a couple of days back, and the Big K.R.I.T jammy from the day before that, is another beauty from NYC jazz man Robert Glasper (who you might remember from last month's [...]

Taking a cue from The Black Kevin Arnold and his Late Night Snacks , I figured I'd drop this gem from Kamaal's second album, The Renaissance . The song features everyone's favorite " Don't Know Why " singer, and is a great midtempo for some easy listening. On another note, it's such a shame this album went so ignored since it was a nice departure from the club-ready tracks he packed on to his solo debut. This release is a definite must have in your collection. Check out "Life [...]

In celebration of Black Fist Friday, Q-tip hops on the 1's and 2's at radio station Hot 97 last week to drop this throwback mix...
After hearing Pete Rock, Questlove , and DJ Premier hop on the turntables to bless Hot97 with one hour DJ sets, Q-Tip was next up to bat on Black Fist Friday. Spinning through all sorts of hip-hop classics, it is rare you hear this level of music on the radio. What a great way to start the weekend. [ via ]

OH MY GOD! The Standard -- which is a group consisting of Common and Q-Tip -- might be adding Mr. Nasir Jones to the mix. It's like The Avengers adding Thor. I mean, my god, I hope this happens. Obviously, we know Nas and Q-Tip worked together on "One Love" and Common and Nas released "Ghetto Dreams" a few months back. Common and Q-Tip formed The Standard in 2007 even though they haven't released any music ... yet. If this happens, my head might explode. I'll keep ya'll updated as I get updated. via [ XXL [...]
As one of the earlier forms of electronic music, and originating in the garages of the UK underworld, garage music has changed immensely since its beginnings. The genre that helped to inspire a musical revolution that has thus been modernized and re-dubbed "Future Garage", at the fore front of this musical resurgence are artists such as SBTRKT , Joker and the teenage brother duo known as Disclosure . Disclosure, pulls elements of dubstep, tech/house and their original UK garage influences to take on a new sound entirely. The young group has been touring with SBTRKT recently [...]

Phife Dawg recently spoke with the Montreal Gazette about a possible Tribe reunion. The good news is Phife wants to do a tour and he knows the fans do as well. The bad news is scheduling may be tough. It's days like these that make me wish I born a few years earlier so I could've seen them when they toured regularly. Shit, I'd spend my life savings to attend a Tribe concert. Anyway, here's the copy of the interview: “We’ve got to take it one day at a time,” the rapper said, regarding [...]

I just finished watching the Michael Rapaport-directed Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest . Like a lot of folks around my age (early 402s - same age as Rapaport & the Tribe), I spent a lot of quality time back in the day with A Tribe Called Quest . In my case, it was the first two albums that really resonated with me - particularly 19912s The Low End Theory . Songs like "Excursions",  "Can I Kick It", and "Rhythm (Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts)" helped provide a [...]
What!!!!! I know I knock new Hip Hop, but people like Tip are unique....

From his work with the Soulquarians collective, to Donuts, his instrumental album which dropped three days before his death, Jay Dee aka James Yancey aka J Dilla created a sound that was often imitated, but never duplicated. His genius transcended production, and he will undoubtedly go down as one of Hip-Hop’s greatest musicians ever. Dilla had a knack for creating entire beats around obscure samples that [...]

Today is the day known as Dilla Day. The day to celebrate James DeWitt Yancey, known as John Doe, MC Silk, Jay Dee, or most commonly J Dilla, and all he has done for music. Below me and another iLS writer, Nikko, have put together some of, but not all, our favorite tracks with Dilla. If you feel there are any crucial tracks missing hit us up in the comments below and we'll add them. Anyway, iLS wishes you a happy Dilla Day, we just want you all to relax and chill out to some tunes celebrating the day of [...]
