Fastbird has three upcoming shows. The above is a flier for their show September 13th at The Charleston in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, USA. If you are in Portland, Oregon you can catch them at Kelly's Olympian on Saturday. And August 26th they will be playing at Glasslands which is again in Williamsburg. Here are some songs by Fastbird. The Guardian surveys a raft of new folk (Loudon Wainwright III, Noah and the Whale) and issues a general "meh", but they like the new Joan Baez the best. The album, "Day After Tomorrow", carries the name of its Tom Waits cover. Trolling the Live Music Archive, scrolling through page after page of Disco Biscuits concert upload, has its benefits. I unearthed a few new show uploads with some

Mates Of State - Now The Brooke - Born On A Train (cover) Quasi - I Never Want To See You Again Fireflies - The Sky Turns Black BMX Bandits - Serious Drugs

Quite possibly the greatest music site on the mighty interweband home to occasional Merc contributor Sean Moeller Daytrotter has just posted a great set from local duo-now-trio, Quasi . The session includes one older track, "Seven Years Gone" from 2003's Hot Shit , plus three brand new unreleased jams as well. Our favorite is below, and despite it's title ("Bye Bye Blackbird"), I don't believe it is about the former Portland venue. MP3: Quasi - Bye Bye Blackbird [...]

Life is dull, life is grey, At its best it's just OK. But I'm happy to report - Life is also short. You can't hope for a better introduction to a song about stifling, overstimulated, homogenised modern ennui. You might be depressed, says California , but at least you don't SUCK. It might not be the world's most convincing argument, but it is a fantastic alt.singalong for everyone horrified at what passes for modern life. Check out the authentically sun-drenched overloaded 1960s musical palette of this track from their album Featuring Birds . [...]

So this is the moment I've been waiting for all week. Friday. The day. The last day. Time to go cash my 'lil check and hop on over to Beermart(not the actual name of the store, but it sounds better than Liquor Pump, no...huh...why am I writing all this stuff in parentheses?). You get the idea. There's something about Beer on Fridays. It's match made in heaven...or maybe Germany. It's a night where the weekends just begun and you can drink to your hearts content(or limit) while watching some sports event. [...]

Quasi was the first band to be featured on either/or, nearly a year ago. That alone wouldn't be enough for me to post about them again; rather, they are an exceedingly awesome band (from Portland, of course), and while I have heard some complaints about the "whiny" vocals, the lyrics are just way too damn good to pass up. But before I start spewing out a bunch of their more memorable lyrics, I should probably talk about the band themselves. There's singer Sam Coomes, formerly of the band Heatmiser, who jams out on what is essentially a keyboard; when [...]

As you will have guessed from the slightly irregular posting over the last couple of weeks, I'm now back teaching and not having the time to post every day. It doesn't mean that I have given up on the blog, or indeed music. Having been given a new Ipod a couple of months back, and spent a lot of time downloading stuff onto it, I'm quite frequently re-familiarising myself with stuff I had downloaded, and sometimes almost forgotten about. A case in point would be these four tracks from Quasi . [...]

It's a bit early this year, but I wanted to get started on my end of the year music lists so that I wouldn't obsess and ruminate over them endlessly and wind up posting them in January when 1) it will be impossible not to be influenced at least somewhat by everyone else's lists and 2) all of you will be so sick of year-end lists anyway. Also, December gets quite busy for me very soon - between work, life, and having a baby due next month, there won't be a whole lot of free time left for making these [...]
