Frank Yang The baseline for any Fucked Up show is glorious mayhem. Add in factors like a hometown show, a full-album recital of their ridiculously ambitious and critically-acclaimed, concept rock opera David Comes To Life , the last gig of an insanely busy year in support of said album that took the band around the world from bars to festivals to arenas, a fundraising benefit for Barriere Lake Solidarity , and a lineup made up of some of the band's favourite acts from Toronto (and outlying regions), and expectations [...]

Montreal's equivalent to South by Southwest, Pop Montreal will see 600 acts playing over 50 venues across the city between September 21st and 25th. And because it's the festival's 10th anniversary, one of those 600 acts will be the band formerly known as Shark Attack! , who will play a *free* outdoor show at the place des Festivals of Quartier des Spectacles. The rest of the bill includes names like Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Chromeo, Peter Hook, The Raincoats, Liam Finn, Yuck, Japandroids, Girls, tUnE-yArDs, Bass Drum of Death, Liturgy, Moonface, Purity Ring, and [...]

Toronto - Four Corners is a pretty interesting concept for a concert. There is no stage. There are no opening acts or headliners. Instead, there are four bands, each set up in one corner of the room and taking turns every couple of songs, culminating in all four bands jamming together. For this, the second edition, the bands involved were Lullabye Arkestra , Quest For Fire , Sun Ra Ra Ra , and Rituals . Rituals were up first and I've got to say they didn't really make much of an impression on me at all. [...]

I'm still in recovery mode after my weird sickness bug this weekend, so I'm going to make this quick. I'm feeling a little bit better, thanks for asking. I spiked a bit of a fever last night but slept for almost 10 hours, and today just battled some sporadic chills and fatigue. I think I'll live. If I don't, oh well! It was fun while it lasted, right? Go read some other creep's blog. Happy birthday, mom. I hope you enjoyed your squirrel's paw earrings, made out of 100% pure squirrel's paw! You're gonna be the talk of [...]

According to singer/guitarist Chad Ross, this latest release is a "heavy meeting of all the music we love ... pounding psych straight from the Canadian heart". Clearly, "all the music they love" is a reference to the players' wide array of musical backgrounds (Ross and guitarist Andrew Gunn were once part of indie rockers The Deadly Snakes whilst drummer Mike Maxymuik thrashed it up with metalcore's Cursed); a fact that has shaped the band's mind-blowingly varied output as they delve into the realms of stoner rock; and a fact that has enabled Toronto's Quest For Fire to quickly [...]

Quest for Fire's Lights from Paradise is not your typical set of stoned, sludge rock from Tee Pee Records. A wide pallete of influences which touches Pink Floyd (Guitar/Vocalist Chad Ross is a ringer for David Gilmour), '90s British psychedelic rock, as well as the expected, proto-metal riff-rock lays the foundation. The band's measured pace and expert control of dynamics ensures it. For example, a track like "Set Out Alone," may have the giant guitars the heshers crave, but listen closely, and you'll hear an agile rhtyhm section, one which is practically danceable in the face of the tracks's overt heaviness. [...]
At this point the critical reader will certainly offer an objection. "You have been inviting me," he will say, "to do nothing more or less than trust my senses: and this too on the authority of those impracticable dreamers the poets. Now it is notorious that our senses deceive us. Every one knows that; [...]

Chief among this decade's crop of primal burn psych metal prowlers that have struck a chord with RSTB are the epic structures of Naam and Ancestors, the brutal live incantations of Earthless and now; after their second LP lands, the smoke-ringed crawl of Quest for Fire. Maybe its because the band spawned out of garage roots (members formerly played in The Deadly Snakes), maybe its because they've gleaned a few lessons from Stephen McBean's psych prowess (two members played in a live version of Pink Mountaintops) or maybe its because the band have a way of injecting the malleable headspace [...]
Quest for Fire's Chad Ross: "Wide open spaces of dreamy hard rock, quiet sweet moments, and pounding psych straight from the Canadian heart." Toronto's hard-hitting, scuzz fuzz, psych band, Quest for Fire, are releasing their eagerly awaited sophomore album August 31st and we've got the premiere today of "Set Out Alone", the ideal encapsulation of their sound. Quest for Fire emerged from the remains of two previous bands, the Deadly Snakes and Cursed, and released their self-titled debut last year. Vocalist and guitarist Chad Ross describes the musical vision for Lights from Paradise as "a heavy meeting of...

Toronto psych rockers Quest For Fire will release their new LP, Lights From Paradise , through Tee Pee Records on August 31st. It's the band's follow-up to their self-titled debut. The album is said to consist of "beautiful, dreamy hard rock, Spaceman 3 drone and psychedelic swirl." Has me sold. I did a write up on their song "Bison Eyes" some time ago, but the post mysteriously disappeared from this site. It was featured, so it goes without saying that I dug it. The band most recently released a split 7" with Nebula . [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours A psychedelic rock band in the tradition of the 13th Floor Elevators, Quest for Fire is an amalgamation of four members with ties to influential garage and metal bands of the past. Their trippy, long-form songs and solo-based jams evoke memories of classic underground blues-rock from the '70s. The Toronto-based quartet will be appearing at this year's SXSW festival in Austin, Texas before hitting the road with label mates Nebula. Spinner spoke to Quest for Fire guitarist and [...]

The band will be playing with Tee Pee Records labelmates Quest For Fire on the first leg of the tour and The Willowz and Lionize will support Nebula on the second leg of the tour. The tour includes a stop at SXSW [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada After a 10-year reign as darlings of Canada's indie scene, garage-rockers Deadly Snakes made the abrupt decision in 2006 to call it quits. While breaking up was no doubt challenging for the legendary Toronto collective, it appears that staying apart has actually been the real struggle. "It was very clear at the end that we shouldn't be a band anymore," says drummer Andrew Gunn, speaking to Spinner outside of Portland, Ore.'s East End bar. "We never expected to [...]
