I didn't have a Finally Friday last week because we were sweating it out at Coachella 2009 , so I'll try to make up for that this week. There is still more to come on Coachella too: Airborne Toxic Event, We Are Scientists, Franz Ferdinand, and Morrissey. Check out our Day in Photos . We're experimenting with some font changes here. I like the slightly smaller size and the tighter paragraphs. The current colors will probably not remain, however, I want to do something that makes the links more visible. Suggestions? [...]

Seems it's that time of year when there's so much new music being released by new bands as well as established ones. We start with the debut studio album by Hill Country Revue, Make A Move, 10 tracks of raw blues and classic southern rock recorded at Jim Dickinson's famed Zebra Ranch Studio as well as at Young Avenue Sound in Memphis. The band features a great combination of musicians, and will touring extensively through September. The album will be released May 12th. mp3: Alice Mae [...]

friends of captains dead, tee pee records keep bringin the good stuff. they recently signed toronto noise makers quest for fire to their ever expanding roster. quest for fire is made up of a of ex-members of acts including cursed, no no zero, the deadly snakes and nordic nomadic. they have opened up for the likes of black mountain, ladyhawk, mudhoney, earthless, howlin rain and witch. havent heard the record as of yet, but you will probably dig this if you like any of the above mentioned bands. their self titled debut is set to drop [...]
Quest For Fire is a group of Canadian cave bears pawing at motorized garage-metal riffs and ghost-in-the-machine vocals; anyone who's ever subsisted on a steady listening diet of Mudhoney, Queens Of The Stone Age and Fu Manchu will feel awfully cozy with "Bison Eyes." (Note to members of this population: Please give up your weed [...]

Toronto's Quest For Fire have signed with Tee Pee Records and will release their self titled debut on June 9th. We are leaking the lead track Bison Eyes for your listening pleasure: PROMOTIONAL MP3: BISON EYES - QUEST FOR FIRE You would think that playing in bands for a decade, and touring constantly in shitty vans, might instill the desire to make your new project a lucrative one. This however, hasn't crossed the minds of the four members of Toronto's Quest For Fire. The sonic assault that these guys unleash onto unsuspecting [...]
I have long lamented in these electronic pages the lack of good old fashioned powerful rock music. I have missed the anti-star rock shredding of Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr., The Breeders, early Nirvana, even the first Smashing Pumpkins album, Gish. During the mid-90's when rock went to hell in a hand basket courtesy of idiots like [...]

Caleb Buyers Let's be honest, there's not a lot of reason for there to be a Carl Newman solo record. The man is the chief songwriter in The New Pornographers , an outfit that turns out material at a pretty decent rate all things considered, and it's not as though he has a metal jones to itch that wouldn't work in the context of the Pornographers - when he puts on the AC Newman hat, he's still the consummate popsmith. But the whys and wherefores are his business - for the rest of us, [...]

For several personal reasons, 2008 is not a year that I will be looking back on with a great deal of fondness. There's been high points for sure, but the low points are ones that I hope I'll never need to experience again. On a much more superficial level however, there was a lot of good accomplished in double-oh-eight, and the world of interesting music cranked out a lot of good, while the world of popular music, once again, cranked out a lot of bad. As per usual in the world of bloggers, snobs and elitists, a few [...]
posted by Matt: Seems like the clocks have reset in Toronto, and a new crop of amazing bands are starting to show up. Far from any kind of fashion rock, this stuff bares a grittier, more lo-fi asthetic. The last act I posted on that tied into this was $100, now I've stumbled across Quest For Fire. They played at Sappyfest this year and I heard nothing but good things, but wasn't able to make it to Sackville. This one video is enough to sell it though, part Elevator, part Jesus & The Mary Chain...and maybe a little [...]

Admittedly I didn't put a lot of thought into what I was doing when I picked up tickets to see Mudhoney at The Horseshoe on Friday night. My reasoning was all like, "Mudhoney is soooo awesome and I can't wait to see them rock out and stuff cuz I loved them when I was 19 and junk!" The thing is that it completely slipped my mind that I'm not 19 anymore. Shoulda thought about that. The show reminded me pretty fast of my fragile tender age, but apparently I was the only one. As the crowds started closing [...]

As impressed as I was seeing Quest For Fire open for Eric's Trip at The Mod Club earlier this year , nothing could prepare me for the experience of listening to their self titled debut. The members of this band together as a unit may be new, but the long time experience of its collective members shines brightly on this outstanding disc. I'm willing to admit that I can be quite the fanboy of exaggeration. I've declared many bands to be my "new favourite" and I throw around terms such as "it's been [...]

When I walked off the airplane, right onto the tarmac just like a Beatle, the air was like warm honey. Thick and sweet, it took more effort to breathe than I was used to. The sun was setting behind me, where I'd just left, and by the time I made it through the terminal I was immersed in that special slow darkening of the Prairies in the summer. In late June, if you're out on the flatlands in the middle of the night, look north and you'll see just the faintest glow of the sun, barely dipped below the horizon [...]

Finally getting to see Eric's Trip was like a dream come true to me. As far as I'm concerned, they're one of the seminal bands of the 90's, and it's a shame that they never entirely got the recognition that they deserved. They always seemed to be the band that was highly respected, yet never quite able to reach much more than a cult status. Oddly enough, I ran into Rick White a couple of weeks ago. He was painting a wall on Queen Street. Very random. It turned out that this wall was [...]
Prior to this night I had written that not many concerts are worthy of a 5 hr drive through a snow storm. This one may not of been that extreme, but it was definitely worth the 3.5 hr early morning drive through occasional white-out conditions (which includes an extra 20 minutes going the wrong way in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, QC at 2 am). But I'm getting in front of myself. Flatlander and I knew of an ensuing storm, but decided to head north with the understanding that we'd leave the venue at 12:30 am no matter what (storm was supposed to roll in [...]
