A while back I asked followers of the Quick Before It Melts Facebook Page if they'd be interested in a monthly mixtape. The response was an overwhelming yes. Okay, it was only about eight people, but still, I take that as a good sign. I know I've tried experiments like this before but maybe this time it will stick. No pressure to have it out on any particular day of the month, or to follow any kind of special theme (although this one does). It won;t be on SoundCloud, or on YouTube, or anywhere else; if you want [...]

Here is part two of counting down the singles and music videos of 2011. This time it is counting down from #30 to #11. Most of the singles are compiled from the Singles Chart on my site. There will be some songs that wasn't on the chart but are worthy to be noticed. Check it out. 30. Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks [...]
So this is weird. I was out of the house all day yesterday, and when I got home I was too beat to sit down and write today's post. I figured after a good night's sleep I'd be able to get up and write it in the morning. So i did just that, but when I sat down to start writing, I found a draft post with nothing but the title "Sell out while you can" scheduled for today. The only problem-for the life of me I couldn't remember who or what I was planning on [...]

Vancouver's Diamond Dancer is a collective of long-time friends whose past is checkered with forays into hardcore punk and a present full of shimmering guitar hooks and shoegaze overtones. They've recently released a five-song EP called Will You? , to which I answer, "Yes, I most definitely will." The three piece classifies their time as members of bands Jakartah and American Geography as "dysfunctional", but from the sounds of things, Diamond Dancer is well on the way to recovery. "the track I've posted below, "Long Distance Relationships Rarely Work Out" is an [...]

September 27 is gearing up to be a busy day for music buyers: Dan Mangan's Oh Fortune is out that day, as is Metal Meets , the third full length from Ohbijou . Interview Magazine premiered the first single, "Niagara" last week, and while it's not an immediate attention grabber, I do like the direction Ohbijou's sound seem to be heading in. The contrast between heavy guitars and Casey Mecija's voice is pretty cool, and it's not something they've explored to quite this extent in the past. [...]
Maybe it's all the sunshine and bright skies from this past week, but I've been feeling very upbeat, almost jubilant, as of late. Now, lest you start thinking I'm bipolar and suffering from violent mood swings (because of this post from June) let it be known that my mental fortitude is as solid as granite. Yet, even the dourest of disposition can't stand the dual-attack charms of summer and good music, so along with all this sunshine, I've been indulging in some fine aural pleasures, like St. Catharines' Talk In Blue . [...]

Happy 144th Birthday, Canada. The QBiM tradition of a homegrown party soundtrack continues with the latest edition of RADiO QBiM. May 31, 2011 marks the end of another Polaris Music Prize voting year. I'm finalizing my ballot for this year's long list, and decided that instead of a boring sequence of posts about what I'm considering, I'd use the opportunity for another episode of RADiO QBiM to give you a taste of what I'm thinking. (cover star: Katie Stelmanis of Austra ) tracklisting: 01 Austra "Beat And The Pulse" 02 Destroyer "Chinatown" [...]

...and it's back! RADiO QBiM had to retreat and gather the troops for a bit in order to get our house in order, and we couldn't think of a better way to make a return than to have Daniel Romano give a guided tour of his top 10 favourite songs of all time. You might recall in my last post about Romano that I mentioned his new album Sleep Beneath the Willow reminded me of the now-defunct CHOW AM country music station from Welland (and if you don't [...]

Someone once suggested to me I make a Quick Before It Melts podcast collecting some of the best stuff from the blog and put it all together into an easy-to-use, easy-to-love one-stop-pod-rockin' download. So, as September is traditionally the month where networks re-invent themselves and start with a new broadcast year, so too will I wade into the milieu with my very own pilot episode of RADiO QBiM . There's no format, no theme, no commentary (thank God), no filler, just killer tunes. It's only available here (for now), but if response is good, then maybe RADiO [...]

(image: Tara Smith) Early last week, when it came to my attention that I'd soon be reaching Quick Before it Melts ' 800th post, I got to thinking about the past three years and what it's all amounted to. Judging from the posts I’ve logged on an (almost) daily basis it seems that I have an awful lot to say about, but oddly enough, faced with this milestone, I find myself oddly at a loss for words. I've said it before, and I've said it this week already, that I love writing this [...]

Fellow bloggers are starting their year end lists and here's one that features multimedia (from a site that needs to update their link for us as "Broken Dial" is a deadzor name) [ QBIM ] I was very excited to see Chris DeLine's Top 10 Videos of 2008 list until I realized that one of the videos features a lot of naked donger [ Culture Bully ] This entry into their Top 100 Albums of the Decade list features one of my personal faves, Postal [...]

Over the past week, music bloggers using Google's Blogger.com have been complaining that their posts are being removed without their consent. While Blogger allows users to quickly toss up a site, seasoned writers often graduate to a more robust software package such WordPress. It seems as though this recent censorship is convincing more and more Blogger users to jump ship. This week, veteran music bloggers, Quick Before it Melts and The Music Slut have made the jump, not only to WordPress, but to their own domain names. (congrats to them) With Blogger [...]
