photo credit: David McClister Reptar - Orifice Origami The Athens, GA based foursome Reptar has been described as a 'synth-based pop', 'electro funk,' and 'experimental dance' band. But none of these seem to do the band's sound justice. In live festival performances, the band throws tamborines across the stage and band members dance in short jean shorts and full-body spandex suits. Their music videos feature talking lips, lazer beams and varieties of fruit. But the one element that comes through whether you're seeing the band at a festival, watching a [...]

Reptar - Orifice Origami Athens, Georgia based quartet Reptar is dropping by Boston tonight, playing at the Great Scott. The group, which combines danceable beats with african music and quickfire lyrics, has their debut album, Body Faucet, coming out May 1st. If you search Reptar on YouTube, you'll find a variety of live performances featuring flying tamborines, blue spandex body suits, short jean shorts and lots and lots of dancing. What more can you ask for in a live show? Fellow Athens, Georgia wierdo pop band Quiet Hooves are set to play [...]

Athens, GA native act Reptar is on the verge of exploding on to the indie rock scene, with a much-anticipated full length, Body Faucet , due out in the beginning of May. The band is currently on the road promoting the album, and on Monday, they brought their talents to Milwaukee, WI. Despite living in Milwaukee for over two years now, I had never been to The Cactus Club, despite always hearing of its appeal. The venue lived up to all of the hype, basically made up of two rooms, a bar and a stage (each [...]

Photo by David McClister Tonight! Athens' own pysch-pop extravaganza Reptar will be at the 7th Street Entry with city mates Quiet Hooves to provide you with a Tuesday night dance party. MFR spoke with Andrew McFarland (drums) of Reptar to talk about touring, the debut album, and how Athens, GA recently beat out Minneapolis as the number one music scene in the US (of course we asked him about that!). Read the full interview below and go see the show tonight! You've had the [...]
...and so we continue. Again writing from the starbucks in Athens at College and Broad. Played my first quiet hooves show last night! I didnt really know the notes, or like, the keys or the song names, just kinda how the songs go, so it was a little rough musically, but I did my best to make up for it with pure rocking out. I was on congas for a few songs, so that is easy to rock out on. I think I've got a good look right now, mid-fro and mid-beard, makes the crowd [...]

photo by Lauren Slusher Can you believe it's nearly March already? On Wednesday, Anna Coogan, Sam Russell, and Joy Mills are all at Columbia City Theater. Thursday night, SOJA, Trevor Hall, and Anuhea are at Showbox at the Market, Nobunny, Tacocat, Dude York are at Rendezvous, and Cold War Kids start the first of their three [...]
Reptar + Quiet Hooves performing at The Saint on February 22, 2012
Saddle Up , the out-pop debut of Athens, GA's Quiet Hooves combines orchestral textures with jazz rock rhythms, ragtime melodies with baroque and psychedelic pop song structures, resulting in a Vaudevillian pastiche a la Van Dyke Parks's Song Cycle . In a throwback to assembly line record production, singer/songwriter Julian Bozeman handed the tracks over to Javier Morales, who over arranged, recorded, produced and engineered each, alone in his bedroom on a Tascam MKII cassette recorder. Fitting, as the 12 piece live band has recently returned from four nights of support on R. Stevie Moore [...]
Its the end of the weekend...sad I know, but I'm feeling a bit inspired for the coming week (we'll see a about that on Monday morning). Recently music has been booming, I've... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

2010 was a dull year for discovering new bands; caught between over hype and under hype, the ripe atmosphere for discovery is quickly diminishing. The Cults signed to Columbia Records, Tennis played their first New York show at the large capacity Terminal 5, Blackberry got maximum coverage out of a Tune Yards song, Best Coast and Wavves annoyed the half of us with their money-friendly philosophy on selling out. So I stuck to, for the most part, old favorites who made great new releases. As far as releases go, that Future Islands put out their first proper full length, and [...]

If Todd P. and Babycastles rent a space on 42nd Street just past 3rd Avenue and set up a video arcade and a free, all ages DIY venue, it's going to be exactly like Monster Island and Market Hotel and Ms. Bea's, just...in Manhattan. Right? I was pretty surprised on Friday night to find out that that assumption isn't true. In fact, what Todd P. has done in his new pop up gallery is actually pretty brilliant. For the first time in a really long time, I heard conversations between kids there for the show where many of them actually [...]

I posted about Showpaper's 42nd Street Gallery about two weeks ago, but it's definitely worth mentioning again. If you haven't been yet, you should definitely go test out all the video games and check out the really neat art. Plus, Athens, Georgia's Quiet Hooves are playing their second of two New York shows this week. This band is orchestral and big and fun and pretty. They're great, and are a perfect Friday night band. Athens, Ga.'s Quiet Hooves release their sophomore album Saddle Up Athens, Ga.'s Quiet hooves is a 12-piece minimal pop band led by songwriter Julian Bozeman, who released their debut album to national acclaim last year. The songs from their second album Saddle Up are lent the producer / arranger treatment by Javier Morales of Quiet Hooves and The Dream Scene. For this recording Quiet Hooves pink-slips the whole band and strips the song to the voice alone. Julian sings the song and Javier arranges, records, performs, and bounces each piece [...]
Quiet Hooves' "Saddle Up" may just be the bridge to a more listenable, relatable and yet still spasmodic album in the future. Imagine Spencer Krug, the man behind weirdo rockers Sunset Rubdown and Wolf Parade, as a teenager in Canada. I can picture him sitting around with his guitar and a keyboard, his head so full of musical ideas that he can barely contain them all within his cranium. I'm no Krug expert. Maybe he came out of the womb writing incredible songs like "Stadium and Shrines II" and "This Heart's On Fire," but I'm guessing he wrote a whole lot of songs, which were probably also pretty good, before he even got to his current bands. I imagine Krug's [...]

I'll admit that I'm sitting in the spare bedroom of my parents' house trying to quietly type this, and that I don't have headphones and can't listen to music too loudly and can't honestly really remember what these two bands sound like. BUT, I wrote this post about them a few weeks ago, and I remember being so pumped up by Quiet Hooves, that I'll recommend both these bands again tomorrow at The Knitting Factory. If being off of work and BBQing just gets to be too much, I'd definitely head over to Williamsburg for this show. It's [...]

I was going to recommend the Cloud Nothings/Fluffy Lumbers show at Monster Island Basement, but decided to go with this show on a recommendation from a friend. What's the point of only writing about the same bands all the time? Time for some new blood. Total Slacker we already know and love, but Quiet Hooves is a neato little band coming out of Athens, Georgia. I've only listened to the songs on their MySpace , but am already thoroughly intrigued. They're definitely not for you if you're just looking for something easy and breezy to put on, but they [...]
