Quixotic

Quixotic is a Hungarian producer who's been kicking around various music scenes for a few years now but has recently turned his hand towards the worlds of Nu-Disco, SynthWave and Italo. And we're glad he did. There's a few tracks over on his SoundCloud page worth your attention, but here are a few that capture his style. That style being big, thick, retro Italo basslines awash with rich Nu-Disco grooves. 'Étoiles' is the big stand out for me, it's a massive slice of Italo flavoured Cosmic Disco which is driven by a pounding bassline and razor sharp [...]

TOUR DATES: Steve Kimock & Friends @ Quixote's, Brooklyn Bowl

Longtime readers already know that I've got a sweet spot in my heart (er, ears) for Steve Kimock. That's especially true when Steve - in one of his many and varied musical projects - links up with funky-ass bassman, Bobby Vega. I documented one of my favorite Kimock & Vega projects a while back with [...]

Terry Gilliam and the Curse of Quixote

"In 2000, Gilliam set out to realize his long-cherished vision of a freely adapted version of Don Quixote, titled The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, starring Johnny Depp as a time traveler from the 21st Century who meets up with Quixote,. Despite the complexity of the project, Gilliam was restricted to a bare-bones budget. During the first few days of filming, things began to go horribly awry. The situation only got worse from there, and like Orson Welles before him, Gilliam was unable to bring Don Quixote to the screen. He called it the "curse of Quixote." [...]

Bad Weather California – 5.14.2010 @ Quixote's True Blue

Bad Weather California – 5.14.2010 @ Quixote's True Blue I was a bit curious to see an organ on the stage last night when I walked into the Bad Weather California soundcheck last night. Curiosity gave way to excitement when I discovered that Aaron Collins has joined the lineup! Aaron's organ fills are a perfect complement to the band's older material. The additional instrumentation allows Bad Weather California to tread new musical ground on fresh tunes like "About This Time" and (still untitled?) Latin and African jams. BWC continue their three-night residency with Akron/Family tonight (+ Widowers and Candy Claws) [...]

I Just Heard A Band That I Like: Yellow Fever

I Just Heard A Band That I Like: Yellow Fever Yellow Fever from Austin, Texas. Sometimes, I do listen to the promo CDs that arrive at my house. Ever since the Yellow Fever disc showed up a week or so ago, I've been curious about it. I think the reference to Young Marble Giants in the one-sheet helped. But usually those "If you like Mott the Hoople, you'll love Hot Maple" descriptors are a joke, not to mention way off base. And, yes, I'm a sucker for animals (Yellow Fever's album cover depicts two), but I also know that animals -- particularly [...]

The Abused and Neglected Finally Have Their Day: Orphan and Child Abuse at Black Cat

After a long and eventful weekend, which was taking a hearty toll on my constitution, there were few and far between things that could have drug me out of recovery and into a blustery Sunday evening. The Brooklyn concrete gritted band Orphan, however, was on that very short list. And with the promise of seeing [...]

QUIXOTE-"Self Titled"

QUIXOTE-"Self Titled" Quixote are a bunch of sneaky bastards. They begin their self-titled debut album with a stutter-stop indie-rock lick that sounds like so many other bands I can't even figure out what it's most like. Yet as that first song, "Annunaki," moves along, it picks up speed and keeps me reasonably interested, and then takes a left turn somewhere around Pink Floyd's "Animals" period. Yes, I'm interested, but still not surprised. Then comes "Hubris," which mixes acoustic/electric guitar and fiddle employing that same stuccato sound, only now making it sound country. What the hell are these guys [...]

The Daily Choice: The Coathangers - Stop Stomp Stompin'

I think somehow, in my transition from the NW to SF, I entered some sort of bizarre singularity and came out the other side an entirely different sort of music lover. In the past it's been recognized (please judge me now) that I stray from female musicians, not out of any grandiose disregard for the [...]

Concert Review: The Crossroads Music Festival, 9/6/08

Concert Review: The Crossroads Music Festival, 9/6/08 Crossroads Music Festival September 6, 2008 Better Than : Any Previous CMF By JASON HARPER Pound for pound, I had more fun at this past Saturday night's Crossroads Music Festival than I've had on any given night of the past three South by Southwests I've been to. Of course, one is a little local festival and one is a huge industry event, but the point is, I had more fun. I also saw much more spirited and amazingly diverse performances than I've seen probably any night out on the town [...]
