Ahhh, spring is here. So we head to the Continent for some of the best racing of the year. Its name has changed over the years, but the format has largely remained the same: fields of 40+ cars of varying classes (and relative speeds) going as fast as possible for irresponsible amounts of time on extremely long, dangerous tracks. Spa Francorchamps, the Nürburgring, Circuit de la Sarthe, Monza, all european locales known for high average speeds and hosting these prestigious 24 hour (or sometimes 1000km) events. After the jump is a collection of some of my favorite images from the [...]

Did you know that we are nearing THE VERY END OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION? Hmmm? And that the end of Western Civilization is going to happen because sometimes the President brings up race sometimes and is not congratulatory enough to football players who love Jesus? It's true, at least according to Tea Party favorite Rep. Steve King of Iowa. He took the time to explain all of this in a grandiose speech on the House floor last week. He started off his speech by explaining that President Obama "threw a wedge down" on issues of race by [...]

While most know Race Bannon of The Primeridian as just a rapper, only a few select individuals know he's also a beast on the beats. He's laced the likes of Pugs Atomz and Rashid Hadee (most notably "Coolest Dudes"), and today, per the recommendation of Hadee, he's unleashing his first beat tape: NASCAR Race Tracks . Get it? I know you see that synergy in the title. It's 14 of his most recent concoctions, so hit the jump to check them out. Drive slow fast, homie. [...]

Some great shots of Audi's R18 "E-Tron" Hybrid Le Mans Race Car. Terrible name aside, this thing looks insane. Rich Guy Hobbies In a few years when I have some sportscars lying around and some points on my license to give away, I’ll do my best to convince some buddies to join me for this absurdity. Plus I’ll need someone to help me through the god-forsaken drive across Ohio. Ariana Grande feat. Mac Miller - The Way Mariah Carey - Fantasy Lil Wayne feat. 2 Chainz - Rich as ****
Directed and Filmed by Dave Galaxie Man, this one is kinda complicated, so I'm going to pass the mic to Race and let him explain: After 3 tours in the United States military, Capt. Richard Phelix finds himself back home making the difficult task of adjusting to civilian life. Capt. Phelix, a 7 year EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Specialist has seen his share of near death encounters and watched first hand several members of his platoon lose their lives. One of the most dangerous jobs as a soldier, the stress and long term psychological [...]

The Atlantic's Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of a handful of writers/bloggers that I greatly admire and make an effort to read on a daily basis - he's that good. Yes, much of his writing is on race in America, but what makes him so good is that he's able to spin his writings on race to be nearly universal. Race is merely a subtext to a much larger canvas. This sums up his views on tackling race quite well: Writers who focus on race/gender/sexual orientation are often of [...]

Tomorrow in the Topanga Canyon / Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles, the first Ranch Party festival is going down. It's a great line up of bands and DJs that the expected crowd of 1,000+ are sure to love all day and all night. The Los Angeles Times' Pop & Hiss music blog featured a nice write up on the festival you can check out here . Along with an added charity fee, a portion of the proceeds from the festival will go to ranchkids.org, an organization that works with at risk and special needs youth. Here's [...]

Goldroom , the nom de tune of electro whiz Josh Legg, has been added to the bill for the Ranch Party , the one-day festival Saturday in Topanga Canyon that features 20-plus artists. The music starts at 2 p.m., and shuttles to the Ranch (a 15-minute trip) start at noon (there is no on-site parking). There is free parking next [...]

Yesterday during Bingo Night at the Greyhound Hotel in Melbourne, I had an interesting conversation with a friend about a topic I don't believe I'd ever touched on: What's a little racial humor among friends? Not so much the use of "nigger" and "nigga" as terms of endearment -- I'd already gone there several times before. (And once more: Considering the loaded meaning of the words coming from a white person, it's a privilege which I believe should be reserved for black people only, unless the white people happen to be [...]

Well, it took a bit longer than expected (losing your job in November and having a baby in January will disrupt the blog-writing process a bit), but Given and Taken in Ink's list for best albums of 2012 is finally here. This year, a handful of bands came out of nowhere and blew me away. I knew right away that debut albums from Drew Smith and The Rest would stand among the best releases of the year. They are joined by 28 other great albums, by artists well-known and obscure. I'm pleased that GTI's 2012 list is a [...]

Photos and words by Brittany Kalaj Margulieux El Ten Eleven apologized to the crowd for their anti-climactic mid-show soundcheck, but there was no need. Adoring fans were willingly cramped into the you-can-barely-breathe sold out Central SAPC space for the chance to hear the local duo El Ten Eleven live. Once the band started playing, the small room seemed to have some air flowing. The night opened with a raucous We Were Indians' set followed by a solid, but subdued performance by Races. [...]

The Ranch — a local music festival to be held on a 20-acre property in the Santa Monica Mountains near Topanga Canyon — will debut Saturday, March 2, with Kisses and RACES heading up a 15-band bill. It immediately captures and commands the attention of each and every one of the dance mechanisms in your body, and it never lets up. From start to finish Races incorporates the traditional Moombahcore formula here known for its thick basslines, dramatic buildups, a two-step pulse, and quick drum fills at 110BPM full of energy, trigger quick transitions to keep even the most ADHD person engaged, and a classy vocal as the acoustic icing on the cake!
