Here's how this went down: Community's Donald Glover launched a half-joking campaign last year to be the new Peter Parker, a role which ultimately went to Andrew Garfield. Then in the season two premiere of his NBC sitcom he showed up wearing Spider-Man pajamas and recognized not only the joke, but the Internet's push to get him the role. #donald4spiderman. Still, there were people that felt uncomfortable about the thought of Peter Parker being black, as if that somehow changes the fundamental spirit of the character. [...]
Our friend Jax intro'd us to this Los Angeles band back in April, but we're just now gettin' hip. Shoulda listened earlier, but that is neither here nor there. RACES (formerly known as Black Jesus) recently signed with Frenchkiss Records and will release their debut LP, Year of the Witch , this Fall. " Big Broom " starts off with crunchy, textured, driving guitars and then evolves into a sweeping, slow burning psych-pop gem. Races - Big Broom [...]

The LA based group, RACES (formerly Black Jesus) have just signed on with Frenchkiss Records , who will be releasing the band's debut LP this fall. In preparation for the ride to their debut, the band have just released a single that should probably win you over pretty quickly. There's somewhat of a distance at the opening of the track, but as the vocals enter with the thick bass line, you find yourself being sucked into the dense sound of the "Big Broom." Accompaniment of female vocals add a [...]
Faster than you can say "Maybe 'Black Jesus' isn't such a great band name," Los Angeles sextet Races are signing to Frenchkiss Records , the New York City-based imprint that has been home to bands such as Local Natives, the Dodos, the Hold Steady and Passion Pit. A formal announcement is expected today. With one 7-inch release to their credit — "Big Broom" (Jaxart Records), which we liked a lot — the indie-rockers recently completed a full-length album, "Year of the Witch," tentatively planned for a fall release. The sound fashioned [...]
From the depths of my reporter's notebook (yeah, I still carry one): ► Swervedriver's recent blast from the past at the Echoplex felt like a class reunion. Could've sworn I recognized two dozen faces from their great performance a couple years ago at Coachella. And it's not out of the question that Adam Franklin and mates could convene to make some new music, I hear. Bring it on. ► Beachwood Sparks played a backyard party over the weekend and allowed as [...]
Just watched the documentary on Ayrton Senna (great movie) and I'm really digging the whole F1 aesthetic. These images are from The Cahier Archive , a father and son team that has covered the Formula One Championship from the 1950s to the present. It's interesting to see how the sport has changed over the years but my favorite decade has to be the 80s . Check out the previous post on the Porsche 917 for more vintage racing goodness.
[In response to the inevitable questions I am asked at shows — What have you heard? What are you listening to? What's new? — today I embark on something called Random Dispatches ... the contents of my notebook, spilt.] ► Lavender Diamond's recent show at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts was a revelation, and not merely because we hadn't heard much from Lavender Diamond since singer Becky Stark and the band released "Imagine Our Love" in 2007. The [...]
[Happy birthday today to Rivers Cuomo ... Here's some June un-gloom:] Top stops on a Monday: ► Brendan Perry's "Ark," his first solo album in 11 years, is just out, and the ex-Dead Can Dance frontman (pictured) visits the El Rey Theatre supported by Cocteau Twins co-founder turned film composer Robin Guthrie . ► Florence + the Machine rocks the Greek Theatre, supported by Twin Shadow and Hanni El Khatib . ► The One AM Radio highlights the [...]
A WEEKEND AT SILVERLAKE JUBILEE The Silverlake Jubilee this year was quite the event: two days packed full of excellent musical talent, delicious food and drink, and friends old and new. After downing a Deschutes and watching Will Wiesenfeld change his pants in the green room I saw a little bit of LA fitness phenom SWEAT SPOT before walking down to catch the end of JAIL WEDDINGS . The mood on the street was buoyant, which was strange considering that the world was supposed to end [...]
The New Spider-Man Was Inspired by Donald Glover

Speed Girls: the Bugatti Queen
Hellé Nice was born as Helene Delangle near Chartres as daughter of a postmaster, moved to Paris as teenager, posed for naughty photographs sold to tourists, and soon became one of the most popular and best known dancing acts in Paris in the mid 1920s. She started racing through contacts with members of the French motorsport world, like Baron Philippe de Rothschild, and Le Mans winner Henri de Courcelles. Hellé Nice successfully competed in Grand Prix and set multiple speed records in the 1930s in Bugatti's and Alfa Romeo's. [...]
