That is a real picture (credit to Robert Gendler and Ryan Hannahoe). How. Bloody. Amazing. Is that? It's the Carina Nebula, also known as NGC 3372, spanning over 300 light-years; it's a veritable Supernova factory as well as one of our galaxy's largest star forming regions. The Carina Nebula is constantly churning with atomic life [...]
Whew, just made it in before midnight! Here's my list of favorites of 2010. It's been a helluva year, I'm very much looking forward to 2011 and what it might bring. It's all up from here, baby! In no particular order, they're all my favorites, and I've not got through most of anything past September. So apologies to all you wonderful musical folk who have sent me stuff. I'll slowly crawling out from under my rock. These few albums are very near and very dear to my heart. I couldn't have got through the year without them. [...]

I am actually in love with this band. My friend Chris who runs Broken Sound Music (the label who will incidentally be releasing Mariner's debut EP on November 1st) was really enthusiastic about these guys, and when I saw them live for the first time supporting TBW favourite Rachael Dadd at the weekend, I was absolutely gobsmacked. For once, I do believe Chris wasn't enthusiastic enough! This seven-piece foot-stomping folk orchestra are truly unlike anything else around at the moment; think something in the vein of an underground version of Mumford & Sons [...]

Winchester may not be a common topic of interest, or a particularly well known town outside the South of Britain, but nevertheless during the Y Generation boom of the 1980's it bore an alarming amount of talented musicians: amongst others, Frank Turner, This is the Kit, and lady of the moment Rachael Dadd all hail from the area. What devilry went on there during my childhood years is not known, but as Dadd's new studio release Elephee confirms, we should all be grateful for it. The EP begins with tall-tales of leather [...]

There's a purity about Rachael Dadd that makes me go all warm and fuzzy. Give me this little lady with a banjo any day and I'll be a happy, sincerely happy, muso. Her latest release, the gorgeous 'Elephee' EP, is astounding. This set of raw yet beautiful recordings captures Rachael at her charming best, and it's perfect Sunday afternoon listening. Five tracks of brilliant lo-fi goodness and I can say in all honesty there is nothing bad to say about the EP; hats off to the amazing Broken Sound Music, who seem to be guiding Rachael [...]

Rachael Dadd is by far one of my favourites artists to see live, and I'm surprised to see I haven't blogged about her before. I first met Rachael when we were on tour together with Alessi's Ark and Adelaide's Cape back in February, and she truly is sensational. A DIY artist in every sense of the word - from recording in a living room to hand-sewing all of her own unique merchandise - Rachael is charming, creative and one of the most distinctive artists touring the UK today. She releases new EP 'Elephee' [...]

We're fans of Rachael Dadd here on TLOBF. Her beautifully sparse and folk-tinged music has not only made me happy, but also my Dad, and you can't ask for more than that. Following up her previous EP, Moth in the Motor , Rachael has announced plans for another EP, called Elephee , and will be released on 13th September. It's a collection of stripped down classical guitar and banjo songs, released on limited edition CD, hand numbered, with every cover hand painted using linocuts designed & etched by Rachael herself (all other [...]

I'm just going to keep throwing stuff at you until I get this inbox under control. It's not for lack of trying, and it's certainly not to disparage any of the fine artists in there. I love all of these. I hope you do too, xoxo Rachel Dadd's Moth in the Motor.... I still love this song so much! And one of my favorite Glaswegian bands, Cancel The Astronauts is giving away their EP I Am The President of Your Fanclub (And Last Night I Followed You Home) [...]
Rachael Dadd's Table is the second video today that first went to our video tumblr, but then got on the main site, because it's a masterpiece and we'd be terribly sorry if it was lost in the avalanche that is the net: "Hand painted animated video for Table, from Rachael Dadd's mini-album Moth In The Motor . Created by the immensely talented hands of Betsy Dadd - oil paint on glass. Each pressing of the 103 vinyl release includes a free download of this video, and every sleeve has been hand painted." [...]

On February 15th, Rachael Dadd will be releasing a mini-album of piano songs, titled Moth on the Motor , through Broken Sound Music . Cool! Also, the physical release will be limited to 300 103 vinyls, all hand-painted by the songwriter herself. Cooler! Also, artists are being invited to send in their own sleeves, and all profits made from each sleeve will go to the artist who drew it. Coolest! Here's the first song from Moth in the Motor , "Table." Obviously it's rooted in piano, but all of the various flourishes, from [...]

Table mp3 Rachael Dadd Moth In The Motor ..... pre-order it here, from Broken Sound .... (those images above are just some of the images created for the collaborating, Moth In The Motor Arts Project . Also, the 300 limited edition 103 vinyl pressings will have a unique liner designed by Rachael Dadd herself, wow!) Rachael Dadd is my new calm-the-fuck-down music. Geeze, I feel guilty for even using the F-word in the presence of such pretty, airy, delicateness. Seven delightful, thoughtful tracks that even with her breathy, high voice, poke and [...]

I am in love with the voice and music of the UK singer/songwriter Rachael Dadd at the moment. Her latest album "After the ant fight" is highly recommended if you like beautiful folky songs a little out of the ordinary. On February 15, she will release a mini-album of piano songs, "Moth in the motor", on 103 vinyl and download. For this release, her sister Betsy Dadd ( betsydadd.blogspot.com ) has made a really nice animation of the song "Table", and if I [...]

We've seen some great nu-folk musicians pop up over the past few years - Laura Marling , Mumford & Sons , Noah And The Whale and Johnny Flynn just to name a few - but there are still some brilliant new artists appearing, and the pace at which this ever-expanding 'folk' genre is mutating and refreshing itself looks set to continue well into 2010. I'd wager that the magnificent Adelaide's Cape is going to be a 2010 poster child for this particular 'scene', 'movement' or whatever other label we're pegging [...]

It's freezing outside and (just slightly) covered in snow (about half an inch) so naturally the entire nation has ceased to function. Erm, okay, it really isn't that cold and the snow really isn't that big a deal in all honesty but of course given the worst weather conditions we usually have to deal with are constant and life-sapping drizzle it seems that it's all come as a bit of a shock to the nation as a whole. We live in a city by the sea of course, which means that we never get the sunshine which is [...]

I haven't paid much attention the actions of Ms Rachael Dadd in the last year or so. She's been gallivanting around Japan, signing to a Angel's Egg label out there and generally playing gorgeously lush folk music. Looking on Hype Machine , I realised that funfunfun is the only blog that is actually talking about Ms Dadd's music which I find a bit mystifying. When you have artists like Laura Marling, Emmy The Great etc receiving critical acclaim, you'd think the music press would be scouring the land, like a hungry vampire in need [...]
