She is the tiniest of little girls with the throatiest of deep, deep voices. Her last album, Happenstance , has accompanied me on many long drives and been spot on, time and again. This little teaser video is for her forthcoming album -- there are no songs, and not even a title, but it is an evocative enough wave from her corner of the music porch that I offer it here, along with a song from her last album. (Be Be Your Love. The first few bars of this song always gets me, in spite [...]

Fourteen bands for $15 ... how can you go wrong? If you're going to be anywhere in the area of NYC or the Catskills on Saturday, August 14th, this a great line-up for a great cause. All the money raised is going to Friends Of Snuffy , a volunteer organization aimed at improving the lives of pets and stray animals through education programs, grants and direct funding in the central park area. Founded in 2006 by animal lover and music executive Mary Gormley, Friends Of Snuffy has rebuilt the Shandaken dog shelter as [...]

There seems to be a a slight similarity between today's song and today's video. First, both are cover versions of great songs which is highly unusual, because I am not a big fan of covers unless the new version is better than the original (Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower") or unless the new version just does something entirely different (Ministry covering "Lay Lady Lay"). That's interesting how the songs I use as examples were both originally Bob Dylan songs. The other similarity between the two videos is France. Nouvelle Vague is French, and the video by the [...]

Song: Citizen Cope ~ " Back Together " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =nvsArhwfsdc I'm just looking forward to seeing Citizen Cope play at the Wiltern tomorrow. Cool lineup with Cope, Rachael Yamagata, and Alice Smith. Hopefully I will have some pictures and stuff on Monday. Video: Modest Mouse ~ " Missed the Boat " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =ogharitmxSc This is one of the coolest entries for another green screen challenge with the stop capture. I [...]

She's Like the Wind by Molly Lambert Because of my inherited ( jewish ) compulsion to talk all the time, I often end up giving out information about myself that is humorously embarrassing. This is what jews do, mock themselves before you get the chance, like hesh on sopranos , or this TV special that was just on PBS called "dogs that changed the world" about how wolves that would go near trash piles left by humans had a better chance of survival if they could [...]

"We could take a thousand walks and laugh all day." Rachael Yamagata ~ 1963 from Happenstance by Rachael Yamagata
Last November I was invited down to The Gibson Lounge to the Hotel Cafe Tour featuring Rachael Yamagata, Josua Radin , Cary Borthers, Joe Purdy , Jim Bianco , Brian Wright and a few more that I can't recall right now. I dragged a couple of my friends downtown and we had a front row seat for the show. Unfortunately, all of my pictures came out black - until I just ran them through a color corrector - it over corrected but at least you can see the photos now.. We were lucky [...]

Once upon a time I wrote plays, but then the theater died, and I stopped bothering with all that. Then in a Colorado hotel room, Kobe Bryant cheated on his wife with a groupie named Kate Faber , and our lives would never be the same . The local police brought Bryant in for an interview, and that's when the magic began. The transcript is amazing. When you're accused of such a serious crime, sometimes you forget everything. Detective Winters: Did you finish? [...]
Rainy Day Again... Don't know if I'm playing into it or against it with this. Rachael Yamagata comes out of Chicago with a fierce and raging voice and a firm hand on the piano. I've always found Tori Amos unlistenable and Fiona Apple listenable, though verging on self-parody, many of those self-absorbed and earnest qualities work for me here and I couldn't say why (though the complete lack of hype probably does help--quick show of hands--how many of you besides Liz and Meg and [...]

My grandparents met in 1925 on the first day of school. My grandma was a junior, my grandfather a sophomore. It’s one of those storybook romances that you hear about; boy meets girls, wants girl, gets girl, loses girl, and finally makes it up to her. But in talking to my grandmother and recalling the endless amount of times I have listened to her throbbing heart of a story, she never ceases to
This entry will be brief, so that my snobbery doesn't get out of control. When Zach Braff released his Garden State soundtrack, hipsters everywhere acted like it was the 1.5th coming of Christ, a true occasion. The soundtrack's alright, but come on now. A Grammy for a mix-tape? I remain highly dubious. And while I love "New Slang" by the Shins as much as the next girl, and while I've played that on my guitar and all that, here's the thing: The Shins will *not* save your life. And Zach Braff is not going to save indie music. [...]
