Holiday-themed compilations aren’t usually my thing, but add new original songs, covers, and rare recordings by the likes of Rachael Yamagata, Tegan and Sara, Regina Spektor, Everest, Devo, and the Flaming lips, not to mention a holiday track with Neil Young on vocals to the lineup, and you’ve got my attention. Later this month, Gift Wrapped II: Snowed In , a 21-track LP featuring cuts by the aforementioned names and more will hit online music outlets. The album includes originals by Spektor (“December”), Yamagata (“Baby Come Find Me At Christmas”), Devo (“Merry Something To You”), covers by [...]

The show, which will take place on Monday, Sept. 27 at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg, will honor Cho's legacy and raise money to help out his family.

Filed under: Video , Exclusive Rachel Been, Spinner.com Black Gold drummer Than Luu channels the ghosts of past musicians each time he hits that snare drum on his kit. That is because the snare drum in question dates back to the '40s, a reflection of his and Black Gold keyboardist/singer Eric Ronick's affinity for vintage gear. "It's been through a lot of stories," Luu told Spinner during the band's Interface performance in our New York [...]

A Post by Gabor Pertic Image found here Rachael Yamagata • Duet (with Ray Lamontagne) ‘Moments in the Dark’ and ‘Dark Moments’ are two different things. Moments in the dark are spent in the oddly shaped confines of a bedroom, blinds closed, in a world uninterrupted. Looking up at the ceiling, pretending to show you [...]
No one could have foreseenthe catastrophe—it rose fromthe still water and the sunblocked out by spring chapeausand parasols. They were waiting,or posing—and here and there a dogpoked at the ground, and the smoke roselazily from the boater’s pipe. Earliera mother wiped an eyelash from her daughter’s cheek, the local rowing crew powered their wayacross the water, and the town lush slid

I had almost decided not to do a decade in review list, but for some reason I felt the urge to tonight. This is not a very researched list, just done in less than half an hour based on my Rate Your Music.com account and what was rated highest for each year. Not very talkative this evening. Playing something a lot more mainstream (and yes Warner Bros. is freaking mainstream to me, I know, I am a snob), Rachael Yamagata seems just right... She takes us to a darker place on this follow up album and I like it. My grandmother has sold her condo in Florida and is moving here in the next 2 months. She is scared and angry... This breaks my heart because I wish there was some way to ease into this, but it is all happening so fast and she feels herself losing [...]
OK -- it's Sunday afternoon, it's feeling like fall and we're thinking that Rachael Yamagata 's video for "Sunday Afternoon" would be perfect company. A majestic nine-minute track that builds to a climax of heartbreaking emotional release, the song is taken from Ms. Yamagata's sorely overlooked album, the depressed-vs.-defiant Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart released a year ago almost to the day. The paraphrase Springsteen, this is the difference between something you need...and something you want. For this one, we're opting for the first. Myspace Artist Site
The classic folk songs of Greenwich Village in the 60's are reimagined by a fine collective of artists on The Village: A Celebration of the Music of Greenwich Village arriving November 3 via 429 Records. Tackling 17 songs from acoustic pioneers the likes of Bob Dylan (represented wi th six tracks), Eric Andersen, John Sebastian, Tim Buckley, Fred Neil, Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon is a who's who of adult/alt performers such as Lucinda Williams, Bruce Hornsby , Shelby Lynne and Rachael Yamagata [...]
My partner in crime from Ozborn Pix Rock discovered a new artist recently who has been around for awhile but just hasn't quite caught our attention or perhaps been seen on our normal avenues of daily music sites but deserves a good listen. He is both an author and musician and can really move the listeners with his soft and steady vocals accompanying some very strong songwriting. He plays along with an acoustical guitar, strumming and weaving tales of love, despair, and emotion. I was honored to have some correspondence with Ben this [...]

Back in March at South By Southwest , our Joshua got to sit down in a downtown Austin coffeeshop and chat up the lovely and uber-talented Anya Marina , whose become a Popwreckoning favorite since the very first listen of A Slow and Steady Seduction: Phase II (still one of our most listened to albums!). Joshua, PopWreckoning: I know you wanted a fun interview, but I have to ask you at least two musical questions. Anya Marina: No problem. OK. [...]
One of the best shows on television by far is 30 Rock . It's definitely come a long way since its awkward first season to upstage The Office on a regular basis. Last night's star-studded bit for Jack's newfound father who needs a kidney is just more proof why few shows - if any - can top 30 Rock these days. Dealbreaker. If you can't decipher all of the musicians in the clip, here is a list of everyone involved: Elvis [...]
