Rachel Sweet - B-A-B-Y ( mp3 )

Though he is a sports fan, my dad not only had grown up in a city without an NBA team, but the nearest city to us that had a franchise when I was growing up was Indianapolis. They might have played a mere ninety minutes away, but the Pacers were woeful. He also shared the opinion of college basketball coach Bob Knight that, if the only thing on television was an NBA game and two mice making love, he'd opt for the mice even if the reception was fuzzy. So, as a kid, [...]

I'll cop to it - I watch American Idol here and there. I mean, it's not like there's any aggressive counter-programming going on, and I can only watch my Kath & Kim DVDs so many times. But each time one of the female contestants gets up to screech and wail (Hey! If you get near a melody, sing it! ), I can't help but time travel in my mind back to 1981 and think that a 17-year old Rachel Sweet would absolutely demolish them all. [...]

All this talk about the mid to late seventies Cleveland scene - and the great Pere Ubu in particular - on the inspiring Siblingshot on the Bleachers blog made me think of another Ohio scene: the Akron one. Known as the rubber capital of the world, Akron was famous for its local sphere of musical activity for a short while when the mighty Stiff label released a showcase called The Akron Compilation in 1978. The album cover featured a scratch & sniff rubber tyre in the right-hand corner, and believe it or not, three [...]

Just last weekend, I was jogging around the neighbourhood and starting to feel dog-tired when my iPod shuffle happened upon Sam and Dave's Hold On, I'm Coming. My fatigue immediately evaporated and my pace quickened, as the song's nagging horn riff powered my every stride and those stealthily filthy lyrics kept my mind otherwise distracted. (How did the song sneak by censors??!!) When this classic Isaac Hayes-David Porter composition ended, so did my second wind — not surprising, as only the truly special songs can get the adrenalin flowing and make you feel transcendent, if only for a few [...]
