They'll be sodding brilliant on the main stage at ITW; before that, debut album An Awesome Wave is [...]

Rachid Taha : Rock el Casbah [ purchase ] I'm cheating a bit with this post. Looking at the title of the song, you might think the cheat is the fact that the title is not entirely in another language. In fact, I'm OK there. Rock in Arabic, when it refers to music, is rock, and Casbah is a place name that comes out the same in many languages. The cheat has to do with the informal rule we have at Star Maker, that songs must date from before 2000. There [...]

I WANNA BE YOUR COVER! ) e para as étnicas "Rock The Casbah" , do The Clash , revisitada pelo franco-argelino Rachid [...]

Algerian singer Rachid Taha seems to connect the musical dots through his love of many different styles - from Rai to rock -- and even transitions into a bit of Zydeco. His new recording, sung in both French and Arabic, is a tribute to the place he calls home, France. Today's Top Tune is the title track, " Bonjour ."

Filed under: Around the World The last time we spoke with Algerian-French superstar Rachid Taha - two years ago when he was performing in Los Angeles - he was pining for Dolly Parton . Well, at least he wanted to sing with her. Still does, he confesses now, in a phone conversation from Paris, via translation by his manager Rikki Stein in London. But he also has another infatuation with a pop icon he wants to discuss. "Johnny Rotten!" he enthuses, adding [...]

It's been a long day, starting with a 6am flight to Amsterdam, then a transfer to Paris and a tedious three-and-a-half hour train journey but State has finally arrived in Clermont-Ferrand. And as beers are sipped-upon under the cloudless sky of a balmy French summer's evening, it already feels like it's been worth the effort. All across the grassy square on the edge of town groups of people are strolling leisurely or sat on the ground, cradling drinks and talking amongst themselves. But they're not just here to enjoy the sunshine; they're here for Europavox - a weekend-long [...]
Here's hoping a certain Icelandic volcano behaves itself this week because State is set to travel to the French town of Clermont-Ferrand for the fifth edition of Europavox . The festival is based around a city centre venue called La Coopérative de Mai and augmented by Spiegel Tents in an adjoining park, while behind the scenes there are facilities for industry types from across Europe to meet and network. Its relaxed atmosphere, friendly crowds and the intimate nature of the performances made it one of our highlights of last year's festival season and 2010 is looking set to be [...]
The first acts confirmed for this year's Europavox festival have been named. Peter Doherty, Gaëtan Roussel, Arno, Rachid Taha (featuring Mick Jones) and Hocus Pocus will all be making the trip to the French town of Clermont-Ferrand in May. The full line-up will be released at the end of the month. Related Peter Doherty Galway ticket giveaway Benicassim - Day Four Peter Doherty – Grace/Wastelands Win [...]

Filed under: Around the World Baaba Maal has spent most of his life musically reaching out from his native village of Podor, Senegal, to the world. In December, he wants to bring the world to Podor. The fourth edition of his Blues on the River festival will take place, in part, in his hometown among his fellow Fulani tribespeople. "I think everyone should come!" he says. And it's not just a matter of ticket sales. He wants true participants. He wants us. He wants you! [...]

Scaricatelo, dunque. Ma scaricate l'originale. Perchè iniziative come queste vanno assolutamente appoggiate. Il video è stato girato nella stanza dell'assemblea generale dell'Onu e vede la partecipazione di 16 artisti, scelti fra quelli di paesi dove i diritti umani sono ancora una chimera. La star è Julieta Venegas , messicana [...]

I had to make one of my occasional visits to the surreal landscapes of London's Docklands this week, with its towering shards of metal and glass rising directly from pools of grey water. It felt somewhat quieter and less frantic than usual; no-one was paying any attention to the scrolling share prices wrapped around [...]

Of the many things that can be said about the performances of Dengue Fever and Rachid Taha at Central Park's SummerStage, the biggest link between the two is a good performer's ability to keep the audience entranced when they don't speak the same language. Dengue Fever are American based, but to complement the group's Cambodian pop-inspired surf-psych-rock, front-woman Chhom Nimol sings primarily in Cambodian - though they did perform "Tiger Phone Card," one of two songs in English from their newest release, Venus on Earth . Dengue Fever: "Tiger Phone Card" [...]
