Nine SoCal bands are playing Buzz Bands LA's "Dear Austin: Love, L.A." day party next Wednesday on the first day of the South by Southwest Music Festival. It seems like 999 SoCal bands are actually headed to Austin. When we started culling music from those artists, our uploader begged for for mercy. So we called upon old friend Kay Randolph (who had storage in his Soundcloud account) to assemble "LA x SXSW x 44," a mix featuring a selection of tunes that some of the participating bands have made available for download. Check out the mix below. [...]

I don't quite know how to close the book on Rademacher's "Baby Hawk" album trilogy except to say that it's as masterful as music about the music life can be. Ostensibly a body of songs that follow the career trajectory of the mythical indie band Baby Hawk, the albums bristle with morality tales, commentary that ranges from caustic to tender and anecdotes about chasing The Dream — and, subtly, how that dream morphs over time. ||| Download: "State of CA" [...]

Correatown joins Imperial Mammoth , College Kids and Will Courtney on a loaded bill for the Jan. 10 installment of Buzz Bands LA's SecondTuesday songwriter night at Lot 1 Cafe in Echo Park. Correatown mastermind Angela Correa is already starting to work on material for a follow-up to her 2011 album "Pleiades." Imperial Mammoth, the duo of Leonard Jackson and Laura Jane Scott, is coming off a year in which they released their "Where Satellites Fall" EP and landed a song on the latest "Twilight" movie soundtrack. College Kids is the project of Malcom [...]

For many, Babyhawk (Part II of III) by the Los Angeles based Rademacher, is one of the best 2011 releases. We at Insomnia Radio are one of those listeners who vote for Rademacher to be one of the best of 2011. Download Magic Words Free Music, Every Day. Subscribe to the Daily Dose. [...]

Happy Tuesday: ► Radical Face , the nom de tune of Florida's Ben Cooper, plays the Bootleg Theater behind his rapturous new album "The Family Tree: The Roots." He'll be backed by the Easterly Singers Choir, and Walking Sleep will open. [See Radical Face's "A Pound of Flesh" video .] ► The soulful Chris Pierce celebrates the release of his new album "I Can Hear You" at the Hotel Cafe. Primer: "Baby Hawk (Part I of III)" Everything about Rademacher's ambitious trilogy "Baby Hawk" seems to spell gloom. The sometimes-Fresno- and sometimes-Silver Lake-based indie rockers are taking on the trials and tribulations of being indie rockers in a three-album series (revolving around the mythical band Baby Hawk). Topics on the table: artistry, careerism, "success," integrity, deceit, hope, dreams, frustration, bitter frustration and abject despair. On Oct. 4, Rademacher releases "Baby Hawk (Part II of III)," which is less anecdotal and more conceptual than the first installment. Frontman Mike Mancillas, aka Malcolm Sosa, [...]

Three fantastic free shows, and other fabulous ones: ► The first week of this year's Also I Like to Rock at the Hammer Museum was a smash hit — and tonight's second installment of the four-week series promises to be every bit as rockin'. The Soft Pack (pictured), who are working on a follow-up to their 2010 Kemado Records debut, headline. Opening is Hanni El Khatib , who will be performing material off his forthcoming debut "Will the Guns Come Out." The free show in the museum’s courtyard kicks [...]

Any conversation with Mike Mancillas, aka Malcom Sosa, is liable to touch on the roller-coaster fortunes of his band ( Rademacher ), long commutes between their dual "homes" of Fresno and Silver Lake, post-modernism, Kurt Vonnegut, the merits of philosophizing over large cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and the seemingly utter futility of life inside indie-rock's bubble. Mancillas is tackling most of that in a trilogy of mini-albums titled "Baby Hawk" — the first, "Baby Hawk (Part I of III)," comes out July 5. And, to put it in the vernacular of the tallboy-wielding scenesters on [...]

Rademacher , with history in Fresno, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area, are releasing the first in a series of three new mini-albums. Babyhawk (Part I of II) comes out on July 5th - those interested can pre-order now via Bandcamp . Additionally, the Babyhawk Soundcloud features a deconstruction of "They Are Always Into That," where you can listen to just the individual musical elements of the song: vocals, drums, keys, and more. They Are Always Into That by Rademacher Rademacher will be playing [...]

Last year, while sorting out all things Fresno , we acknowledged rock trio the Fay Wrays , who made our ears sting, if not bleed a little. It was good pain, though, inflicted with fervor but not malice. Principals Ben McEntee and Eli Reyes, along with various contributors, are back to bruising with the new album "Strange Confessor," which, whether you merely allow for a splash of thrash or feast on a steady diet of post-punk, makes for good consumption. Reyes may be in L.A. soon drumming for Rademacher (who are working on a new album), [...]

Where to find the Wednesday warriors: ► Hard to believe it's been 10 years since Pete Yorn debuted with "Musicforthemorningafter." The 36-year-old songwriter, who bounced back last year with a sharp self-titled album produced by Frank Black, hits Wiltern Theatre tonight and will mark the anniversary of his first album by playing it in its entirety. Ben Kweller opens. ► Sweaters , Rademacher and Light FM team up for a strong local bill at the Satellite. ► Akron/Family brings its engaging weirdness to the Echo. [...]

As opposed to waking up one day and emailing out embed codes, Disgust of Us have planned a premiere party for their new video, featuring performances and an unveiling of the actual "Skin and Bones" video in a communal art space. The premiere will take place at SUB-Mission on Friday, August 13th (8:00 pm), with performances by Disgust of Us , Rademacher , and Santiago . There will be art on display, plus food and [...]

[Moment of silence this morning to mark the passing of Fear founding member Derf Scratch ...] International Pop Overthrow surges into the second week of its annual celebration of classic and power-pop — with six to eight bands per night at rotating venues, it's an impossibly unwieldy festival to get your ears around (especially with the dearth of band links on the event's 1998-style website ). But IPO still embodies the exuberant, inclusive spirit of its founder, David Bash. You [...]

[A bit of everything here: benefit shows, bands with new names and World Cup soccer:] The Airborne Toxic Event returns to the site of their very first show, the Echo, on May 25 for a charity gig for the Neda Project — an Amnesty International-related effort named for Neda Agha-Soltan , the Iranian woman who was gunned down last June during peaceful protests over the election of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadenijad. The L.A. quintet has also recorded a song, "Neda," [...]

An Oakland band known as HIJK have been playing in and around the Bay Area since their early days as Hijack the Disco. Back in 2007, HIJK released The Pen and the Letter , an album full of hyper late 90's-style rock, full of addictive hooks and complex riffs. The band is now set to release RINR♥ ( Our Eye and Our Heart ), which will be celebrated via an official release show this Thursday, March 18 at Cafe du Nord (8 pm, $10, 21+). Fellow locals [...]

Mike Mancillas is well on his way to earning an advanced degree in the Indie Rock School of Hard Knocks. Mancillas (also known by his stage moniker Malcolm Sosa) is the frontman of the band Rademacher , a steady presence on the Silver Lake scene for four years now even though they live in Fresno . Rademacher got some deserved attention for 2007's self-released "Stunts," and since then the band's uneven output has been matched by its uneven lineup, with Mancillas being the only constant. He's now working on new material — more "classic rock oriented," [...]

[Hey, the Internet tells me it's Teddy Geiger's 21st birthday today. If he's around town, I would surely buy him that first legal drink ...] A gorgeous night for music under the stars? Looks like it. The Killers play to a sold-out Hollywood Bowl, while the Greek Theatre bill has pop fans salivating — Phoenix [pictured], behind its new album "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix," headlines, with Metric popping back through town to to remind us how good "Fantasies" is and the Soft [...]
