For some, long days at the Fairgrounds and late nights at their favorite rock club for seven days over two weekends are not enough to satisfy their Jazz Fest-induced live music jones. Enter the Daze Between Festival, lodged between the first and second weekend of The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which returns to the Rusty Nail for the third straight year. This time around the event returns to it's origins as a one-day affair, but the modest courtyard stage of festivals past is being replaced by a full-scale outdoor set-up, making room for bona fide full [...]

Designer Anton Schnaider and Art Lebedev has created a radiator in the shape of a T-Rex skeleton, that he's dubbed the Thermosaurus . The concept works just like any other radiator. It's made of cast iron and though it strikes me as not practical, the team behind it says, "the item is highly efficient and energy-savvy, thanks to its complex structure that includes a skull, spine, ribs, legs, and tail bones" used as the heating mechanism. If you had the interior space and a sense of whimsy, this would be amazing. [via [...]
In September we toasted the best new bands of 2011 . Bright futures for those guys! But come this time of year it's also important to remember the musical groups who called it a day. Some of these acts were taken from us before their time, while others imploded due to overwhelming apathy. Herewith our look at all of them, good and bad and who? . Thanks again to Matt Neatock for the video production assistance. Please hold your applause until the end. Read More...

Originally published in July of 2009, we revisit the You Can't Always Get What You Want Cover Wars with recent renditions from Umphrey's McGee and the cast of Glee. You Can't Always Get What You Want is the closing track on the 1969 Rolling Stones album Let It Bleed . There are some very interesting quotes regarding the drumming on this track included in the book According to the Rolling Stones, you can see the page in question over at Google Books . [...]
Mixing '50s doo-wop vocals with modern indie rock -- and then releasing their debut album on cassette only--has certainly made Radiation City stand out in the crowd. A love for Barney's Version , OutKast, and borrowing turntables from the '40s makes us love the group even more. Portland's Radiation City has an unusual sound, to say the least. Let's see: it's kind of like the Andrews/Puppini Sisters vocal harmonies strapped to '70s rock guitar but given a modern-day indie band backing, ripe with emotion and feeling, sounding like it was homebrewed out of several eras of music but [...]
Dr. Dog, Tinariwen, and an extra special semi-Rads reunion on Friday night at Tipitina's highlights a busy week of shows in the Big Easy. Continue on below for this week's slate with a video from an artist playing each night of the week. Get out there. Monday, 11/7 Tinariwen @ House of Blues - 8 [...]
Scroll to the bottom for a photo gallery from Sunday at Voodoo 2011 My experience since being in New Orleans is that Sundays are an exceptionally treasured day in the city, and this perhaps never rings truer than during the all-too-common special weekends and particularly, during local music festivals. Sunday at Jazz Fest this year [...]

Eerie Body by Radiator Girls More Rainbows by Blackhawks Radiator Girls is actually just a guy...one guy, but he released a cassette split with Blackhawks in April from MJ MJ Records . 'Eerie Body' is by far the best Radiator Girls tune on the release and it starts out slow enough, but then kicks into a 50's surf bashing frenzy about him wanting a girl's body, but being afraid of it. The Blackhawks do a nice job of blending a psych folk-pop sound and here you'll listen to their [...]

Matt, Lizzy, Cameron, Randy, (Patty, Kevin) CMJ 2011 Tell us about the formation of the band. How has everything else fallen into place since then? Lizzy: Cameron and I started to write songs that weren't fitting with our other projects at the time. After some postponements due to family issues and starting our tape label, we decided to play out for the first time in February 2009 at Rontoms in Portland. The response was surreal. Cameron: [...]
Now that Anders has been discovered by the world at-large and Shorty is a GRAMMY winning household name, Papa Grows Funk has to be New Orleans' best kept musical secret. Friday night served as a celebration of their great new record Needle in the Groove and a headlining set at Tipitina's was an excellent platform [...]

Helping Those Who Make Us Dance: Up From The Bayou Benefit @ the Canal Room (Wed 10/5/11) "Some people have a hard time explaining rock 'n' roll. I don't think anyone can really explain rock 'n' roll. Maybe Pete Townshend, but that's okay. Rock 'n' roll is a lifestyle and a way of thinking... and it's not about money and popularity. Although, some money would be nice. But it's a voice that says, 'Here I am... and fuck you if you can't understand me.' And one of these people is gonna save the world. [...]

Portland based group 'Radiation City' released their sophomore album titled 'The Hands That Take You' on September 30 . The dream-pop/indie-pop group began as a boyfriend/girlfriend duo, which eventually grew into a quartet group. The four recently completed a five-week tour playing alongside buzz band Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. They plan to release another album this spring. Listen to the bands single 'The Color Of Industry' below. Radiation City - The Color of Industry drink the kool aid:

Seriously. No s..t. Truly. I'm listening to The Hands that Take You , which has been sitting within hearing distance for at least several weeks. And the words that come out of my mouth keep being: "This is so good!" In between exclaiming, "This is so good!" I try to define why it's so good, since people tend to want to know that sort of thing when you keep shaking them and going on about something. The best I can do is, "I've never heard anyone so creatively mesh '50s/'60s pop balladry (and the pop [...]

Portland 60's dream-pop quartet Radiation City just released their debut album The Hands That Take You, september 27th on their own cassette-only record-label Apes Tapes, partnership with Portland record label Tender Loving Empire (Typhoon, Loch Lomond). Radiation City, composed by Cameron Spies (guitar/vocals) and Lizzy Ellison (co-founder and keyboardist), is self-described as a "soothing siren-lullaby". All Music Guide describing their sound as "influences that range as far as 60's girl groups, 50's doo wop, classic indie (sweet) pop and (crunchy) rock, and 70's singer/songwriters." And Rollo & Grady featured [...]
Criminally overlooked dream-poppers Radiation City properly released their debut, The Hands That Take You , last week after previously dropping the album on cassette. The folks at Tender Loving Empire obviously weren't sleeping. They popped the cassette into their tape deck and instantly drafted up papers to sign the charming five-piece earlier this year. And now that they're gaining more traction, Radiation City are starting to get some due recognition. The latest comes via Daytrotter , who invited them to record a session that ended up going on for five tracks. It's [...]

Jeez, Daytrotter and Portland music, get a room already. The Rock Island, Ill recording crew has done little to cloak their hot and heavy courtship with our local bands, and this week that tradition continues with this neat little five song set from Radiation City . As we all know, you can't spell Radiation City without "rad" (or, for those who really love anagrams: "Citation Diary," which is the name they should use if they ever decide to become an emo band), and the up-and-coming pop band has been turning heads [...]

"Lizzy Ellison's gorgeous vocals are infectiously charming." - ELLE "Super dreamy...some of the most pleasing music of the last few decades thoughtfully time-warped into a fresh new tune." - My Old Kentucky Blog Download Singles " Park " and " The Color of Industry " Portland-based dream-pop group Radiation City have announced a second run of national tour dates in support of their recently released debut, The Hands That Take You, available now through Tender Loving Empire (Typhoon, Loch Lomond). The quartet will weave through the Midwest and return to NYC for several [...]

My iPod, which is about five or six years old with a 32 GB capacity, recently ran out of space. This became apparent when, with excitement, I went to put 99 new songs on it and it wouldn't let me. Talk about a major letdown. I still recall the ads for this now out-of-fashion model claiming it could hold up to 10,000 songs. I'm at around 5,200. So by 10,000 songs, what Apple really meant was 10,000 songs that are all three minutes long. <img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-5196" title="Radiation City" src=" http://1146miles.com/wp-conten t/uploads/2011/10/RadiationCit y-300x200.jpg" alt="Radiation City" width="300" height="200" / But [...]

Radiation City is just what the first three letters of their name spell: RAD. Where have these guys been hiding? Oh yeah, Portland! Why does Portland keep spawning such brilliance from its musical loins? Oh right, because it's also RAD. Of the Tender Loving Empire family, Radiation City is supported by an onslaught of tender loving friends – most of which were in happy attendance for this show. Their new album, called The Hands That Take You , is full of smart, dreamy pop laced with doo-wop and buh-buh-bum s. They started their set with [...]
