For as long as there have been music awards, there have been musicians with opinions about those music awards, and the Grammys are no exception. Depending on your point of view, Arcade Fire trumping commercial heavyweights Lady Gaga, Eminem and Katy Perry for Album of the Year at last year's ceremony was either the event's salvation or the moment it jumped the shark. That polarizing victory reignited a decades-old debate about the relevance and future direction of the awards show. Grammy nominees — and Grammy wannabes — have long argued over whether [...]
February is always an exciting time of year to plan ahead for music festival season and this week has been a busy one around these parts. Everyone else is getting busy, too; it looks like the Bonnaroo website was just relaunched with a new set of 2012 graphics and a promise of an artist announcement [...]

firstly, i was really surprised to see that cmj was still around, but it doesnt appear they actually are in the magazine business - the old business model. i subscribed for years from maybe like 93ish to maybe 2000? anyway, happy to see they're still around even though they've been really out of my brain since the end of my subscription. i knew they still did the cmj conference thing, but thought that may be in name only. either way.. its interesting to see who they, or the labels in this case capitol was pushing back in 03. most surprising [...]

Everyday, since the day we first moved to England, our neighbour has played 'Fake Plastic Trees' at a volume loud enough to clearly hear it in our house. Often, many times a day on repeat. Sometimes he listens to the rest of The Bends, sometimes he'll play reggae versions of Radiohead songs, but mostly he just plays 'Fake Plastic Trees'. Sometimes he'll just play it once and then not play anything else all day. And sometimes he'll even try to sing to it. I wonder if he just really, really likes that song, or if he has no other music. [...]

Kid Amnesiac Edition A while back, I did a little write-up for my version of Kid Amnesiac . For those unfamiliar, the name explains it all: Kid Amnesiac albums are combined versions of both Radiohead 's Kid A and Amnesiac . Since both LPs were products of the same recording session and were released only eight months apart from each other, Kid Amnesiac mixes serve as a way to take two great albums, trim away some of the lesser strong [...]

Neil Young's On The Beach was originally released in 1974 as the follow up to the commercially and critically successful Harvest . It was raw and loose, and from the lyrics and sparse production, it's clear that Young was in an emotionally dark place at the time. For a modern equivalent, you could compare it's emotional bleakness to Kanye West's 808 & Heartbreaks , except that where 808s was overproduced with autotune, On The Beach was underproduced (also: On The Beach is just a better record). We find Young here [...]

Honest to God, there's definitely something in the Brooklyn water. 9 times out of 10, if your press release even alludes to the word, it's worth a listen/look. After an EP last January, aptly titled The January EP , Brooklyn's Here We Go Magic have announced details of a new LP to be released via Secretly Canadian on May 8th. For an idea of this record's potential, it was produced by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich . He became smitten with the group after catching their 2010 set at Glastonbury Festival [...]
Last summer the RADIOHEAD performed a concert from the BBC in a basement and now finally both the station and the band have allowed a YouTube user to upload the entire session in high-def streaming. So whilst I'm offline watching the film 'Tyrannosaur', treat yourself to the RADIOHEAD 's entire 'From The Basement' concert in her full high glory.

Veronica Falls is a young band. There is the group taking pictures of itself! Oh you do not want to miss those first steps. All those loose meandering's on a guitar, bright harmony's recorded! The world could take notice one day, these paintings will be priceless! These infant moments of fledgling bands feel incredible to all the members involved. Pity that I am not the bass player! If I was a contributor, maybe I could share in the hidden magic! I have no such luck, it seems neither do you. Harsh words I know. I do have some very [...]

Tweet Sometimes a band has a song that's so irresistibly good that once it finishes the only thing you want to do is listen to it again. Recently, I was fortunate enough to encounter such a song, entitled "Caveman Game" .The musicians behind "Caveman Game" go by the names Chris Kerrigan, Dan Apodaca, Tim Jordan, and Kenny Tarantino. Together, they are WALK . WALK is a pop rock band from Los Angeles that has been around [...]

Scan "Self-Portrait with Sheila " by me Howdy kiddos! How the fuck are ya? Me? Well just dandy dandy, thank you for asking... Thom Yorke, frontman of Radiohead, DJing at the low end theory movement in Los Angeles back in '09. I have heard a ton of amazing things about the Low End Theory Parties/Movment and mark my words, I'll hit it eventually. Resident DJ's like Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, and D-Styles have made this party a house hold name. Well - sort of. Low End Theory was officialy founded back in 2006 that a ton of local LA hip hop and electronica DJ's began to call home. What was then a small circle of cats experimenting with music has exploded into something [...]

Gigamesh, otherwise known as Matt Masurka, is the DJ and producer that has put the Twin Cities on the map with his eclectic remixes and electro Pop. This Hype Machine star is both a low key and mainstream kind of guy. He started DJing as a hobby back in high school, but soon gave it up once he graduated. He sold his equipment to his older brother who later became known as DiscoTech. While studying music in college he dabbled in a few groups and mostly stayed away from Dance music. Later on, Masurka got drawn back into [...]

Had your fill of Radiohead remixes yet this year? Thought so. Well give it just five minutes more, because this Young Montana? rework of 'Idioteque' is actually brilliant. From 2009 but only just unearthed, it takes the deranged, skitty original (perhaps the best thing the Oxford band ever did?) and recasts it as a major key delight. Swooning melodies, a lilting bassline, and beautiful, thudding kicks combine to create something far, far too sunny for February.
