Radius (nee Ramon Norwood) is an innovative sample-based artist from Chicago, bringing "univerSoul boom bap 4th dimension sounds" from his MPC digital sampler. Radius started making beats in 2001, using the classic MPC Akai sampler he still uses today. After producing numerous tracks for local rappers he began to further his skills as a producer and arranger by competing in Chicago beat battles. Neighborhood Suicide is latest album by Radius, available courtesy of The Secret Life of Sound . audio: logan square.mp3 [...]

Chicago native Radius recently dropped his debut LP on The Secret Life Of Sound - a label you may remember from my Invisible Superstars feature a while back. The Radius LP is called Neighborhood Suicide and it's a kick in the tits for all those that think they've heard it all before where instrumental hip-hop is concerned. This one's a keeper. Neighborhood Suicide is an eleven track journey into the leftfield of the modern beat-maker's laboratory. It's a progressive sound with tight production and mean [...]

I hit you guys with Disc 1 two weeks ago, and have gotten a lot of positive feedback from heads who are in tune to the sound. I look at this compilation as kind of two sides of the same coin. Where Disc 1 was a bit more harder, mixtape-feel to it, Disc 2 has a lot of the same themes underlying: social issues, love, and a host of introspective moods, wrapped around slick production and capped off with some dope instrumentals. Ah, just read on... 01. Freddie Joachim ft. [...]
If you hadn't noticed one of the more mysterious bands just got a little more mysterious. Seattle's Molly Shannon Molly Shannon has disappeared! Their myspace deleted, their website now a strange and distorted montage of someone's old home movies, and no one knows what happened. Well almost no one, because last week, I received an e-mail from Joe Martin their trusty PR Guy. " Hi Jason, How have you been? This is Joe Martin with Molly Shannon, Molly Shannon. Recently you may have noticed that ms,ms's website and myspace page have gone blank. No [...]

1. Radius - "Logan Square" Radius (nee Ramon Norwood) is an innovative sample-based artist from Chicago, bringing "univerSoul boom bap 4th dimension sounds" from his MPC digital sampler...Neighborhood Suicide is his first official release, out now from The Secret Life of Sound. For each instrumental track there is also a story or explanation given in the liner notes as to what this part of the city means to Radius and why it is on the album. [...]

'Sup, soul kids? I've recently enjoyed several days of doing absolutely nothing meaningful or productive, unless you count shopping for a fly pair of sunglasses like the ones pictured above. However, much to my hungover dismay, the time has finally come to defy inertia and roll my unambitious ass off the comfy couch... Not surprisingly then, there's no particular theme or cohesiveness happening with today's musical selections. That sort of thing would have required forethought and organization, which are alien concepts to a brain that's recently enjoyed a brief vacation from highly evolved mental processes of [...]
Chicago's killin'em these days. I guess it's been big, but until a couple years ago did I recognize. Radius has just dropped Neighborhood Suicide , an amazing instrumental hip hop journey that flexes his sampling guru-itics as a producer from Chi-city! The new album is a reflection of the city, particularly certain neighborhoods mixed with Radius' personal emotions. The making of this album is heavy stuff. Luckily for us we on the other side with our ears wide open. Expect some breaky-ish, some experimental, lots of MPC classic history! More [...]

A few years ago, the City of Chicago put together a pretty cool mp3 project for Millennium Park. Anyone could download the thing and essentially have his/her own narrated walking tour of the park. The Windy City's own Radius (aka Ramon Norwood) arguably has done one better with his latest, Neighborhood Suicide . Radius has put together an instrumental album highlighting the city by the lake's neighborhoods. Think a hip-hop version of Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise . Radius' music is in the vein of other such luminaries as J Dilla and Madlib, creating all his [...]

Radius Logan Square (Rent's Due) Beautiful, sample-based instrumental funk that exudes the isolation of winters in the city. Raconteurs "You Don't Understand Me" I'm loving the second helping of Jack White & Co.'s analog 70's rock fog. Tally Hall "Banana Man" Sonic smartass-ery in the proud tradition of They Might Be Giants or Ween. From Bubblegum To Sky "Even The Sunbeams" Brian Wilson-ish [...]
The Secret Life of Sound label presents an instrumental sample-based album akin to the works of J Dilla and MF DOOM. Madlib. Chicago's Radius makes the kind of hip hop music beds that can stand alone. They're supposedly based on the city of Chicago, but since I'm not from there, I can't [...]

Radius " Logan Square (Rent's Due) ": Radius' debut album for TSLOS , Neighborhood Suicide , was released on May 6th. And I love it. Think DJ Shadow if he hailed from Chi-town. Raw, emotional instrumental Hip-Hop from a talented brother, documenting his feelings towards his city at the time of creation (to hear him say it, " Neighborhood Suicide started in late 2006 and early 2007, The Winter Season… I was tired of Chicago, but only because I felt I couldn't make anything workout here. I needed fresh air. [...]

I am psyched beyond psyched to see Devotchka tomorrow night! I don't know what else to say except that I plan to have the time of my life trying to get Nick Urata's attention. Oh, I kid! I'm not going to do anything untoward, that's not my style. Then again, who knows what I'll be inspired to do once he starts singing? I should at least take a red rose with me, don't you think? To hold me over until tomorrow night, here is some new music [...]

Nýjasta afurð sveitarinnar, The Exquisite Death of... , kom út sjötta þessa mánaðar og var hún tekin upp af ekki minni manni en Dave Fridmann , upptökustjóra Flaming Lips . Our last batch of Smash or Trash entries saw a significant amount of feedback from fans of the following two two artists.
