I'm going to have to make it quick this week, so I just have a trio of violent and ridiculous (in the exasperating, slightly scary sort of way) stories to share with you all. These three all popped into my blog reader over the last week or so, making for a lovely post-apocolyptic feel to the news. First, it looks like the LAPD and Hollywood Bowl have taken a lesson from past Houston concert policing and attacked some nice folks at last week's Radiohead show. All sarcasm aside, this is outrageous, assuming it's all [...]
Yesterday, a free Rage Against the Machine show outside of the Minnesota state capitol in St. Paul that was scheduled to coincide with the Republican National Convention—which is taking place in that city—was shut down by local police, who claimed that the band couldn't play because it was going to take the stage too close to the show's 7 p.m. curfew, and besides, Zack de la Rocha and his pals didn't have the proper permits to perform, even though the rest of the festival apparently went on without incident. This year's RNC, like the ones in 2000 and 2004, has [...]
True story: Last year I was flying from Chicago to Toronto, and while I was in the customs line at Pearson International Airport, I noticed Tom Morello eight or nine people in front of me in line. When he turned the corner in the line so that he was facing me, I looked him right in the eye and said, " Fuck you I won't do what you tell me ." He replied, "Who the fuck are you? Shut the fuck up." In honor of the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis this [...]

Well it's been a long weekend. After ticket troubles, traffic jams and unbelievably overloaded bags I made it to Reading, ready for three days of pure musical enjoyment. This was my second time at the festival, so I knew vaguely what to expect from it all, but the line-up was a very different prospect this year - a lot more clashes generally - so I did have to make some regrettable decisions. So I'll start from the start shall I? Friday 's always a nice day. Your limbs don't ache, your muscles [...]

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE was scheduled to make their first performance in Minnesota since their hiatus tonight at the Target Center, but they surprised demonstrators yesterday evening at the Ripple Effect non-partisan demonstration event in front of the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul with an a cappella performance that began a march towards the [...]
Yesterday's planned "secret" gig outside the Minnesota State Capitol got closed down by police - whose handling of anything that might seem like dissent outside the Republican National Convention leans towards the 'my god, these people are enemies of the State and must be subdued before they murder my family in the bed and establish some sort of worldwide caliphate, whatever that might be' heavy-handedness . The band instead embarked on a march towards the Xcel Center. It's not clear if the police who fired tear gas at the more determined members of the group were [...]
Rage Against the Machine Performs Acapella in Crowd at Free Concert on Minnesota State Capitol Lawn Photos by Justin Andert The “beyond partisan” free concert on the lawn of Minnesota’s state capitol today went from mellow and laid back to a political movement. The buzz around the crowd blew up when word got out that Rage Against the Machine would be making a surprise appearance on stage . Zack De La Rocha Makes his way through [...]
Sure, Barack Obama officially accepted his nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate this past week in front of nearly 80,000 endeavoring supports. But did his appearance incite an all out, politically charged circle pit of epic proportions? We think not. Taking the stage on Wednesday, August 27st as part of the Tent State Music Festival to End the War , just a day before Mr. Obama's speech and Radiohead's webcasting , Rage Against the Machine would lead some 8,000 attendees in a non-violent, yet chaotic expression of peace. More than [...]
We're signing off early today here at the MS Mansion. There are bowls to be smoked, beers to be drank, and barbecues to attend in the waning days of summer. Enjoy your weekend! Meanwhile, some stuff that happened here this week: We posted interviews from our trip to the Rockstar Mayhem Festival with Mastodon, Machine Head [...]
Not only were/are Rage Against the Machine fiercely political and idealistic, they're also perhaps one of the only examples of rap-metal done right. The video for "Bombtrack" from 1992's self-titled debut showcases not only the band's political bent but their heavy as fuck riffs and grooves. Come on - don't front. You love Rage Against [...]

On August 27th (Wednesday) a protest concert was staged outside the D.N.C. in support of Iraq Veterans Against the War . It started as a 2-mile march across Denver to the Pepsi Center. A mass of what was said to be between 4,500 to 6,000 people gathered outside the Pepsi Center, and refused to stand in what was designated as the protest zone, dubbed the Freedom Cage . Most of the protesters just relaxed, smoking weed and playing dice. Performers included Flobots , The Coup and Rage Against the Machine, [...]
The Battle Of Denver Our buddies BJ ( A Walking Disaster ) and Julio ( Cause=Time ) both got to see an incredible show last night. We have BJ's review of the show along with his amazing pictures of Rage Against The Machine. Thanks to him for sharing. [ A Walking Disaster ] [ Cause=Time ] What had been billed as The Battle Of Denver by the nearly 8,000 lucky fans that had been granted free access to this show by way [...]
Sure, they made some fucking awesome music (I probably spun their self-titled disc more than any other in the summer of '92). But what I want to talk about today is how, despite fame, money and age, they've remained fiercely political, involved and angry, always sticking to their ideals. The above picture [from Fear and [...]

These are some great and intense pics of the show Rage put on yesterday at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, ( beautiful photography by Tim Hussin and Noah Rabinowitz). Almost makes Denver look like a police state. Funny what peace looks like. Rage Against the Machine joined with Iraq Veterans Against the War and approximately 7000 protesters and concert goers to deliver a message to Barack Obama urging him to stick to his anti-war platform.
:: The last drummer The Replacements had, Steve Foley passed away from an "accidental overdose on prescription medication". :: Give a new Jenny Lewis track a listen here . :: Funeral For A Friend have inked a deal with Victory records. :: Foo Fighters fans caused a near riot at the Reading Festival this past weekend. :: Gym Class Heroes have posted a new track called "Catch Me If You Can" [...]
(Rage Against The Machine - "Guerilla Radio" - Live in Denver) (Rage Against The Machine - "Bombtrack" - Live in Denver) I had just finished listening to NPR's coverage (because, while CNN and Fox News are good for a larf, you have to be serious every now and again), when I was inadvertently reminded that, yes, Rage Against The Machine would rage against the Democratic National Convention in the Mile High City. And, since this is the internet, video of that performance has turned up on YouTube. God bless, ye merry internet. [...]
As phoenix like rises from the ashes go, this was one to wet most people's appetite. Zack De La Rocha, one of the preeminent and political lyricists of the 20th Century teaming up with Jon Theodore, one time stick man for The Mars Volta and whom the phrases "complex time signatures" and "hit it fucking hard" sit equally well on his resume. So two men with impressive back catalogs, but both of whom have failed ...
Lets be honest with ourselves: There will always be time and place when only Rage Against the Machine can satisfy you. That being said, it was a sad day when I heard Rage would be calling it quits. (Not to unlike my father being able to recall where he was when he heard JFK had been shot, I can vividly remember sitting in Mr. Collett's class and refusing to accept that I was being told RATM was done.) And the worst part is, we were given so many glimmers of hope in more Rage music that [...]
