Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2012 RAIN MACHINE @ ZEBULON 258 Wythe Ave Brooklyn, NY 11211 FREE, 8PM It's a surprisingly unimpressive night for shows tonight. Nothing truly stands out, but there's certainly nothing wrong with a free show at Zebulon with Rain Machine (aka Kyp Malone from TV on the Radio ). Photo credit: Benjamin Gallardo The week may not be starting off with a bang, but it certainly looks like the combo of bands hitting the city this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will make up for it. Future Islands , Gauntlet Hair , Jukebox The Ghost , Sondre Lerche , YACHT , the list goes on and on and on. Enjoy it! Devon Williams , Tony Castles , Young Buffalo @ [...]

Little Scream at MHOW in May ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) Montreal singer/songwriter Little Scream (aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer) recently finished up some North American dates with BOBBY . She won't be there when BOBBY play Mercury Lounge this Saturday (12/3) ( tickets ), but Laurel and her band have their own short run of dates which include two NYC shows this week. She plays Pianos on Tuesday (11/29) with Rain Machine (Kyp Malone) and [...]

Quiet is a relative term. Achieving a sense of low volume in a world full of constant sound depends on an equation whose variables include the objective noise output of a given environment and your subjective experience of those particular circumstances. The latter part is especially complicated to unpack. For instance, say you've always lived in the rural countryside where the noise from a speeding car passing through the night shatters what had become your blanket idea of quiet. Or rather, you're someone who grew up on a busy street in a large city. The sound of passing cars [...]

We resume our reposts of the Blogophilia series this week with volumes 8 and 8.5. Why 8 and 8.5? Well, I mixed these at the same time, and the tracks came from the same collection of songs I reviewed. Calling one 8 and the other 9 didn't feel right. We've also had a 12.5, and recently a 26.5 for the same reason. Like volume 7, these two mixes really capture the summer spirit. Volume 8.5 has a throw in from an "oldie but goodie." Enjoy... Blogophilia Volume 8 [...]
Brooklyn based experimental-rock band TV On The Radio has taken a back seat to to various side projects and extra-circular activities of some members in recent times - namely Dave Sitek ( Maximum Balloon ), Kyp Malone ( Rain Machine ) and Tunde Adebimpe ( Stabbing Eastward , Fake Male Voice ). However, in a very brief messages on the band's official site they will return this spring with their fifth studio album entitled Nine Types Of Light . The follow up to 20082s Dear Science will be released [...]

Our hearts were nearly broken when TV on the Radio announced that they would be taking a year hiatus, but we should have known that the boys couldn't completely take a break. There seems to be no shortage of Takeaway Show copy cats these days, as the internet is chocked full of sites presenting musicians playing in unique settings. Among those web-only shows that are vying for your attention is Our Show With Elliot Aronow , which recently uploaded this video of Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio/Rain Machine) covering the Talking Heads classic - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)... Although we're not ones to blow our own collective trumpet, we have to admit to feeling pretty chuffed after our special Love:Live Music show at the Mercantile on Dame Street last Friday night. With the venue packed full of State readers, writers and friends, the three bands did us proud. Take The Money & Run proved that their status as one of our Faces Of 2010 was very much deserved, while The Cast Of Cheers blew us away with a short set of pure brilliance. The fact that they've only played a handful of live dates so [...]

As one fifth of TV on the Radio , Kyp Malone is part of a fascinating sound that is gritty and adventurous with bracing guitar hooks, manic jazz/prog arrangements and spell-binding vocal playfulness. Malone's solo project, Rain Machine , is more introspective. Though not steering too far from the TVOTR wheelhouse, part of the rhythmic wall of sound has crumbled revealing raw emotion. On record, this emotion touches on anger leading to slight intimidation of a live show – fear of being scolded or lectured. The fear is rapidly dispelled. Amongst his five other band [...]
