A second track from Rain Machine , the solo project from Kyp Malone of TV On The Radio , has been free-released out into the interwebs. Smiling Black Faces is a much more soulful, yet gritty, piece than our previous listen, Give Blood , which is a more garage-fuzz rock out. Rain Machine will release on September 22nd through Anti- Records. MP3 : Rain Machine - Smiling Black Faces ( [...]

TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone gives us another look at his solo project, Rain Machine, with "Smiling Black Faces." The song is a long, folky ballad of sorts that features Malone's emotional, crying voice through mutters and complaints singing mostly inaudible lyrics. So maybe it's his 21st century Dylan song! But what's most interesting is how different the song is from Malone's first leaked track, "Give Blood." While "Smiling Black Faces" plays with emotional pauses and a slow rhythm , "Give Blood" is an almost tribally fast-paced romp that is almost claustrophobically full of sound. Does this [...]

Aproveitando a pausa do Tv on The Radio, o Guitarrista Kyp Malone gravou um álbum solo de 10 faixas que ele descreve assim: "A nearly full spectrum of frequencies audible to the human ear, a reflection of a variety of emotions and situations real and imagined - some rhythm some rhyme."

Rain Machine - Smiling black faces

Here's a new joint from the solo project of TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone. The self-titled album will be out 9/22 on Anti- . This one has a stripped down TVOTR feel to it and a slow, steady build up. Rain Machine - Smiling Black Faces Pigeons and Planes

Our first taste of Rain Machine, aka the solo project from TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone, was the chaotically upbeat " Give Blood ." It didn't leave much space for you to catch your breath, if breath needed catching. Malone wisely follows it with "Smiling Black Faces," a mellower political/personal anthem that gains momentum with each bell-like toll of his guitar (and jingle-bell shake in the background). We hear about genocide, burnt corks, slave names, an unsmiling face in a mirror. You might be reminded of TVOTR's " Dry Drunk Emperor ," but this one's set at least partially [...]

It's been quite the eventful few days for the super-group known as Them Crooked Vultures . The band, which consists of Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Foo Fighter Dave Grohl and QOTSA's Josh Homme, played surprise sets at both the Reading and Leeds festivals over the weekend, and now have announced a string of fall tour dates. Them Crooked Vultures will kick off the run with an appearance at the Austin City Limits Festival, an ACL TV show taping and a performance at Stubbs on September 30 - October 2 before heading east. It wasn't intentional... we swear! It just kind of happened that this weekend's Friday Mixtape turned out to be perhaps our best one ever. As always, we have sought to cap off your week with a stellar mix of the week’s best new singles, remixes, and covers, along with mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. However, this particular one is just a little more special... and jam-packed. Just take a look for yourself... "Retreat! Retreat!" (Live at Radio City Music Hall) by 65daysofstatic [...]
Dirty Projectors & TV on the Radio's Malone set TC dates, Manson & Snow Patrol leave Myth & TC print/site on the outs?

(photo courtesy of Jacob Bluestone ) It's been a long while since any Culture Club posts, but they might start coming faster and furious-er than before. I'm toying with the idea of making this a daily post, so we'll see how it goes. -Drake has a new track with Kanye West, Lil' Wayne and Eminem; "Forever" is slated to be featured in the upcoming LeBron James documentary More Than a Game. Here it here . My thoughts? I would have loved [...]

Frank Yang It's funny that though I offered readers an introduction to The Wooden Sky just last month , watching them play an in-store at Sonic Boom on Monday night, the eve of release for their new album If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone , it felt like I was the one being introduced to them for the first time. Previously, I'd regarded them as very good with moments of great roots-rock band - terrific at what they did but unlikely to turn anyone's world upside down. [...]

Remember those times when you picked up a music magazine or a weekly music paper and read a playlist of what that publication's writers were playing in the office that week? There was power in those playlist charts. Here is my nod to that staple. No great fanfare, just ten of the best song around right now I've been playing lots of.
