RALEIGH MONCRIEF Watered Lawn Anticon This album is hard to pin down, but I'm finally realizing a pattern here: folks like producer/collaborator Raleigh Moncrief, who might have done booming sets at Low End Theory three years ago opening for Flying Lotus, are getting way more gentle even than the smoothest sample-soul we've heard in the recent past. This album starts with a male chorus, echoed finger-snapping, and an occasional flamenco guitar strum—fuck, it could be a spaghetti western ballad (or, more likely, a Spindrift song) if it didn't also have some electronic beats [...]

As a UC Davis alumnus, I'm always proud to promote the vibrant underground music scene in Davis, CA. Run primarily by the local college radio station KDVS 90.3FM , the city lights up every week with house shows by bands playing diverse versions of strange, noisy, alt-everything. Often very few of the students present have even heard the band — but it's still worth it to go to the show, grab a 40 oz of Miller Lite and join the ear-splitting, sweaty, living room mosh pit and then waltz outside and have a [...]
![[Listen] Raleigh Moncrief: "Tokaido"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4131107_lg.jpg)

Anticon musician/producer Raleigh Moncrief unveiled a brand new track that, as his Facebook page says, he made on the bullet train in Japan. 'Tokaido' is a wicked, pulsating tune, made of narcotic electro-soul messed by rhythmic detachments, blurred slates and some dubstep hints. It's another slice of that deconstructive genius he introduced us to on last year's Watered Lawn , taken a step further. Check it out below.

Sacramento-based recording artist Raleigh Moncrief has gotten some buzz these days, for engineering and co-producing Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca and supplying backing axe for Marnie Stern - and, of course, his own playful and well-received solo efforts. The video below, directed by Miko Riverza, is "Don't Shoot", the latest from Moncrief's Watered Lawn LP released last October on Anticon. Watered Lawn is anything but watered down. The tracks are layered, lush, and expansive with folksy art-rock vocals atop a beats-and-loops-based collage of sounds, both live instrumental [...]

photo by Lin Zhipeng It's not a Monday, but Bank Holidays and Christmases being what they are, perhaps that's forgivable. Here's the last Monday Music - the one weekly blog where SOIWT drops the London-music-only rule - of 2011... Masterface - Excuse Me Girl You know that feeling when you're utterly exhausted, but so happy and without urgent needs that you don't care in the slightest? That's what this song sounds like. Giddy goodness, from Freedom [...]
I've never been a big fan of looking back, sure it's comforting to reminisce about the good old times... Hey you know everybody's talking about the "good old days" Everybody! The good old days Well, let's talk about the good old days..." - Gladys Knight But in my mind the past does more harm than good. If you think about the past so much you're going to constantly be ignoring what's happening to you right now. The past is good for one thing and one thing only - [...]

So...I suppose I'm a tad bit late to the year-end-best-of-lists party but oh well. Josh already offered up his favorite tracks in the year-end best-of playlist and, while our lists have a lot of crossover, I thought I'd offer up my favorite 50 tracks from the past year. I've struggled with the idea of trying to put a 'best-of' stamp on anything I listen to based solely on the fact that I'm not all that comfortable with the idea of ranking all the tracks I love. This is more a representation of all my favorite tracks from [...]
Having spent the last few years proving himself to be quite the jack of all trades (engineering the Dirty Projectors' art-rock masterpiece Bitte Orca , touring with guitar wunderkind Marnie Stern, etc.), Raleigh Moncrief sets out to prove he can make the music just as well on his own with his debut on Anticon Records, Watered Lawn . The result is a surprisingly fresh offering, a splendid record that's exactly as harmonically rich and pleasantly washed out as you'd expect from someone who counts Baths and Odd Nodsam among his labelmates. His expertise as a producer [...]

Mixtape: Twelve Bay Area Highlights from 2011 (Podcast #263) We might be biased, but, from this vantage point, 2011 reconfirmed that the Bay Area continues to have the most vibrant music community nationwide. The SF scene cranked out a ton of amazing albums this year, and our final podcast of 2011 highlights twelve great releases from Bay Area artists over the past twelve months. This isn't a "Best of" list per se, but these acts did create some of our favorite music in 2011. We'll be doing more year-in-review coverage over the next few [...]
