![[MPMF 2012] Dr. Ralph Stanley goes down in Cincinnati history](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4539373_lg.jpg)
Not only was the show that Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys played in Cincinnati last weekend fantastic, it was downright historic. The 85 year old Stanley and his group of singers and pickers took The Emery Theatre, MidPoint Music Festival, and Cincinnati by storm and those in attendance could feel the history that was being made. Stanley, who was once a prominent member of the Cincinnati record label King Records, was in fine form Saturday night. Flanked by his grandson and several other amazing musicians and preceded by Cincinnati City Council members, [...]

The Doctor meets the Captain: Ralph Stanley's 85 year-old voice is unmistakable; sung a capella, it's undeniable. "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do" is the catcall blues opener to Captain Beefheart's debut LP, Safe As Milk. Stanley's interpretation skews far from his typically reverent, trad-bluegrass. His wizened delivery of "Hey hey young girls/ Where you at?" throws [...]
As befitting a movie written by Nick Cave, the new Shia LaBouf vehicle Lawless boasts some pretty grim, salt-of-the-earth music. ... Read the full article at http://www.prefixmag.com/news/ listen-mark-lanegan-and-ralph- stanley-cover-the-ve/68305/

The invention of country-pop, as spearheaded by the likes of Shania Twain, has proven to be a sustainable commercial, though artistically not harmless, proposition. Bland eye-candy singers, their vocals auto-tuned, guitar strapped on and sold as country. The inarguably talented Taylor Swift reportedly asked to be marketed as a country singer not because her music has its roots embedded firmly in that genre, but because such a claim would deliver an audience. Many teenagers today may describe themselves as country fans, but they don’t mean any of the many Hanks or George Jones, but Swift and Carrie Underwood. [...]

The 12th edition of Warren Hellman's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival will take place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park from October 5 - 7. This will be the first installment of the fest since Hellman's passing. Event organizers have just announced the first batch of confirmed artists and they include Rubblebucket, Ralph Stanley, The Del McCoury Band and Jerry Douglas. Here's the full list of confirmed HSB '12 artists... Rubblebucket / Ralph Stanley / Dirty 3 / Red Baraat / The Head [...]

Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, and director John Hillcoat have a flawless track record collaborating on music for film so far, but for their latest project, Lawless , Cave and Co. may have outdone themselves. Where The Road and The Proposition leaned heavily on moody, Cave/Ellis-penned instrumentals, the music of Lawless is rife with guest performers and inspired cover song choices. With a story set during the United States' prohibition era (1919 - 1933), the soundtrack's core group of performers - Cave, Ellis, Martyn Casey, George Vjestica and David Sard - were dubbed a perfectly appropriate name: The Bootleggers. [...]

This is, at it states, a remix album. If you’re looking for soothing folk music, go listen to something else. However, if you like raves, club music, dubstep, hip hop, trance, or any other form of electronic music, check this out. Five world-renowned producers are the main draw: Skrillex, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights, Mark Ronson, and DJ Premier. Each of them have numerous collaborators: members of the Doors, Martha Reeves, The Funk Brothers, Leann Rimes, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty, Mos Def, Zigaboo Modeliste, members of the DAP Kings, Nas, and the Berklee Symphony Orchestra. Those names [...]

With Easter approaching, here's a third mix of songs that relate in some way or another to the Christian faith, following the Saved! 1 and Saved! 2 mixes. The first drew from verious ages and genres of music, the second comprised soul musicians doing God music. This lot comes from rock, folk, country and indie backgrounds. Some artists featured here are devout believers, some are sceptics, some are people one wouldn't necessarily have down as being even remotely religious (Cave, Waits). Most are original songs, a few are covers (for example, Wilco covers Woody [...]

With the recently announced full list of special releases for Record Store Day, it can be difficult for a label to separate themselves from the pack. One way to do it is is to follow Tompkins Square 's example - release some 78 r.p.m. discs! Luckily I have a record player that can play at 78 so this will not be an issue for me! San Francisco-based record label Tompkins Square announces the first in a series of releases in the 78 rpm 10" vinyl [...]

So you remember the insanely epic collaboration between Pretty Lights and LeAnn Rime and Dr. Ralph Stanley? Well the chilled out track just got blasted with a dose of bass and energy. Here's a new Electro Mix of the track, done by Pretty Lights. It still sounds very similar to the original, but a a little heavier giving it a good change of pace. The vocals and PL's style works so well on this track. Turn it up, enjoy! Pretty Lights feat. LeAnn Rimes and Dr. Ralph Stanley - Wayfaring Stranger (Pretty Lights Electro Mix) [...]

With Christmas out of the way, and the year almost over, it’s time I finally get around to compiling my Top 20 albums of the year of 2011 (in fact, there are 21 entries). Each album is represented on the mix with a song, and each entry has a link to the artist’s homepage or other outlet where the album can be ordered from. Because this list is intended not only to show off my impeccable taste, but also to showcase artists, all data files in the mix have been downscaled to 128kbps. This is not really a chart, but [...]
Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive , RPM Brian Nevins Back in October, Spinner posted all five tracks from the 'Re:Generation' DJ project , including the premiere of Pretty Lights ' rendition of country standard 'Wayfaring Stranger' featuring Leann Rimes and bluegrass staple Dr. Ralph Stanley . Now Spinner RPM is proud to be the first to bring you the video for 'Wayfaring [...]

The snow is falling at heavy pace this evening in Woodstock, New York, where Levon Helm and his band and crew are preparing for a special "Nightmare on Helm Street" Ramble at the legendary The Band drummer's home studio. Unfortunately there's no power on Plochmann Lane, but "the show must go on," so the concert will start at 8PM as scheduled. In other Midnight Ramble news, Helm will welcome guest openers Dr. Ralph Stanley (Dec. 2), Dawes (Dec. 3), Steven Bernstein's MTO plays Sly (Dec. 10) and The Mastersons (Dec. [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Movies Brian Nevins Well, it looks like we spoke too soon . After we heard two 'Re:Generation' tracks from Skrillex and DJ Premier earlier today, we were given the opportunity to bring you the first listen of Pretty Lights ' version of country classic 'Wayfaring Stranger' that features Leann Rimes and bluegrass legend Dr. Ralph Stanley . [...]
The forthcoming documentary, RE:GENERATION, which pairs five DJ's/producers with five different genres will be something that will have music fans debating one another for a while. Can artists like Skrillex and The Crystal Method use their skills to further a genre like rock or hip-hop and take it's sound to another level? Or will it just sound garbled and messy? This week, I'll be heading to the RE:GENERATION press conference, presented by Hyundai Veloster and the Re:Mix lab event in New York City, to get that answer. Up top, you can get [...]
Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive , RPM , Movies , New Music Brian Nevins For the new documentary 'Re:Generation,' electronic stalwarts Crystal Method and world-renowned DJ Pretty Lights were given the challenge of creating songs with musicians in unfamiliar genres: R&B and country, respectively. As you can see in the below videos, which are exclusively premiering here, both acts found themselves a bit out of [...]
"I like to say this is the first new Doors track of the 21st century." - Ray Manzarek. I beg your pardon? Listen, I know that artists these days are trying to do whatever it takes to keep their music fresh for younger listeners even if that means completely changing their sound. Also, Ray Manzarek is a bit of a crazy bastard. But the statement made by the former Doors keyboardist to Rolling Stone regarding a forthcoming song done with dubstep producer Skrillex will definitely have people scratching [...]

Skrillex is a dubstep producer, often called the Justin Bieber of his genre (in that he's hugely popular and has the body of a 17-year-old boy). The Doors are a legendary rock group from the '60s that made rock music dark and sexy. These two acts have absolutely no reason to ever be mentioned together in the same sentence, yet alone collaborate on music. But that's just what director Amir Bar Lev ( The Pat Tillman Story , My Child Can Paint That ) did for his new film, RE:GENERATION . The film features [...]

Norah Jones' last side project (providing vocals for Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi's Rome ) may have had more star power, but her next outing has just as much retro flair. In January 2012, EMI's Milking Bill Records will release Jones' country-tinged band The Little Willies ' effort of covers, entitled For The Good Times . The 12-track effort features covers from a variety of down-home legends, including Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and many more. The LP is the band's follow-up to 20062s self-titled debut, which featured [...]
