You’ve heard Night Beds’ “Ramona” before, on Whiskeytown’s Pneumonia . Not literally, in case you were going to check the tracklisting, but in essence; it’s “Under Your Breath” mixed up with “Jacksonville Skyline”, isn’t it? And aren’t we all, to be honest, a little tired of the soul-laid-bare lead singer? It’s understood, at this point, that the pointed ache he’s feeling is the product of life itself, of living it, and being able to share it with an individual other than himself. It’s not peculiarly tragic or particularly special. And yet, you haven’t heard Night Beds’ “Ramona.” [...]
I toss around the words “haunting,” vulnerable,” and “raw” often when reflecting on music, probably too often. I think this ends up being the case because I choose to write about music that strikes me, that I’m passionate about, and these are the qualities that at the end of the day I'm most drawn to. It should come as no surprise then that these are the exact adjectives that I am overwhelmed with as I have been listening to Night Bed’s recent debut Country Sleep . Winston Yellen’s voice is as rough and ornately [...]

Winston Yellen is a man who doesn't think much of his work - he's a guy who wanted to make some music, and so he did. He says he loves writing, that some of it comes easy and some of it takes months. And at the end it is all amazing. Sometimes I think I've heard the best record already, best being subjective to the degree of the albums I will always hold the opinion of being the best. Winston has reminded me that this is completely false, and exploration is still alive. I find this album to [...]

Interview by Tom Johnson There's a big difference between being a recording artist and being a 'voice'. 23 year-old Winston Yellen is a voice. I don't just mean he has a great voice, I mean there is something markedly unique about the music he's putting out. His debut LP is released on UK shores this February - via the ever-brilliant Dead Oceans label and as far as first-time efforts are concerned, it's pretty astonishing. First single Even If We Try has us mesmerised from the very first listen; almost gospel [...]
Winston Yellen is the creative mastermind behind -- or is that under -- Night Beds , a loose Nashville-based collective that specializes in impressionistic and folk-centric alt-pop that, as the name would suggest, has a dreamily surreal quality. Night Beds conjures up songs blessed with the magical and mystical, Yellen's voice a wonder of tender tenor-to-falsetto choir boy out amongst the wide open stretches of spacious Americana, a chameleon-like performer who taps into the ethereal netherworlds of Jeff Buckley and Gram Parsons while forging his own distinctive sound. February 5 debut full-length Country [...]

In February, Night Beds - the working name of 23-year-old Colorado Springs native Winston Yellen - releases his debut album. And it's DOPE. Sounding like a young, confident Ryan Adams, it is a record chock full of emotive alt-country, gorgeous harmonies and delicate guitar work. Having already released the mesmeric 'Even If We Try, now comes 'Ramona', a driving, helter-skelter dash of slide gutair and thumping drums. Listen to 'Ramona' below.
SPIN premiered a new song from the upcoming Night Beds record Country Sleep earlier today, dubbing the Americana-pop track a "moonlit charmer." "Ramona" is a brooding, melodic plea from front-man Winston Yellen, a Colorado native who rented out a home that once belonged to June Carter and Johnny Cash after moving to Nashville. Night Beds ... We’re starting to learn Night Beds has a taste for the heartbroken and on new track “Ramona”, we get introduced to a damaged soul looking for revitalization in the universe. A little more uptempo than previous ballad “Even If We Try” , this still manages to crush the soul, even if told in a more light-hearted folk-pop manner. The Nashville artist’s debut Country Sleep will be out February 5th on Dead Oceans.
Big stuff from Night Beds today. They've released the first official single from their upcoming record, Country Sleeps. You can listen to it above and buy it on iTunes as of now. The buzz about the album is that it's absolutely incredible, and "Ramona" certainly makes a testament to that. They've also started pre-orders for the album coming on February 5, along with a physical copy you get an download of the album - immediately. Indulging my inclination to instant gratification was like a bullet to my wallet, but they've got it now. You can pre-order your's - [...]
I dunno, if your definition of Christmas doesn't include feminist Ramones tribute bands singing about about muscle cars, heartache and bloody revenge, I just don't know if it's something I can get behind. Jingle all the way, people. The Ramonas - Santa's Got A GTO (alternate download)

The third part of my review of my tips for 2011, parts one and two can be found with a click on their respective numbers. 11. Memoryhouse Toronto duo Memoryhouse sent aural bliss through the blogging world through 2010 with a series of outstanding tracks that were dreamy, soothing and beautiful, in March it was announced that Sub Pop had signed the duo (at the same time that they snapped up fellow tips for '11 Still Corners) with a [...]

Ramona - Steve McQueen by morrisday [...]

Jason Grier has allowed things to get all remixy on his track ‘Heart Shaped Rock’. The original song – which is a duet with Ramona Gonzalez, aka Nite Jewel – is taken from his EP ‘Heart Shaped’. But this Papercutz remix will be included on a special edition of the EP, which will be available in October.

New York New York big city of dreams...many songs have been inspired from this great city. This forthcoming single from emerging Brighton-based band Ramona titled "New York City" which will be released on August 1 is another great one. Check out the Linus Remix and the original below.

If you missed Part One it's here. This is the second part of bands that I think are well worth your time seeing at The Great Escape 2011, after the last part being non US acts, these are all UK based, Rule Britannia and all that (or am I a bit late for the flag waving now 'The Wedding' is over?!) ... Can we have weather like in the picture please, running between venues in the rain isn't that much fun. In alphabetical order: Alpines [...]
