Lookout! Records , the Berkeley, California-based record label and one-time home of Green Day, Operation Ivy, Rancid, The Donnas, Alkaline Trio, and countless others, is no more, according to the label's former signee Ted Leo. In a message posted on his website , Leo revealed that while the label had ceased putting out new material in 2006, it was still printing back catalogs until December. Now, however, the label has "sadly, shuttered its windows for good," explained Leo. Leo, who released four Ted Leo and the Pharmacists records through Lookout! during the early 2000s, went on to [...]
This week, the 2012 music festival season officially kicked off with Coachella making their lineup announcement. This, of course, was followed by your Facebook newsfeed being bombarded with comments about people who are "so going this time" and the other people saying "I've already been there, and the lineup was better in (fill in year)". Whether you decide to go or not is of no interest to us, but being in the amateur music promotion industry, we figure we would provide you with some reasons to get excited about this annual Palm Springs party. 10. Every now and then I like to dig into the library and pull out some reggae essentials. Today's unforgettable track dates back to 1998 when Rancid punkers Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen enlisted some reggae special forces to join them on a new album to be recorded in Jamaica. The album Life Won't Wait crossed some serious punk boundaries adopting new sounds from reggae, dub, and funk. The track I'm bringing you today is the title track Life Won't Wait and it features reggae superstar Buju Banton and [...]

La band guidata da Tim Amstrong e Lars Frederiksen avrà modo di presentare per la prima volta al pubblico italiano i brani del nuovo album, la cui uscita è prevista proprio [...]

Artwork by Jacob Youngblood Ziegler Brandon's TBE Digest is a place where I gather up all the recent jams that are worth a listen (or 10) but don't necessarily need their own post. Here you will find new tracks by known bands, remixes, covers, and even mashups if they are interesting. My favorites of the lot are in bold . This may be the last Digest I do like this. I'd really like to take the time to give the best of these tracks the solo post they deserve. If [...]

Listen to Jimmy Cliff cover Rancid's 'Ruby Soho' on his new EP.
Bob Marley will forever remain the ubiquitous face of reggae, but Jimmy Cliff came before to inspire generations of musicians and introduce the world to the genre he and fellow Jamaicans called simply "makin' music." On his latest release, Sacred Fire , Cliff turns around to give a reverent nod to songs he originally influenced - looping the sequence of influence full circle. He also covers some early Bob Dylan and unveils a new song of his own. Produced by Rancid's Tim Armstrong and recorded on vintage equipment, the five-song EP is a buildup to a full-length [...]
If you were a high school punk at any point in the 1990s, Rancid's " Ruby Soho " is a song that's running through your veins at all times. Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong recently produced Sacred Fire , a new EP from a fellow legend, reggae innovator Jimmy Cliff. And the EP features Cliff singing "Ruby Soho" in that perfect honeyed falsetto, with music behind him recorded to sound like the soulful early-'70s reggae that Cliff helped to make famous. Grab Cliff's version below. Also below, check out two videos of Cliff singing with the Roots on [...]

Tim Armstrong is a punk through and through. The former guitarist for the seminal Operation Ivy is now the frontman for Rancid, the man behind the supergroup the Transplants, and the head of Hellcat Records (label home of Tiger Army and the HorrorPops). It is almost impossible to talk about punk music in the last 25 years without mentioning the undeniable influence he's had on the culture as a whole. Armstrong also just so happens to be a really big fan of musical theater. Kicking off last month, Armstrong and longtime [...]

Hey, sorry for the disappearing act over the past few days. I was celebrating my birthday a little too hard and I fell off my bike on Saturday night. It was a stupid move so I guess what I was most thankful for this past weekend was that I didn't get seriously injured...just a concussion, gashed up forehead, broken nose and a lot of road rash. Here is my short playlist to describe my experience and how I am feeling these days. 1. Black Whales - Rattle Your Bones [...]

When he's not busy with his band Rancid and producing records with Jimmy Cliff , Tim Armstrong's working on a musical theater themed web series. No, we're not joking.
