Due to a massive lack of planning on my part, there?s no actual album to download this week. However, thanks to the fact that most of the bands and record labels that I like being clued in to this whole ?free music? thing, we have an alternative. That alternative is ...

Cause you know, big heads and soft bodies make for lousy… (photo cred: greendrz ) Being 20-something in American society these days is like entering a war zone. The list of opportunities that are being rewarded in our economy is narrowing, and the dichotomy between rich and poor is perpetually widening. For those of us pursuing careers in vocational-intensive professions, we have to face workdays becoming longer, credentials becoming more rigid, competition becoming more fierce. We are the crash-test babies of an increasingly structuralized state of capitalism. Ultimately, I believe the system is fair [...]

(AFI @ Berkeley Square in 1996; photo by Chris Bellew ) Growing up in the SF/Berkeley punk scene, I always heard about the mystique of '77 and the year punk rock was born. I wasn't around for the birth of punk, but I was around for the mid '90s punk revival. And as time has passed, I've grown to think of '94 in the way I used to hear about '77. What I loved about punk rock was that every band played with a sense of purpose. Every show at Gilman Street/Berkeley Square - [...]

Big Ben love s the Badgers. Actually, he probably doesn't. He's probably a Hoosiers fan because...he was born in Ohio, which is close to Indiana...oh hell, I don't know what he was doing there. Watching the game maybe? Talkin' up Indiana Hoosiers basketball coach Kelvin Sampson? Regardless, a couple of photos of Ben are Yahoo Sports' only photos on the recap page of the Wisconsin-Indiana game, because the fact that Ben was there was way more interesting than anything that [...]
After waiting ten years to see Rancid play a club show, I finally got to see it last night. There was wheeling and dealing and calling in favors to get to go, to say nothing of sitting in the heat for an hour with a bunch of obnoxious fucks… and ...

What could be a better tribute to the Fourth Of July then some Ramones covers. Today was a good day, Shuttle Discovery took off successfully (and the launch was a beautiful view here in Florida) and the fireworks were awesome. The whole neighborhood is crackling with fireworks as I type this, a truly nice sound that comes once a year. Happy B'Day to the U.S.A.! What can I say about the Ramones that hasn't been said before. True punk rock n' roll legends and one of my all time favorite bands. Joey Ramone is up in the Big [...]
