This isn't a list of my favorite tunes, though some most certainly are. I don't listen to these songs every day, and in fact, if my iPod were to land on a few of them, I might actually press skip. But at one point, they were all songs to learn and sing for the simple fact that they spoke to me for some particular reason. So while they might not add up to the soundtrack of my current life, they're a partial document of my past, which is just as pivotal as my present and my future to who I [...]

One of the side benefits of Quentin Tarentino's movies is that his soundtracks are also almost invariably awesome. He's got a decided soul / funk / hip-hop bent, and it works. I credit him for introducing me to The Firm, Joe Tex, and Bloodstone, among others. But I'm probably most grateful for getting turned on to "Cat People" - a true Bowie gem. Here are my favorites: Foxy Brown - Letter To The Firm Joe Tex - The Love You Save The Coasters - Down In Mexico Nancy [...]

In case your iTunes doesn't already have its fair share, here's another God damn 1517 remix; correction edit, but this one's tops so it's worth the 16 MB. Ironically, Tanzlife , the editor in question, happened to do a remix of James Blake's Limit To Your Love earlier in the year, it's nice but we'll leave it in order to avoid becoming a songs we hate forum or just a really bad cliche. Thankfully though, Poland based Tanzlife has a plethora of great material of his own [...]

I was going to post another mix today, but when one of your favourite songwriters dies, priorities take over. And much as I love Jerry Leiber's repository of great lyrics – he was he Cole Porter of rock & roll – my tribute is for Nickolas Ashford, who with his wife Valerie Simpson wrote, produced and recorded over their career of five decades some of the finest soul music. They deserve a lifetime achievement award alone for that string of wonderful songs they wrote and produced for Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, [...]

"On the 8th August 2011, one of the true legends of soul, Randy Crawford, will release a new album of her greatest hits across an astonishing three decade career. The album will feature Crawford's biggest tracks including the hit single 'Street Life' and 'One Day I'll Fly away' which reached number 2 in the UK charts". "Featuring 17 tracks, the collection spans the early hits including 'Rainy Night In Georgia' in 1981, her moving live version of 'Imagine' by John Lennon and her haunting ballad 'Almaz' which became a big UK hit, reaching No.4 [...]

Randy Crawford : Knockin' on Heaven's Door [ purchase ] I've had an utterly craptastic day and need some music to cheer me up. My usual choices under the circumstances are J-rock or jazz. Since J-rockers don't seem to use the fade-out, you lucky folks get a jazz post. This is the stellar R&B vocalist Randy Crawford, with David Sanborn on sax and Eric Clapton on guitar. The song, of course, is a Bob Dylan cover and fits my mood a bit. Now if you'll excuse me, the pain [...]

Encontro-me ainda ressacado de tanto jazz de qualidade. Overdosed on jazz . Desde o fecho da segunda edição deste Festival, tenho estado a viajar pela minha memória, revisitando as actuações, relembrando as músicas, tentando reviver as emoções. Qual delas a mais marcante? Qual o momento mais delicioso nestes três dias inesquecíveis? Abaixo está a minha eleição dos melhores momentos do Luanda International Jazz Festival. I'm still hungover from so much quality jazz. [...]

One of the curiosities of Luanda's recent Jazz Festival was that the slot following Waldemar Bastos' performance on Sunday suffered not one but two alterations. At first the organizers had counted on Diane Reeves, but she had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict. The next option was Lizz Wright, but she too had to cancel at the last minute due to exhaustion. Thankfully Randy Crawford and Joe Sample were readily available to make the long trip from LA to Luanda and perform at the Festival. But that was after I had fallen in love with Lizz Wright's voice. I'd [...]

If I had any concerns that I might not be able to cover the 1980s with great soul music, then I was entirely mistaken. This series will go up to 1988-89 (at which point I'll consider whether 1990-91 is worth covering). The 1982/83 season saw the continued rise of the Quiet Storm, corporate smooth soul stuff which would eventually choker the genre. There isn't much of that on this collection (and where there is, such as Beau Williams' Elvina, it's great). Opening track Time Is appeared on veteran [...]

I think I have hit a record. This is my 14th hour at the computer and I believe my eyes are turning not only square but a demonic shade of red. To say I am short on wit and intellect at this point is putting it mildly. That said, this is a straight up jam. I love this song and I have to dedicate this one Black Shag as this happens to be the very first LP he "owned", having lifted it from his dad. I should have relinquished this posting right to him, but I am a [...]
It goes without saying that it is never easy to lose someone that you have known for most of your life. It is harder still to lose the majority of those people. It is not supposed to be this way.... Music, Sex, Boys, and Anal Toys!
. I'm not sure whether it is due to popular demand after last week's compilation, but here is a second '8s soul mix, with a third and final installment in the works. The first mix was an attempt to create a fairly representative cross-section of the genre. This mix is less self-conscious about that. What we have here, then, are some of my favourite soul tracks from that comparatively barren
. Here's the final Any Major Funk mix, covering the years 1977-84. I'm aware that the first two installments are currently inaccessible due download limits having been reached on the DivShare account on which they are stored. The limit will be reset on October 11. I don't have the collated files on my system any longer, so please try again then. As for this mix, a few standards and a few lesser
Welcome to my late-night/early-morning post inspired by the purchases I made earlier today (technically yesterday) for $1 or less at the used record store: Paul Young "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (Joy Division cover) I feel over the years I've divulged a lot of personal information about my past with music of a somewhat embarrassing nature. I believe what I'm about to admit far surpasses all previous embarrassment. You ready? Okay, here goes: This is the first version of this song that I ever heard. Oh, god. And I [...]
