February is always an exciting time of year to plan ahead for music festival season and this week has been a busy one around these parts. Everyone else is getting busy, too; it looks like the Bonnaroo website was just relaunched with a new set of 2012 graphics and a promise of an artist announcement [...]

It's safe to say that without the tireless efforts of Alan Lomax , the world may never have been introduced to the likes of Woody Guthrie, Muddy Waters, Leadbelly or countless other musicians the folklorist and ethnomusicologist recorded on dusty back roads, barns or just about anywhere else he could set up his recording gear. Lomax spent his entire career making field recordings of folk and traditional music, both in the U.S. and abroad, amassing a collection of 5,000 hours of sound recordings, 400,000 feet of film, 3,000 videotapes, 5,000 photographs and piles of manuscripts. Some 17,000 tracks from [...]
Twenty-three track radio session Randy Newman cut while in New York City in August of 1971 for WPLJ FM. Stripped down, solo piano. The session serves to both highlight material culled from Newman's first two albums (19682s s/t and 19702s 12 Songs) as well as to showcase tracks from his next full-length, 19722s Sail Away. [...]

There isn't much I remember specifically about the late summer and autumn of 1980. We holidayed in Czechoslovakia and Austria, I despised school, my granny died, and I read English football magazines to brush up on my English skills. But I recall the vibe of that time, and these songs help conjure it. * * * Kelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love.mp3 Here's a great bit of trivia: Feels Like I'm In Love was written by [...]

To all you wonderful people out on the interwebs, There's no doubt about it. 2011 was one hell of a year. We hope you have a great holiday season and get to spend some well-deserved time with friends and families. We're going to try and sign off Cold Splinters for a little while (though who knows how that will actually play out), so we'll see you back here when the clock strikes 2012... Thanks for everything, JNT MP3: Randy Newman - I'll Be Home (Live)

Some time ago a friend, who is now well on the way to owning his own island (or perhaps a gellato shop in Costa Rica), summed up his previous life as a slave to the corporate world with one single word. "Demeaning." I suppose that, with so many people not having a gig since the grown-ups crashed the economy in a quest for each and every last dollar, it could be considered poor form to admit that I agreed with his assessment. (of course, it is disconcerting to know that, if you do [...]
Mr. Randy Newman, who turns 68 years old today, turned in one of the best and our most most favorite sets of this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival. In a festival littered with Kanye Wes... Continue reading "Old Man: A Happy Birthday Randy Newman Playlist " >

Unlike some musicblogs I don't think the Strokes saved Rock & Roll, nor do I think that everything older than 30 years can safely be dismissed or ignored. On the contrary! In amidst all the rock and hip hop and what not else that gets posted on this blog, sometimes it is imperative to have a little resting moment. Randy Newman is one of my favourite chill-out places. Today's Live Performance comes from Randy Newman, together with The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Roelof van Driesten. It's a magnificent live show, 1 hour and 13 [...]

Harry Nilsson stubbornly made music that he was interested in, not necessarily music that would sell albums. Although his two biggest songs were covers, his catalog contained dozens of more obscure cover songs. We'll go beyond 'Without You' and 'Everybody's Talkin' to present some Nilsson covers you may have missed.

And cue the collective sigh of relief (or remorse, depending): festival season is over. Basically. With the triumphant conclusion of Arcade Fire on Friday night, the 2011 installments of the "Big Four" are officially kaput. There are a few minor festivals here and there left for fall and winter to tide us over until next April in Indio, but by and large we've seen what 2011 had to offer. We don't want to get too sentimental or take the spotlight away from Austin City Limits , but it was a hell of a year, folks. From Dave Grohl and [...]

Alas, Austin City Limits weekend is upon us. As is generally the case with these monster fests, the amount of talent we'll be seeing in Zilker Park is hard to fathom and my currently aggressive plan of attack will undoubtedly vary greatly from what actually occurs over the next four days. Deviations will occur – late-afternoon fatigue sets in, the inconvenience of meal breaks invokes a necessary break in the action (Taco City Limits – does that exist? If not, it should), a walk to one show is interrupted by a detour to another where "______ is supposedly coming out [...]
It's almost time to pack it up — ACL is now a mere two days away. With Gary Clark Jr.'s amazing show last night at House of Blues and tomorrow night's FUTUREBIRDS/J. Roddy Walston and the Business bill at One Eyed Jack's, the mini-ACL that goes on here in New Orleans every year on ACL week has already begun (also, ACL performers Pretty Lights and Chromeo will be in town this weekend). Although we've featured mostly lesser-known artists for Days One and Two on here, for Sunday, it feels necessary to endorse the rare American festival sets of Manu Chao [...]
We take a look at several up-and-coming acts from this year's Outside Lands that may have been overshadowed by headliners like Arcade Fire and Phish. Their reputations for infectious and enthusiastic live performances is what earned them their time on stage, and also the reason for their surges in exposure after the festival ended less than two weeks ago. Look inside for audio clips.
