" Kensington Blues is the follow-up to Raag Manifestos , which consisted almost entirely of breathless modal improvisations, recorded with a mixture of live ambiances. There's a more consistent studio sound here, but the material is more varied, with the album as a whole providing a neat summation of Rose's steel-string talents. The title track is a bright and optimistic opener, which could pass for something from one of John Fahey's early Takoma albums. Rose has admitted having had to work hard to transcend that influence on his playing, and has joked that contemporary finger-pickers like himself are [...]

"Freshly excavated from the depths of obscurity this is the one and only album from singer-song writing duo Sonny Hahn and Doug Miller and itís somewhat of an undiscovered gem as well. Originally released in 1971 on the Jubilee Group's "Euphoria" label (EST1) this quirky album mixes some fine eccentric British style psych with some outstanding heavy fuzz, particularly on the great "Hey Sun". The thoughtful lyrics deal with serious concerns (Vietnam, drugs etc..) and the guitar work is exemplory. Filled with dreamy and melodic harmonies and wistful vocals this little slice of pysch should remain unheard no longer. A [...]

"This hour-long CD is one of the best bodies of British psychedelia ever released. It contains the complete Mighty Baby album from Head Records, expanded to 13 tracks with the addition of five tracks cut by the Action during its 1967 transition period. The opening number, "Egyptian Tomb," sets the tone for the entire album ó in terms of content, structure, and beat, it sounds like the early Allman Brothers, or maybe the Grateful Dead in one of their harder-rocking moments, jamming with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on an impromptu version of CSN's "Pre-Road Downs." The beauty [...]

They're named after a track on a Guru Guru album. You're going to love them. Also, they have have released albums on aRCHIVE, Last Visible Dog, Beta-lactam Ring, and Important Records, and recently released a collaborative album with Bardo Pond, fittingly titled "LSD Pond". LSD March was formed in 1996 by Shinsuke Michishita, Makoto Inoue and Kohei Michishita. They were mostly a live band, and performed mostly in Western Japan. Before the release of their first album, Kohei left the band, and some guy named Bill joined the group. The first proper LSD March album was released in [...]

Photo Credit: Cluas Today's "Treasure From The Collector's Slum" is a very personal and very exciting download, which has been made available courtesy of Ian. You see, back in the year 2001, one week after my graduation from High School, Ian, our friend Bret and I decided we were going to see Grandaddy and Coldplay (don't say anything! Don't say anything!) at Radio City Music Hall. I had been trying my hand at recording live shows for a year or so, and I decided I would try my best to record both bands [...]

I discovered Jazzfinger when I started reading the Aquarius Records new arrivals lists a few years ago, and have tried to find as many of their releases as possible. Much like Machinefabriek or Jasper TX or many of those underground ambient-noise-drone bands, their output is very consistent. They release maybe five-to-ten records a year in a good year. "What separates Jazzfinger from their peers is the way they combine multiple strands of underground music where other bands base their entire CD-R careers on one idea. Even if "View from Sea to Land" was just shopping-cart-full-of-cans percussion and shortwave [...]

"One of the most sought after singles ever issued by The Gerogerigegege, this one is definitely worth tracking down. I think 3000 copies were pressed and there is also supposed to be a CD version [which is what is offered here for download] that has extra tracks on it, although information on it is virtually non-existent. This is THE MOST accessible release that Juntaro ever put out, EASILY. The first side has two songs, a rocking metal/punk song called "Water Business", with incredibly clean production and Juntaro screaming the title over and over again. It's short but it's incredibly awesome. [...]

A while ago, I impulsively picked up this comp at the Wicker Park area Reckless Records. When I approached the counter, the clerk, temporarily abandoning the general affected demeanor of a record store employee, exclaimed "man, I was wondering when someone was finally going to pick that up!" So I figured I gripped something pretty rad that day. Trap Door: An International Psychedelic Mystery Mix was compiled by San Francisco-based Dis-Joint Records , a label interested in all the weird freaky-deeky obscure shit that tingles my solar plexus. It's a mixtape, in some ways, [...]

The first time I saw Chris Corsano play drums, I quickly realized I would never see another percussionist that was so amazing, maybe ever ! Zach Hill, Jim White, Jerry Fuchs, Chris Brokaw, Britt Walford...while their techniques may be flawless, their creativity (even White's) does not compare to Corsano's. The second time I saw Corsano, he was on stage with Paul Flaherty at the now-(sadly)-closed Tonic. Holy fuck was that incredible. If you want a very small glimpse at what kinds of weird shit he does, check out his profile in VICE . If you need to see [...]

"We haven't been this excited about a rediscovered psych-folk classic since Red Hash by Gary Higgins. Nobody knew what to expect from the cover photo of Rodier, (looking a lot like Geddy Lee) staring out at us from a hazy meadow with the strange enigmatic title: Upon Velveatur . It is a dreamy French-Canadian psych-folk pop suite that varies from hushed mystical songs lushly orchestrated with strings and theremin to more rock-oriented numbers featuring stinging electric guitar. Lazy comparisons to Nick Drake are inevitable, and if we must go there, Upon Velveatur is closest to Bryter [...]

Since setting short or long term goals for yourself tends to keep you focused and away from the dangers of drugs, so as such, it is my short term goal to write a few entries this week digging through my archives. My archives are kept in a fortress outside the city proper and mote-protected. However, I will share certain gems from these archives on my blog, because sharing is caring. Here's one from classic UK dream pop outfit Chapterhouse . So, Chapterhouse's 1991 release Whirlpool never made a huge, umm, splash in the shoegazing scene, [...]

"Multi-instrumentalist and composer Steve Parry has produced a work of haunting beauty and timeless depth in The Singers…his ethereal piano chimes and drone-like resonance pervade this album. In a slowly unfolding landscape that seems to defy time, these pieces feel less composed than discovered: lingering like mists swirling and eddying in frost hollows. The listener almost comes upon them by accident. They are delicate yet surprisingly robust pieces of music that both unnerve and settle with equal measure. There is something austere about Parry's modus operandi that makes every note and their place in the ensuing soundscape feel significant but [...]

C'mon. Surely you know about The Crust Brothers, right? A band formed by Stephen Malkmus and members of Silkworm (Michael Dahlquist, Tim Midgett, and Andy Cohen)? They played a bunch of shows in the Pacific Northwest and someone recorded one and made it into an album called Marquee Mark ? It was a benefit show for the Washington Wilderness Coalition. The band stuck exclusively to covers (Malkmus sang lead on Silkworm's "Never met a man I didn't like"), refusing to play any Pavement songs -- notably the requested "Summer Babe." Of the 12 covers on Marquee Mark , [...]

"Osaka-based artist Takushi "Maso" Yamazaki has taken quite a turn these past couple of years. His more well-known alter-ego Masonna is best known for ear shredding cut'n'paste sonic assaults. Masonna's live performances consisted of Yamazaki screaming into two or three microphones, hurling himself onto effects boxes and destroying just about anything in his way. Yamazaki's interest in analogue electronics and modular synthesis was evident on his collaboration with Fusao Toda (of Angel 'In Heavy Syrup) -- Christine 23 Onna's "Shiny Crystal Planet" -- a hyper blend of '60s exotic breaks flooded with psychedelic synthesizers and tons of echo. As Space [...]
